  • Ding 定 means central equilibrium, and is the single most important concept of Taiji Quan physically, mentally and philosophically. It represents the ideal of maintaining your own center, the balance of Yin and Yang, regardless of the external situation.

    During the early Seventies, I began taking lessons in Tai-Chi from Professor TR Chung, in Berkeley. One day I asked him what the "13 movements" meant. He then looked very pleased and recited them all, ending with #13, Central Equilibrium. He then said, very seriously, that Central Equilibrium was "not emphasized enough."
