      In 1939, the year "Gone With The Wind" and "Wizard of Oz" came out, there was no wrong answer there, either. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington also came out that year, and it was an excellent film, also. The Exorcist was the better movie, but The Sting was a very good movie, also.

    Kudos to the late, great Marvin Hamlisch for not only winning an Oscar for best scoring of a film, but also for giving Scott Joplin's music the recognition he so richly deserved. He was also responsible, along with the American Society of Composers, Artists and Producers (ASCAP) for giving Mr. Joplin, who died a pauper and was buried in an unmarked grave a grave marker.

    For all those wondering why the Exorcist didn’t win, it has come out in recent years that Robert Aldrich (who had the film snatched out his hands by Friedkin) and George Cukor (who was a fundamentalist Christian and fervent enemy of the subject matter), two of the biggest names in the Academy, as well as a small cabal of directors and producers who didn’t like Friedkin and his what he represented personally, sent around messages deterring Academy voters from selecting the Exorcist for the two main awards (Director and Picture). Friedkin confirmed this in a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, I believe.

I was going thru Marine Corps boot camp at the time. I didn't even hear about 'The Exorcist', until a buddy dragged me to see it later that summer. Having missed all of the hype....I went into it completely blind. I liked 'The Sting'......but I'm STILL kind of traumatized over what I experienced with 'The Exorcist' 46 years later. Jim Michaud Good line Jim 'Look alive Julia Phillips, you're about to win an Oscar". Reason for her demeanour was she was high as a kite! Read her excellent book "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again". To quote (re what she had taken at the time of winning Oscar) "a diet pill, a small amount of coke, two joints, six halves of Valium, and a glass and a half of wine" That's Hollywood!

Wonder how she remembered so many details and why her editor did not take more of them out. Every other time she does something or leaves the house she describes her exact outfit. Her editor was another woman. Figures.

    "Elizabeth Taylor"
    Miss Charm!.. She is, the same one, shining, hypnotically beckoning and inaccessible, from us inexorably retreating Universe "Elizabeth - Woman of Women".
    I can’t help but admire you.
    I look at the screen - and tears drip.
    The thunder of enthusiastic applause has subsided -
    You appeared in the world, being great prose!..
    Blue eyes, their bottomless depths,
    Conquered the souls of giants.
    Internally - gullible and modest.
    Externally - the noise of the palace fountain!
    From a calm note to an inner tear -
    Sometimes she was obedient, sometimes naughty ...
    She is cute and enchanting, fabulously beautiful! -
    Refined feminine forms.
    Exciting our blood with its charisma,
    With the gift of sensual hypnosis -
    Sometimes, she quickly flew like a comet, through life -
    Sometimes, our beauty just blossomed, being a shy rose:
    Caravel among fishing boats;
    Queen, in the midst of ordinary people;
    Cleopatra! - Passionately, but with genuine care...
    Her femininity radiated everywhere!
    Having absorbed life with a field blade of grass,
    Keeping the spirit - with a share of the lovely eccentricity of the wind, by the bird -
    Shining with witchcraft nature,
    Great! “She is a true sovereign!”
    Woman - a shining world;
    Mother-night of the universal beginning -
    With the light of the moon, she has silvered us,
    She sanctified us with crystal clearness!..
    She swam softly through the sky like a young month.
    She smiled at us in a pink sunset ...
    The time of triumph has stopped -
    It was marked by thunder and lightning!
