For top fill through filter base, correct hose is 12 mm outer diameter, that will fit snug to the base without leaks

I never understood this video until recently learning more about the DSG and maintenance. The 40k service isn't nearly as bad as I thought, and I'm not sure why people are so scared of DIY. It's maybe three or four steps more involved than a regular oil change. Perhaps its time for me to invest in VAG-COM though I could always just ask a friend.

Just did this today and worked out great!. Here's a tip for all you top fill guys, before I opened my toolbox I sat 5 qts of DSG fluid in front of a small space heater, the fluid was 40C when I funneled it in, took only about 15 minutes for all 5 bottles, and I pulled .3 litres out the overfill tube which means the tranny took 4.6.. I only drained about 4.1 litres out initially, but the aamco guys didn't put enough fluid in 40,000 miles ago.

Sure wish you'd measured the overflow out of the DSG after you refilled it. Filling from the top, it should be possible to do volume filled for volume drained, done and done, none of that waste or temperature nonsense. I also note that a significant amount of surplus oil drained out from the factory fill, so I'm guessing a little bit more oil than goes down that insert tube does no harm.
Very nicely done video of a DSG fluid change. Only minor suggestion, start the video with Bill of Material with parts, and part numbers... filter # with o rings, proper seal number, and 5 parts of the DSG fluid.
Many have noted that rather than overfill, about 4.7 liters of DSG fluid does the job properly with no overfill step required afterwards. Measure accurately the contents you drain, and replace with a like amount. 4.6 to 4.7 liters seems to be the correct amount, nice to know when this stuff is $20 a liter.

+LastHumansGarage I'm about to do this on my R this weekend. I'm only at 11k but I've never been too sure that it was filled correctly from the factory. Also I'm stage 1 APR and the torque is pretty crazy on this new engine so I'm sure the clutches have worn into the fluid.

+LastHumansGarage do you remember where you got that funnel with the hose and what diameter the hose is? I'm doing the method you documented here and would like to use a similar setup so I don't have to fill that basin 10,000 times. I'll stop by the auto parts store after work tomorrow and don't want to go to 10 stores to find one that fits into that filter socket hole as well as yours did. They all may have it one just like that but you know how some of that stuff can be.

At the end you were at 54c. But you said instructions were for it to be at 35-45c. Did you drain more or left it at 54c?? Also what type of tools did you use. Can you list them please thanks.
yes it wasnt exact. it is very hard to lock in just the right temperature as it warms up past that very quick.
Just do the drain / measure / refill method, no need to worry about overflow out of thar plastic snorkel tube. My refill was 4.7 quarts. Heat up the full bottles in the sink full of hot water, fluid refill will go twice as fast. The only PITA that can’t be circumvented (at least on the Passat) is getting the battery tray out to access the filter housing.

Why not leave the big drain plug off while refilling? Stop filling when the main drain starts draining fluid.. The big drain plug releases only the excess fluid correct?

I have to say it though; it's extremely unsafe to get under a car that isn't safely mounted on jack stands. I shouldn't need to tell you what would happen if that hydraulic floor jack failed... and that car does not have enough clearance for your chest! Safety aside, the car needs to be completely level for the DSG fluid change, or too much/too little fluid will drain. Just my $.02.
Save yourself time and money... ATF Adaptor Tool For DSG Transmission on Ebay $35 good for life.
I bought that for my self service on the GLI DSG. It fit perfect, gets tight when you run the car and it gets warm, but it has a nice abrasive surface you can grab with some pliers to loosen it. Worked like a charm, just slice your bottle. ECS tuning have the whole kit 126 I believe it was. Also Infrared Thermo instead of VagCom worked fine you have a huge tolerance 35-45C
I change the fluid in my 09g also. I can not fill mine through the filter housing like yours but I still have a way to do it that does not involve the standard tool for filling from underneath the car. It is a messy process to fill mine too if done from underneath. It is almost like they want to scare the doityourselfers away or at least make them procrastinate on it and next thing they know they discover the costly reason they should not procrastinate. Then conveniently they get to buy a new car or transmission. Either one is much more expensive than that fluid they should have changed. The problem with some people is they were bull shitted into thinking they have lifetime fluids. These are the people who if they changed the brake fluid for once in their miserable lives they might be surprised with the good results.
The correct washer is aluminum crush washer 24x29 mm (inner x outer diameter). Skoda part number N 043 809 2, not sure if VW part number is same or not, but the part itself is 100% same

I just got a small hand pump with container to fill from the bottom, takes no time at all to fill. Was 100 bucks on amazon, but worth it if I ever have to change again or add some fluid.

