Marciano is so wrongly called a no skill brawler when his defense was actually top notch. Man rarely got hit with a combo on film.

I agree . His defence was very good as even Angelo dundee Muhammed Alis trainer commented that his defence was better than it appeared. And most people are unaware that he started boxing late so you can amagine if he had started early how much more impressive he would have been .

Combined Walcott Charles Moore Louis already had 431 fights before they fought Rocky. Add the 96 fights Louis had during his 4 year military service, that's 527 fights not to mention Walcott and Louis retired for 6½ years. Those four were already ring worn and washed. Anyone that says otherwise is biased.

His coach Goldman: Rocky's short, stoop-shouldered and balding with two left feet. A lot of people say that he doesn't look too good in there, but the guys on the canvas don't look too good either.

I totally agree with you on Rocky style. Rocky threw punches so hard wherever he hit it would temporarily disable that part of the body. One can see on tapes that Rocky threw very fast hard punches. Most of his opponents went to the hospital for checkups.

Fran - Great analysis as we’ve come to expect. A sportswriter once asked one of Marciano’s sparring partners what it’s like to be hit by Rocky. He replied “It’s like someone is hitting you with a sack of oranges”. So many of Marciano’s opponents seemed technically superior to him on paper, but he beat them all. He had the guts of a lion, fists of steel, and incredible conditioning. Very much underrated on his defense. I’m old enough to clearly remember the sad day of his passing.

Ppl say Marciano was a skill less brawler and got hit too much.
I wonder how much other boxers would get hit by Moore, Charles, Louis, Walcott.
This man never gassed out with more power punches thrown than anyone has ever thrown since while being rarely hit clearly no matter the name.
Started his career very late, thought 49 bouts in only 8 years.
It’s just beyond me how ppl try to argue against him.

Unbeaten is the story of an immigrant son who chased the American dream in the middle of the 20th Century. Marciano’s story unfolds in the back alleys of New England and the musty gyms of New York in the years after World War 2. Rocky moved through a romantic era of guys and dolls, hustlers and gamblers, crusty trainers and sleazy managers, glamorous celebrities and notorious mobsters.
What I knew about Marciano before I read the book Unbeaten was that he cowardly retired during his prime right before he would have had to fight the lik' of Patterson, Liston, and Clay to name just a few. I did not know about his conduct during World War 2 that got him locked up in jail for 2 years. I did not know of the mob's influence in his career.
Nor did i realize that his list of opponents while he was champion were of dubious quality. Joe Louis was far beyond his prime. Journeyman Joe Walcott was 38/39 years old. Former middleweight turned light heavyweight grandfather Archie Moore was 41 and Ezzard Charles best years were behind him at light heavyweight.
For the last decade of his life Marciano wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters and loansharking. He hung around with Frank Sinatra and a number of "made guys." Rocky was not a good businessperson and was lousy with investing and saving money. He left his family penniless. Again his boxing record is offset by the low level of his opponents. He died relatively young in a plane crash due to his complete disregard of intentionally flying during horrible weather conditions inorder to collect money.

If you watch the final moments of the knockout versus walcott in the later rounds you will see Marciano inching forward and the funny thing is the steps where he is getting close to Walcott he actually steps forward with his back foot first. Which is of course totally "wrong" about Walcott is so defensive that Marciano is basically safe and in addition to that stepping with that back foot first conceals the foward movement.
Not something you'd want to try to teach someone because even if it works in that case it's hard to judge when is the right case but damn it if it it worked for the Rock.

    JOURNEYMAN JERSEY JOE WALCOTT EXPOSED
There are few heavyweight champions in the history of boxing that are better known for their losses than their wins. Jersey Joe Walcott's high profile losses is what elevated his status and built up his credentials, not his wins.
During his peak championship years, Walcott scored 7 wins with 5 KO's. Only one of those KO's came against a ranked fighter, that being Ezzard Charles. During this time Walcott also lost 7 times and suffered 10 count KO's 3 times and a 9 count once. In total fights during this time Walcott's record was 7-7. In title fights he went 2-6 with 1 KO win and 3 KO losses. He fought 3 different men in his 8 title fights, was defeated by each of them twice, KO'd by two of them and only defeated one of them.
In his overall career, Walcott had a 49-20-1 record and was KO'd 6 times (BoxRec). Based on these less than impressive stats it is difficult to consider him anymore than a good Journeyman.
Walcott scored 32 KO's in 70 fights. 8 of them came against fighters who were winless. The only two ranked fighters Walcott ever KO'd was an off the floor 10th round win over Curtis Sheppard and the lightning in the bottle KO of Ezzard Charles.
Walcott is a prime example of boxing historians rating a fighter higher than he deserves based on impressive losses. Walcott was winless in all 4 of his fights vs Louis/Marciano and was KO'd 3 times.
The fact that Walcott was granted 6 title attempts in a 6 year span speaks volumes about how weak the heavyweight division must have been at this time. Five of these title opportunities came immediately after a Walcott loss.
Had Walcott been fighting in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, there is no way he would have been granted this many opportunities after losing so many title attempts.
Walcott should at best be remembered not as a great heavyweight champion, but a good Journeyman.

