  • Sorry for the poor audio quality, the dishwasher was running in the background and I didn't realize it was audible until after making the video.
    In this video I go through the process I use to make 3d printed cookie cutters using Fusion 360 and Cura. Hopefully the tips and tricks I go through here are helpful to someone.

    Took 2 hours 13 minutes to print a 4 inch Minnie Mouse face. Absolutely perfect! Thank you soooo much! I have been struggling through finding the exact right dimensions/printing profile and I was so close to getting and your video just put it all right there for me! I followed it exactly, only converting where you used inches to mm since I wanted to stay in mm. Worked perfectly! I added the fillet to very top cutting edge so it tapered down to a point and it was flawless! Thank you!!!!!!!

      Ok, the second I comment I have my first problem! I have printed 5 cutters so far perfectly. This last one I just tried, the printer heated up just fine but it wouldn't start printing because the Z axis showed as -3.99. Is this something I adjust in cura?

      You need to re-home your printer through the menu system and try the print again.

      Thank you! Believe me I know how long you looked. I did too. My wife runs a stay at home business and we got the printer to save money but I couldn't find anyone putting out content that was relevant. So, I watched hours of instructional videos on making all sorts of unrelated things in Fusion until I finally got a method I was satisfied with. It makes me immensely happy that sharing this has, at the very least, helped a few. Thank you for watching!

      @@TheBrandonmcarroll So with some trial and error with my ender 3 pro, I had to change the cutter a little bit, and they came out great! I ended up offsetting the blade to .03 in, and leaving the blade there without a thinner portion at the top. My issue was that there was a slight gap inbetween the walls of the blade itself, and making the blade slightly thinner closed it up. One follow up question I do have, is how would you add details to the inside of the cutter, say if I was making a smiley face shape? Thanks again!!

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mitcheld123 for cutters like that you need to add a bridge from the outside edge to the shape to hold its position. I generally make it the same thickness as the handle.

    Hi Brandon,
    Thanks for the perfect tutorial. Everything works great!
    Quick question though. I'm using your settings on Cura and have a Ender 3. I get a pretty bad Z Seam. Any suggestions on what to tweak to get that to disappear? Thanks!

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out the setting z seam alignment. You can set it to make it on the shortest distance, random so it's more spread across the model, or sharpest corner so it's aligned with a feature on the model. You can even set it to user specified and then under the next setting (z seam position) set it to a specific side of the model.
      If that's not getting the desired result then you may need to try calibrating your extruder for possible overextruding.
      Thanks for watching!!

    Very easy to follow along! What size fillets do you usually select when the geometry isn't restricting you?

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a set size. I'll just adjust until I feel it looks right. I believe they're usually between .05 and .1. I just want enough to kill the sharp edge. Thanks for watching!

  • @kbshah

    Thank you Brandon, when I do the first offset, even though I have my preferences in inches it comes up in mm. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something? Thank you so much. Will this give a sharp edge? How can we get a very sharp edge to cut for gum paste? I am trying to make cutters for gum paste flowers. Thank you so much. I am very new to 3d printing and there are not a lot of tutorials on creating/preparing them for 2d to 3d and then slicing them with the best settings. Appreciate all the help. Thanks

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure you hit apply when changing your preferences. If you started the design in mm before changing your preferences it may remain in mm until finished. To change over a design you have already started look in the list to the right side of your screen. (Where you show/hide your canvas or sketch.) In that list, there is a drop-down arrow for document settings. Under that list, you can change your units. Bear in mind that this is only to change the design that you are currently working on; If you don't verify that your units are correct in preferences it may change back for your next design.
      As far as the cutting edge goes .2 is generally the thinnest Cura will allow. If you choose you can make the edge a bit thinner but you will need to enable the "print thin walls" option in Cura.
      In Cura, if you look at the options on the right side of the screen you will see a search bar. Just type in "print thin walls" and then click the box. I don't recommend this unless .2 is not working for you though. This setting enables the printer to print walls thinner than the diameter of your nozzle and you may run into issues of it not applying the layers as well as you might hope.
      Good Luck and happy printing! Thanks for watching!

    First off, thank you for the video! Yesterday was the first time i was able to mess around with this program thanks to your detailed tutorial. With that being said, do you know why I keep getting the following error when attempting to create the 2nd and third offset? Error: The sketch offset created no geometry. Modify the offset dimension or verify the changes are correct. The first offset is created without any issues.
    I was able to create another cookie cutter with no issues as well. This is the second attempt where I do the spline on this same image and it continues to tell me the same thing after attempting to offset :(

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you selecting the innermost line for every offset? I'll try to recreate this error and see what I come up with.

    This is amazing! Just created my first cutter on fusion!
    Question - is there a quick to change the size of the cutter. E.g I just created a 3.5inch cutter, how can I change this to be a 4inch cutter without re-doing the entire thing?
    Thanks!

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to use scale in your slicer program.

    • @hannahsaville6289

      Thanks Brendan!
      I’ve found the scale function
      So if I started off with a 3.5inch cutter and wanted to get a 3 inch cutter I would just scale to 0.86?

    Thank you so much ! it was a puzzle to resolve, you enlightened me ! but still i've another problem : i make a scale of the entire cookie cutter to have a smaller dimension (i make my own jewellery) and when i download the cookie cutter in the slicer, there's a mistake. It slice but the printing is wrong, isn't the good dimension. It lacks height, and the base is also smaller. Do you think i should work on a smaller sketch ? to avoid make the scale ? Some of my cookie cutters are perfects and some others aren't, did you encountered this problem ? Thank you ! Sophie, from France.

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bonjour Sophie!
      When you scale the cutter keep in mind everything scales. Your best chance at avoiding problems such as this would be to make a new cutter in the correct sizing and avoid scaling all together.

    Really great video! But I really wish you would have warned people using these for food. 3D printed objects are NOT FOOD SAFE! (Filament and resin) especially certain types of filament like ABS which is extremely toxic. Even a successfully printed object for food use should only be used one time.

    • @TheBrandonmcarroll
      @TheBrandonmcarroll  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand what you're saying here but I feel that's a bit outside of the scope of the video. The purpose of the video was simply to demonstrate how to make a cutter from an image or other inspiration.
      Aside from that were talking minimal risk here. If you really look at how much of the dough is touched by the cutter the hazard in not that great. Then the dough is essentially sanitized in the oven.
      There are hundreds of people making thousands of cookies using 3D printed cutters. If the risk was as high as you believe it to be there would certainly be word of it throughout the many cookie communities my wife and I are a part of.
      I personally have been making cookie cutters for my wife and her business for a year and a half. Not once have we had a family come to us with concerns that they or their guests fell ill due to the consumption of the cookies we put out.
      So just to sum it all up your concern is admirable and much appreciated, however it may be a bit misguided and certainly misplaced in the comments of my video. No hard feelings, just have to say my peace on the matter.
      😁Thanks for watching! 😁

    • @moreCakePlz
      @moreCakePlz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just cover the dough with plastic wrap and then use the cutter. I do this all the time when I am cutting fondant or gum paste that goes directly onto cakes/cookies without the going through the cleansing temperatures of the oven. The plastic wrap will curve the top edge of the cookie just a bit, but it won't cause any problems. Just take the plastic wrap off before you bake them.
