A quick look at the path the 1954 Japanese kaiju film Gojira took from the movie theaters in Japan to the American silver screen in 1956 and eventually even television screens in 1959.
You lucky man! I am so envious because at Goulash Mortals I play that pinball every time I go there. If I had that pinball machine at home my wife would most likely divorce me for lack of attention.🤣👍
Sad to say, I've never watched the "Americanized" version -- but a few years back, I was lucky enough to see the subtitled verion of the original, Japanese version, in a recently "remastered" release of the film at Nashville's main arthouse cinema, the Belcourt. Some perhaps ironic bits of humor in the subtitles, like where the scientist is talking about his newly-invented "oxygen destroyer. I call it 'Oxygen Destroyer.'" Naturally, for my drive to and from the theater, I just had Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" blasting from the car stereo on repeat!
If any of the Gloo Crew haven't seen Godzilla Minus One yet, be sure to check it out. I was very pleasantly surprised. Good back story, humor, and 100% Oscar-quality SFX. I enjoyed it so much, I've watched it twice since it hit Netflix.
thanks max you have a definite skill and voice for documentaries. As a follow up, trace history of Godzilla movies and then when the models were produced.. Disney would market toys at the same time as their new movies would premier. Similarly, model makers could do the same with contemporary movies. I am thinking of Greyhounds, Dunkirk, Masters of the Air, 1914. I would think movie companies would welcome the added publicity. Thank you for your hard work for all of us!
A few decades later Haim Saban did something similar with a TV series Super Sentai. They shot some new scenes with American actors and dubbed over the action sequences, and that’s how Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came to be. Bandai America was really happy about this, as they already had molds for the action figures, and they were looking to increase sales.
Thanks for that great look in to the world of Godzilla. In the 1950s the British X Certificate meant no one under 16 admitted at all. In 1970 the age restriction was raised to 18 as films became more graphic. In the 1950s the British Board of Film Censors gave almost anything with a monster in it the X Certificate.
Ok interesting. I had never seen any of these early Godzilla movies except on tv. I saw the original movie Max talked about on our local station (Sudbury) but I've seen several of the sequels on the nearby french CBC station from Sturgeon Falls. You can't appreciate one of these movies until you've seen translated from three different languages - Japanese to English to French. LOL And don't forget - Raymond Burr was Canadian, eh!
Gojira is a Heavy Metal band from France. I still say Godzilla was a failed SS experiment to weaponize lizards that went way wrong, and Chicken farmer Heinie sent the failed results to Tojo as some German aid to the pacific war effort.
Also, I place these three movies in the same grouping: Original King Kong (which scared me a lot), the original Godzilla, and the original war of the Worlds.
When this movie first ran in 1956, I was in 1st grade in a Catholic school. The film was on the proscribed list by the Legion of Decency. IDKY -- probably because 'God' was in the title. A True Believer at six, I didn't wanna go to hell. My Brother, 8 years older than me, saw it and was amused. When I did see it as an adult, I wondered what was so morally objectionable about it. The nuns and bishops who condemned it likely never even saw it. I'm sure the Morally Objectionable label sold a lot of tickets for rebelious teenagers.
I seem to recall you walking into Mom & Dad's bedroom while dad and I were watching it on their old B&W Zenith TV. It was the first time I ever saw it. You said the model tanks were probably Tamiya's as they made the best. That was the first time I heard the name Tamiya. I have loved them ever since. Then you brought me one back from the World Jamboree in Japan and Doyle built it for me. Godzilla and Tamiya have been inextricably linked in my mind ever since...even if they weren't Tamiyas. They may have been. I never could find out for sure.

I don't think I have seen any of the Godzilla movies. Monster movies just are not my thing! Then again a Godzilla attacking San Fransisco might just improve things there.
So the original Godzilla got to American tv in 1959 on channel 9 the same channel 15 yrs later I would catch it and every other Japanese American and surprisingly Italian and French sci-fi movie yes Monster movie marathon's were on but it was ktla channel 5 and kcop 13 as they were known at the time who did this the most by the way Astro Boy Gigantor Kimba headed the morning and afternoon time on khj 9 by tge way when did Rodan and Mothra make to American tv in La I'm suspecting Rodan in 1960 and Mothra somethime in 1964
That new godzilla, is not godzilla. The Japanese godzilla is the real thing and still looks like a godzilla. Bring back the likeness of the real Godzilla! From the sledgemaster 3 times making professional powerlifting history in 2022 and winning 127 awards in the last eight years, which has never been done before past or present by any athlete in any country in any sport, even in professional powerlifting in the world. Excellent detailed history. I have a Godzilla Pinball machine made by Stern in Chicago.

Great show Max about Godzilla coming to America.
It isn't a well-known fact, but Raymond Burr had a brother who was a lumberjack. His name was Timothy, but most called him Tim.

Godzilla is always best in it's original Klingon
Yes I love the score and request a victory at sea episode as soon as possible
So, before I even watched this I was being asked if it was a good recommendation?
Excellent!

If you like the original _King Kong_ then you should see the "pre-code" (uncensored) cut.

See the terribly underrated "Matinee" with John Goodman.
Dont forget other Japanese monsters like Rodan and Mothra.
