This set of reels was introduced to students by CIM instructor Seán Gavin. Sean likes the easily identifiable phrasing and rhythmic structure for the first tune, and uses it often for teaching. The name O’Connell refers to Irish political figure Daniel O’Connell, who is sometimes called the “Great Liberator” for his work campaigning for Catholic emancipation in the early 1800’s.
The second tune is also known as The Yellow Cow and is associated with a great whistle player from County Clare, Micho Russell, who often sang tunes in addition to playing them.
    Musicians:
    Sean Gavin (flute)
    Mary Vanorny (fiddle)
The Center for Irish Music is a nonprofit music school in St. Paul dedicated to handing down the tradition to the next generation of musicians in our community.