I loved his double left hook, constant feints with his movement that desensitized his opponents defense over time. The massive leverage he was able to get into his punches from telephone booth range. His attacks were efficient like you said straightforward and non stop which can make up for lack of pure speed, by the time he let's off 10 haymakers his opponent would usually be throwing 5 or less punches with less effectiveness. His conditioning was top tier physically and mentally. A true body snatcher that even narrated "Go to the body you're losing your head" over his fight with Ezzard Charles which he eventually knocked out by missing the left hook but being pendulum like used that momentum to crank a devestating right hand over the top almost like a pitcher in baseball. His uppercuts often sent opponents clean through the ropes just look at the Joe Louis fight (color version) and his fight with Lastarza. Marciano was sheering people's teeth clean off their gums with over hand rights and bursting blood vessels in their arms by the end of the fight. He shows nice rolling techniques particularly later in his career that generated immediately into hooks rocking his opponents leaving them off leveraged(Don Cockell fight) He had that subtle awkward angle that he would induce on his opponents and even shows some back stepping into an attack if you watch the first Walcott fight. Nothing too flashy just pure heart determination and power

The "inching forward" movement was created by Charlie Goldman. He tied RM's feet together, a little apart, in order to coach that inching movement and balance. He is a favourite of mine, he gave so much of himself to the sport, was so gracious. He was asked as fighters are so often for a prediction, "Say Rocky, what round will you knock him out?" and Marciano answered, "I hope to win." My TH-cam name comes from that quote.

@Bobby D 'The President' Nigerian Ike Ibeabuchi and 'The Tuamanator' Samoan David Tua had combined to throw 1,730 punches, breaking the heavyweight record set by Ali vs Frazier III. Both fighters had a brawling fight style, they were both 24 years old at the time of their epic 'tribal' battle, and they were both undefeated going in to this fight. 226lb Tua's record stood at 27-0-0 with 23KO's while 236lb Ibeabuchi's record stood at 16-0-0 with 12KO's. This fight is the stuff that dreams are made of. Both warriors stood toe to toe and gave it their all. They both showed us exceptional heart and endurance.
'The President' set an individual CompuStat record by throwing 975 punches and averaging 81 per round while both fighters set a CompuStat record (1,730) in the Heavyweight division.
I envision little light heavyweights Charles and Moore fightin 'The Tuamanator' and always end up laughing. And 'The President' woulda walked through Marciano and Walcott as if they were invisible. Little tiny dwarfism arms never fought one credible 200+lb Heavyweight let alone top-notch prime Super Heavyweights similar to Ibeabuchi and Tua.

Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. No way Rocky would beat a prime Iron Mike.

I am a big fan of Marciano, I think his major strength was in athleticism and absolute dedication to the sport. He was able to throw power punches no stop for the entire match. I've never seen any other heavy weight doing that. I also think that the Suzie Q was more of a mix between a hook and an uppercut with the same rotation of the torso that baseball players do (He used to be a baseball player) there was his entire weight behind that punch.

Mike Tyson was gifted with type II fast-twitch muscle fibers. He came out the gate sprinting like 220 pound Quarter 🐎 Horse, while 185 pound Marciano came out the gate shuffling forward like Little 🐢Turtle. 1980's 20yr old phenom Mike easily KO's Rocky 10 outta 10 times!

The people out there who disrespect Marciano don't seem to realize how truly great he was. Think about it this way...Joe Louis was champ from 37-49, followed by Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott. Marciano beat Walcott and Charles twice. There is not a single man in Joe Louis' career that Rocky Marciano wouldn't have beaten, and he would have beaten a few of them in a more devastating fashion. Out of the champions BEFORE Louis, who would have had a chance against the Rock? Braddock? Sharkey? NO!!! You would have to go back to Dempsey or Tunney before Marciano even has to worry. AFTER Marciano does ANYONE think Patterson or Johannson beats Rocky? No. Liston wouldn't have beaten him either though that would potentially be a barn burner. SO...looking at the boxing world realistically, Marciano had the absolute potential to beat every fighter who ever put on gloves between Dempsey in 1921 and Cassius Clay in in 1964. If you look at the comments both Dempsey and Ali have made about Marciano, they werent fully convinced they could beat him either.