So I know the kit on IDparts is like 130 or so, however do you NEED vagcom to do the service or can you just go off of doing the 4.6-4.7 that usually comes out.
+Zachary Cropper if you want to do it completely accurately you need the vagcom. but a lot of people just guess without it.
+LastHumansGarage That is how I do my fluid in the 09G. 3.5 liters is what most people are saying comes out. That is of course not all of it because most automatic transmissions have it up in the torque converter and other places. Sometimes more than half of the fluid in an automatic is up inside there still and it can be tricky to change it all at once. That is when people flush it through the cooling lines BUT there is a risk of serious damage to the transmission doing that if it runs out of fluid. It is for that reason that if anyone be attempts that they would be best off phoning a friend who is good with instructions and preferably someone who enjoys doing this and doesn't see everything as a pain in the a$$ (sounds like someone I know).
I know it's not the "right" way but I wonder can you suck out the fluid through thr small filter hole from on top using a siphon pump (the one you use to suction the oil through the dipstick hole) ? And then add back exactly how much you removed

@@LastHumansGarage do you recall from when you last did this if under the filter the hole is a straight shoot down where you can put a thin tube (dipstick hole size) or is there a baffle/other obstruction?
The old leaving the battery on the ground makes it go flat isn't pertinent anymore. The reason that came around is that early car batteries were glass and wood cases and leaving them on the concrete caused the wood to swell and shrink as they absorbed water and changed temperature breaking the glass. So putting them on blocks of wood helped prevented this during charging. Just a bit of random knowledge for you.

a question about the temperature: as you in mentioned right after added the oil in . .. the instrustion is btw 35 Celsius and 45 Celsius..." after you drained some oil, the temp went to 54 Celsius?

Thank you again. I don't think tool for $35 is required as somebody suggested. I liked the way how you demonstrated. To others: Let's keep the things simplified and not waste money for these "special" tools unless is necessary. We could not buy special tools for everything...Looking forward for some yours other videos without special tools.

That wrong washer looks like the one for the fill plug on the 09G Tiptronic. I know because I have the 09G and I am planning to change my fluid and have a washer like that one for it. Do you still have the receipt? Return it next time you are out by the dealer who sold it to you. They usually sell for $5 or $6.

Sandra Martinez ... YES, it is the same process. NO, you do not need to reprogram/reset in VagCom...
And I didnt use Vag-com. Just a thermal temp gun. The difference in temp from the external aluminum and the actual temp of the fluid was within 1C in the drainpan while emptying the fluid. 44C drained and 36C when performing the overflow.

I know I can get a clear hose from Ace Hardware which is not a big deal (prolly 2-3 bucks), but would like to know the exact diameter if possible. Thanks.
Hi mate, did mine last night, drained 5.5lt so put back 5.5lt of new dsg fluid. Ran for 10min used thermo gun to check temp and then drained a litre. How much fluid did you drain at your last step? I reckon I have about 4.5lt in. Thanks for your video. Vw said you need special tools to do it. That's Crap. Saved $300+ cheers Jp
hard to say how much fluid drained. its all really just an estimation in my opinion. close enough will work fine.
Just curious too, if you dont have VAGCOM (I do but just curious) cant you just measure how much fluid came out? Then put that much back in? Done deal? Or is VAGCOM a must?
a lot of people do the fluid measure method too. its not as accurate as temp, but works fine for most people anyway. i dont think any extra 1/4 quart one way or the other will really kill it anyway..
funny how it is recommended at 40k miles, yet my scirocco was forced to be changed when one of the clutches bent at 50k.
There was a clutch recall before I bought that car. They gave me one year warranty. And when my clutch started making noises, I went to the dealer's garage like 3 times. 1st they couldn't see anything wrong with it. Mind you car was at 48k at that point. Secondly they changed the oil in gearbox after I suggested to them. Then finally when I took out one of the mechanics for a drive they realised that might be clutch.
They knew that my scirocco fell into recall category. Yet they were wasting my time and money (had to take day offs work) and only on 3rd visit they changed the clutch(s). Even though it did not cost anything on paper for me, but it actually cost me around £500-550 of unpaid wages for me in order to get my car fixed under warranty. I don't know how it is in other countries but in UK I now always advise against buying VW. Unless you have flexible work hours, warranty work on your car will cost you a lot of money. And all that debacle with diesel VWs makes any dealer not even look at VW part exchanges seriously.
I'm so glad to be getting STI this september. Dealers' garages work Saturdays and Sundays, and they pick up your car from your home or work.

this i s pretty old, but prob a 1/2" diamater funnel would work from top. if you dont have the special bottom fill tool

Hello! We did a DMF change on our MK5 TDI DSG. Noticed that the clutch is very noisy now. Been told that more fluid than usual drains from the transmission than normal when you have the trans off the engine. Do you know if the fluid being too low will cause this? Thanks!

Good Vid my man. I've done many tranny fluid jobs and I've never done the whole temp thing. I make sure the fluid in the tranny and the fluid I'm going to replace it with is the same temp (ambient air temp). In other words, I don't warm the engine and tranny up before doing the job. Then simply put in as much as you took out. Jon Paul, you said you took out 5.5lt's and only put back 4.5lt's. Was the tranny hot when you removed the oil? if not I'd say you have a problem. either the factory put to much in or you put to little in. Just sayin.
VW says 4.5L standard for DSG. I have read numerous times that VW overfills in the factory, unless his DSG is a different model from the GTI and needs more oil, I'd say he's ok. I'm pretty sure all Audi/VW DSGs are the same.
Thanks for the video. I plan on doing the same as you did, however I will heat the oil cans in some warm water before I drain it into the transmission. I'll report if it drains into the transmission quicker.

