    the point of dragon skin is to have overlapping plates which can shatter under pressure from incoming rounds without compromising the integrity of the entire armor panel. If your plates don't overlap, the panel will be filled with gaps, which makes the armor detrimental if anything because you're sacrificing mobility and stamina for a piece of kit that won't reliably deter the threats it is intended to protect the wearer from. I'd suggest A) getting your hands on the hardest ceramic in the smallest sized tiles you can. B) adhering the tiles to a flexible material in a couple [or more] layers and overlapping them in a way where each layer covers the gaps below, before sealing the panel. C) having a cushion made from layers of high tensile strength fabric [like fiberglass or kevlar] as a backing layer which can catch the lower-velocity fragmentation caused by the bullet impacting the ceramic. And D) using a flexible sealant to keep all of the layers together, like PL or flex seal, as to dissipate more force into the elastic properties of the plate which would theoretically further slow the speed of the fragmentation and minimize the kinetic damage done to the wearer. Another thing; is since the point of dragon skin is to be flexible, it would make more sense to make a soft armor panel [like lvl 3A vest liners] which covers more than the common SAPI plate, as plate carriers need to be pointed towards incoming rounds to perform as advertised, as at any angle where the wearer isn't presenting their plate square to incoming fire, there are higher chances of passthroughs from rounds that graze the edges of the plate, and ricochets which can send the round from it's center mass trajectory into the extremities or even other people. Not to even mention compromising your effective coverage. Soldiers and police officers need to be trained to present more of their armor [and overall silhouette] to incoming fire in order for it to be effective, which the wearer might not necessarily be trained to do, so ideally, one would design their armor around that factor as well.

      I appreciate your dedication to writing such a comment…may have to make a video using this concept. A Dragon Skin V3 may be in the works

    Nice job stopping the slug! I see you went for stopping power while I went for design points. Maybe in the future we can get together and make one with both aspects in mind!

      Thanks a lot man! I really enjoyed your dragon skin design, you definitely won with the style points and hopefully strength as well. I’m waiting to see DemoRanch put some rounds into your armour, I hope it happens!
      And hey a collab may be inevitable

    You'd probably get better results using metal backing for both layers of ceramic, just off-set a little so the gaps don't quite overlap. I've also seen impressive results on other channels making fiberglass like you've made before, only with a flexible bonding agent like truck bed liner. There's also a video out there that fills the grout-spaces in the mosaic sheet with silicone to provide a shock absorber in the gap.
    I'd be curious about cutting little one-inch squares of steel to glue on each mosaic tile, and if you glue a layer of fabric directly to your ceramic it will help prevent shattering and catch spalling. I'm also pretty sure that if you made a fiberglass outer layer with welding blanket and silicone as the resin, it would be fireproof and live up to the dragon skin name.

      Ya those are a lot of good ideas, after testing this plate I also immediately started thinking how I could make it better

    Have you considered taking inspiration from "coat of plates", scale or brigandine armour? Small plates of AR steel riveted or kevlar or other fabric backing?

    As I said on your build video, for true flexibility and coverage, the plates need to overlap to offset the joints between the ceramic and metal plates

    I dont think we could call it a dragon skin.. the design isnt respected has you saw and we mentioned in you first video! You cant have cracks or weak point in a dragon skin or a body armor..
    I hope you will correct that on the futur ! And i woulnd use ceramic like that.. its heavy and look dangerous for the eyes when they fragments! I would try baboo /kevlar/ metal plates
    Still love your energy and enthusiasm! Great video

    I wonder how a shotgun slug would do in this armour...

    • @tylerking2703
      @tylerking2703 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since it stopped a 308 and sorta kinda 30:06 which are moving stupid fast (speed is how you beat armor btw) with full metal jackets and a "sharp" profile the it's safe to assume the slug would definitely stop since it's soft lead moving much slower and with a bigger surface area

    • @Liam_Boschman
      @Liam_Boschman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said Tyler, and the armor did end up stopping the 20 gauge slug but it would be interesting to test a 12 gauge sabot slug