Ever wonder why little Rocky Marciano is always ranked so high? Because his ranking is determined by modern computer metric algorithms. Problem is this man-made program was coded to exclude "WEIGHT" from the equation. That's why tiny-165 pound 'Heavyweight' champion Bob Fitzsimmons from the 1800s is ranked ahead of giant Riddick Bowe. How's it possible 185 pound Marciano ranks higher than Fury Holmes Lewis Vitali Wladimir Foreman Bowe Tyson etcetera? Well now we all know why!!! Even though Heavyweight champions ranged from 165 (Fitzsimmons) to 328 (Valuev) pounds, ranking bodies still exclude "WEIGHT" from their metric, even though they 'Still Acknowledge Seventeen (17) Different "WEIGHT" Classes', imagine that.
"AGE" is another code omitted from the metric. The algorithms only see Marciano fought 4 Hall of Famers and went 49-0, it doesn't see Moore was 41 years "old" and "light" heavyweight moonlighting at Heavyweight. That's why ALL Heavyweight rankings should be looked upon with a grain of salt. Unfortunately Rocky fanboys cling to his ranking as if it were life and death.

"Rocky almost killed Carmine Vingo," well Mancini 'killed' Kim, but nobody constantly brags about that like Rocky lovers do with Vingo. I just love the Marciano haters ! Oh Rocky did not fight anyone ... Ater Joe Louis fought Schemling his opponents were called " The Bum of the Month Club " All the Champs fought some tomato cans on their way up ... I know of 5 or 6 very good boxers that Marciano fought, Carmine Vingo was a very talented boxer making a big stir at 16-1.... Rex Layne at 34-1-2..... La Starza at 37-0... Harry Matthews at 81-3-5 . Then of course Ezzard Charles , Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore who were all considered among the great boxers of their era ... Marciano was 5'11" and 188lbs and for the Archie Moore fight he was 184 lbs at weigh in and Archie was 188 lbs... people seemed to forget Ali standing 6' 2-1/2" only weighed 208 in his prime when he was fighting all the nobodies on his way up ! Think about this , Archie Moore was about 49 yrs old when he fought Ali and he gave him a better fight than Sonny Liston...who everyone still thinks Liston was a great fighter..but Liston had one about two good wins over Patterson and the bunch of no names before that.... Give Marciano credit where credit is due he fought all the number one contenders and if you wanted him to fight 200 lb+fighters you would have to hunt them in that day and time. Joe Louis fought at 198 lbs early in his career ...

For pro fighters, even a relatively small difference in weight can lead to a huge advantage. Weight classes eliminate this kind of disparity, ensuring that skill remains the most important factor in determining the victor. With fewer weight classes, a smaller boxer would have poor odds of ever becoming a champion, no matter their skill. Furthermore, weight classes are designed with boxer's safety in mind. In a mismatched fight, the smaller opponent stands a much greater risk of suffering a serious injury. Simply put, boxing is dangerous enough already without pitting smaller fighters against physically larger opponents.

Size obviously matters otherwise boxing wouldn't have 18 different weight classes. Featherweights would be fightin middleweights and cruisers would be fightin Super Heavies. There are no height divisions, age divisions or reach division, because weight at heavyweight boxing is one of the most important factor.
Super Heavyweights are increasing because eastern European fighters are now allowed to fight in USA since around 2000 and international travel is much easier compared to 30 40 50 years ago. Perfect example would be the Klitschko brothers who dominated Super Heavyweight boxing for 20YRS!!!
"The heavier opponent will have an advantage as they have increased muscle mass, allowing them to hit harder and withstand strikes from their opponent more easily. It is for this reason that combat sports separate fighters based on weight class" - by MMA Combat Sports
Boxing has evolved: [[[[[ ""SIZE MATTERS LIKE IT OR NOT"" ]]]]]
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF BOXING HAS A 190 LB MAN BEAT AN ELITE SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION.
We'll never see 181lb Charles, 182lb Patterson or 184lb Marciano as 'Heavyweight' champions again. Even a new Bridgerweight division (200 to 224 lbs) has recently been added because too many 210lb heavyweights complained.

I saw a video of trainer Cus D'Amato and Muhammad Ali demonstrating boxing styles. Cus said the same thing about Rocky's bending to the side defense and how it would cause a taller fighter to reach in and become vulnerable. I think Marciano's left hand was underrated because I saw him put other fighters down with a quick double left hook.
Missing in this video is how Rocky would damage a fighters arms. Ali said that even in the sparring they did for the computer "fight", the out of shape old Marciano was hurting his arms. That's something you never hear about other fighters doing.

  • @blackdavidfrost-n-margot727
    @blackdavidfrost-n-margot727 ปีที่แล้ว

Sonny had an-albatross 84 inch reach. Rocky had a-stubby 67 inch reach. A 17 inch reach advantage is a tall order to overcome, but when the man with the reach advantage is the most fearsome puncher in history it’s insurmountable. Marciano’s style was tailor made for Liston. Rocky would get knocked into tomorrow before he could get close enough to land any damaging shots of his own. Liston’s power and reach would have been too much for the plodding face first style of Marciano.
Foreman probably the most formidable puncher in boxing history said that Liston is the only man he ever faced that made him back up and revert to boxing. Watch the footage of Foreman destroying Frazier twice and Liston destroying Patterson twice. That’s exactly what would happen to little Marciano.
