Those claiming it's a Portuguese guitar are mistaken (as was Steve). Actually, it’s a Spanish laúd. There’s a rig rundown clip where Howe says his sister gave it to him and she told him it was a “Spanish Guitar”, but Howe reckons it was really a Portuguese one. Turns out, his sister was right; you can see the laúd (a Spanish lute) if you do a Google images search.

You are absolutely correct, sir. I did a Google images search, as you suggested, and the guitar totally matches up with a Spanish lute, or laúd.

Steve describes the instrument as 'Portuguese' (using an untraceable, probably made-up word "vachalia'), because his sister brought it back from holiday there But it is not a Portuguese guitarra. It is in fact a Spanish laud, which he tunes to an open Emajor chord.

According to my old LP notes, guitarist Steve Howe is playing a 12 string Spanish Laud but he calls it a Portuguese 12 string which is similar but looks completely different. The Electric guitar is a Gibson ES-175.
Singer Jon Anderson is playing a 10 string Puerto Rican Cuatro made by Alvarez.

Should have heard and reacted to the studio version first and then the live version.....less confusion. This is in their younger days right after the album "Going For The One" was released. This video is a promotional video. Steve Howe is playing a Vachalia and electric guitar....What you are seeing him play is Vachalai................ Vachalia is a Portuguese guitar. The Portuguese guitar or Portuguese guitarra is a plucked string instrument with twelve steel strings, strung in six courses of two strings. Steve Howe masters 19 string instrument which is displayed inside the vinyl album, "Fragile." This is where I learned about the members of the band Yes. I encourage you to buy the vinyl of "Fragile," by Yes.
