As long as credit is given I've never had a problem with it. As a kid I was lucky in that pretty much all of us on our block were modelers, so we shared tips, tricks, parts, everything. Sometimes we'd collaborate on builds and they'd turn out to be beautiful because we'd combined our strengths.
I gave away a fair number of kits and bits and bobs so others could make dioramas for Boy Scouts, History class, et cetera, as did others. We had fun riffing together, and as long credit was given to those who helped the judges and teachers didn't mind.

Ha, this video just showed up on my recommended list, rare not watched Max video. Back in ‘93, I “rescued” a 1/72 F-94A from the round file. An airman was tasked to toss the broken aircraft models from a squadron display case. The F-94 was missing landing gear & gear doors (did not see the missing items in the case but I did bring in glue to repair 2 bent birds whose parts were found in the case). The squadron markings looked hand painted, nicely done. About 29 years later I finally got around to scratch build gear doors and add a SAC white metal gear set for a T-33. I tell folks that see the bird it is a rescue and unfortunately do not know who is its builder but too nice to end up in the landfill or rapid M-80 deconstruction.

40 plus years ago, as a teen, the small group of modeling friends would do an occasional build for each other. We all displayed them gladly. Telling someone that a friend built it for me was more of a brag that my buddies could build well, also.

If, in your home or at a show, you have a display that combines your work with that of someone else, you can place a small card acknowledging their contribution next to the appropriate piece(s). Museums do it all the time.

I had structures built by friends on my N scale train layout. I would incorporate their names in the building they gave me. Kind of fun.

Morning, Max and fellow glue troopers.
It's only wrong when you take a model that someone else built and put it into a contest under your name. Some have tried that I hear and have been caught. A display model someone gave you is fine providing, if you wish, to put a little card near it saying it was a gift or not pass it off as your own.
A number of years ago, I was given 2 built up tanks someone found in the trash. They were base plastic with an attempt to camouflage them with one colour. I taped up one half and properly refinished the other side so it was a before and after model and as the subjects were not my "forte", gave them to the local hobby shop. It allowed people to see what the basic kit looked like and what it could become.

Apogee books did one on "The Saturn V". If you try to build the rocket as it really looked at launch you wind up hiding a bunch of details. The main engines were wrapped in insulation, the second stage has a heat shield covering the bottom of the tankage. Pick and choose what you want to show/see and let it go.

If the model is pleasing to you whether you built it modified it or just display it you have an investment in that model.physicaly or emotionally. If you ever drop your Saturn V, you can always use the parts to make a Skylab!l

On pre-builds, I inherited 20+ Die-cast cars of various scales. I let people know they aren't mine if they ask. Most don't care to see them anyway, to busy with real cars and planes.

  • @Wild-Dad
    @Wild-Dad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've seen that die cast Saturn V ad. That is a really neat display piece
No neither would I buy it because that is about $1,499 more than I could afford. Saying all that, those StarTrek ships from Eaglemoss are pretty nice and a bit more palatable to most pocket books. However, sadly, not for mine.
That display piece is just a far more detailed version of the desk models of civilian aircraft that you have in your home and hanging from the TARBIS's ceiling.
Re owning someone else's built kits. As long as you note from where that model came from/who built it - why not display it!

As a commercial photographer I don't take a lot of "pretty for pretty sake" pictures so the vast majority of Landscape photos which adorn our walls are done by someone else. This of course leads to my having to explain that these are not my images. I can't think of a single person who wasn't OK with this. Usually a conversation about the photo will occur and this helps bring out the why we have the image and what it is we like about it. I would imagine it would be the same with models. Randy Cooper of resin kit fame has a whole room dedicated to his collection of model cars. Hundreds of them. Most appear to be die-cast but many are high end "collectable" types, I doubt he worries about someone mistaking those for builds he's done. Bottomline it's your house you get to put up whatever your wife will let you put up. Oh wait, that's my house.

I respect your point of view and I like your approach to modeling... in this case, I think you are overthinking it. As your model crafting hobby is your choice and you should do it your way, the same for displaying stuff... Diecast or models. In the end the coach you did for your friend is on display in his “man cave”! And I am sure that both you and him are proud of it. The same for all the rest ☺️
However, in the end, it is your shelf... you can display or not display whatever you decide to... and Ms. Max model allow you to! 😉
Take it easy and keep enjoying 🙂

All of us appreciate other modeler's work, and, not to incite turmoil in the group, but I don't know modelers who habitually display other modeler's builds beside their own. There are always exceptions, like displaying a model built by a deceased friend, purchasing a build of a particularly rare kit, being in charge of a group build diorama, or owning extra models used for a presentation. Beyond that, I will not be borrowing your living room furniture or using your toothbrush. Not that there's anything wrong with them. I now await the slings and arrows.😂

Interesting topic Max and one I suppose there wouldn't be an issue where credit for a build is attributed accordingly where the question is asked or the need arises to display that credit.

  • @garfieldsmith332
    @garfieldsmith332 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There is no problem with displaying someone else's build or a store bought completed item. I have several die cast on display because I am a collector as well as a modeler. And in many cases there are no model kits of items you wish to collect or display. If you think of it, museums and art galleries display the art work of other people.

I agree with Garfield (and others). I don't have a problem with someone displaying someone else's model, whether it's stand alone or part of a diorama. Taking credit for someone else's build is another matter, but in my opinion, that just reflects poorly on the person who would do that. I'm just starting (restarting) my static model collection, so right now all of the planes are mine, for better or worse. But I have a a couple of scratch built slot cars in my collection that were built by friends. I'm happy to display those cars with my own builds but I never claim those models as my own builds.. I do tell folks that I'm very happy to have buddies who made these cars for me.
On another subject, but related to your diorama project, you mentioned a day or two ago how much you were enjoying painting the figures that would populate your diorama because you started thinking about and creating the 'back story' for each person. That is wonderful, and it really captures the magic of model making. Good show...as always!

    Greetings from Clay County, Missouri!
    Agreed
I would MUCH rather buy a complete UN-built kit, but hey, If I can get a well-built model for $3 each , I'm not too proud to display it. just don't claim it as MINE ( I'm a POOR )
And, 99% of the models I built were casualties of child abuse. ( me, mine and OPK ) but MY kids are grown now And my son is also a modeler. :)
$1500 OUCH and I thought $600 for a Pocher kit was a lot. Thanks again, Max ! 14 thumbs up! Model on ! \m/

If I were displaying someone else's models, I would make sure they were physically separated from my models, I.e. on a different shelf, on the other side of the room etc. If your showing.off your collection of models just point this out to them.

If it's in your house, it's 'your' model. But it might have a backstory and history that might not involve your talent and skill.
It's all down to giving credit where it is due.

Other, more magical entities created your kit and everyone else's kits.
Therefore, accept any kit in any shape as part of your journey, if only to show us the work.
If all other arguments fail, use it for parts.

If someone knew you were working on a diorama and sent you a completed model there is no shame in using other peoples work be it art music literature, etc. The shame comes from people trying to pass others work as yours. As long as you make a comment in text or video crediting the creator, no harm, no foul. When you did that custom Do-335 you made sure we all knew it was not your creation. Honesty is hardly is never bad...unless the wife asks if these pants make her butt look big. You lie, you lie big and live to see another day.

Max don't get anal about this. Put a sign on the ones you didn't build saying so and move along with life. And have some more coffee. As far as I'm concerned, there is no plagiarism in the model building world. Unless you think you have to design, mold and market anything you build to say it's yours