At the end of the video you drained a bit of the dsg fluid after checking the temp with the vagcom, I have no way of checking the fluid temp with one of those. Do you recommend letting it drain until it slows down anyway?
it should slow down at the right fill point.. but you have to make sure its the right temp when you do that.. however.. it will be pretty close anyway.
Robert Nolan I hear from a friend, run the car for 3 min. just to warm up the oil and open the drain... no problem? but im not 100% shure.
I did this on my 2007 GTI with DSG, had to use a VagCom to monitor the DSG temps to drain the extra fluid.

The original oil is very expensive, and some tell me that the motul or the febi are good and have a much more affordable price. Is this true?

i wouldnt... i mean other things can get the temp too, besides vagcom. but if you want an accurate level.. you need the temp.

you want it cold pretty much. because you have to start it cold anyway when you start it and fill it according to temperature. if even the case is still warm, sometimes it will warm the brand new fluid too much over the fill temp and then you wont get an accurate fill.

Car must be leveled when you close the bottom so the oil level is measured correctly.
So don't do it while car has the front lifted.

I do like the quality of that drain plug. It makes most of the oil plugs in most hardware stores look downright cheap. Some of the ones I have seen look like skinny bolts with a big rubber washer and those are the ones that the auto parts stores sell for these cars. They are nothing like the OEM plugs. I would reuse the OEM drain plug every change if I could only find those cheap ones. The motor oil plugs look like they might be stainless steel or something but what ever it is. I have never seen one rusted anywhere. It is one of the many times I prefer to buy a part from the dealer. They are not as expensive as what you might ruin with cheap universal parts.

Is it just me or did he put both plugs in before he put the oil in? I thought you're supposed to put the oil in with just the drain plug in then when it flows over the drain plug, you know it's full so you stop pouring oil, then you put the main plug in????

not sure if it would work, but couldn't you remove the main plug but leave the black tube in, so air could escape while replacing the fluid and when you finish the 4th bottle, reinstall the plug and do the 5th bottle?

Travis Buffington I was thinking this too, but I would think there would be a chance some of the fluid might fall right into the tube and out of the transmission. I think the best option is to use a smaller filler tube that allows a little air around it.
ahfunaki this was my tutorial for mine, the top fill was super easy, and Wal-Mart makes a hose/funnel combo that fits perfectly into the hole where the trans filter goes on top, I did this to the grey GLI I currently own.
ahfunaki with that funnel, if you take the little screen out of it between the funnel and the hose, it flows a lot freer and if you kinda pump the hose by squeezing and releasing repetitively, it helps speed up the filling process.

What would you recommend for someone who does not have access to VAG COM for monitoring the temperature of the fluid? Would a laser style temp gun work if it is aimed at a certain point on the trans?

no reason, just couldnt wait for it to cool down. doesnt matter in the end, because your new fluid is cold from the start anyway. then you run up to temp and set the level again.

What size tubing did you use to fill the fluid through the filter opening?
I went to walmart. It was like $4.00. Transmission funnel has the tubing attached.
good video man...... but i dnt thrust the way you do your final level check cause your car is still seating on the jack i prefer you don't do it just measure the volume of the fluid you drained out and fill up the same volume....... or if you do it ensure that the car is level....... anyway thumbs up for the clip

I like to comment on two thing.
1) the vehicle should be level when you do the final drain or your oil level will be slightly off.
2) work on pronouncing VAG-COM. VAG is for Volkswagen Auto Group, so the G should sound like G ->for group. not like Vag as in vagina. Vag like the dog is waG-ging its tail. :)

If I can just say one thing... since this is youtube and I'm required to be critical...
The old rule of sitting batteries on concrete is no longer relevant... it hasn't been for many decades. Old batteries with glass cells that were inside wood cases made this true, but modern batteries with plastic cases are not affected by this. Somehow this rule persists, but it is not true anymore.
For MORE info... this used to be an issue because moisture from the concrete could leech into the wood/rubber cases (in small amounts, but it got in there nonetheless) and make a weak connection from the core of the battery to earth. Of course, this is no longer true with plastic cases.
And by the way, I bought my DSG change oil as a kit from IDParts, and for an extra 20 bucks, you can add-on the pressure tank tool to do the proper bottom-fill method with no mess. It's basically a garden sprayer looking device with all the proper fittings to attach it (and pretty good quality for 20 bucks if I might add). And I only call it "proper" because that is how VW tech tells you to do it and it's way faster. Nothing wrong with the top fill method though if you have the time to spare (a LOT of time).

does the oil temperature need to be 45 degrees celsius when you fill it?
Needs to be a certain range to work with the fill tube.
