  • Supply chain finance - a good thing gone wrong?
Why you should watch: The collapse of Greensill Capital has thrown the spotlight on supply chain finance. On the one hand, this is an ancient way to get cash to suppliers who cannot wait for bills to be paid. On the other, it can obscure mounting debt at the original company. Complaints have focused on the lack of transparency over the liabilities and on a misleading picture of cash flow. How can you tell when a good thing - prompt payment for suppliers - tips over into dodgy behaviour by the original company and financial intermediaries? To help answer this question, the CSFI, in a discussion moderated by co-director Jane Fuller, called upon:
Owen Walker, who covers European banks for the Financial Times. He was previously asset management correspondent and his reporting on Neil Woodford's downfall contributed to the FT’s award-winning coverage. His book on the Woodford scandal was published by Penguin in March 2021.
Alex Griffiths, Head of Corporate Ratings for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Fitch, the credit rating agency. Alex joined in 2005 as a corporate analyst and became Head of Research for EMEA and Asia-Pacific. Most recently, he has led Fitch’s Credit Policy Group, monitoring the quality of global corporate ratings.
Sabrina Fox, CEO of the European Leveraged Finance Association, which represents more than 45 institutional fixed-income managers. An expert in high yield bonds, she has worked to increase transparency and improve disclosure standards, and to educate market participants on lender protection.
Kazim Razvi, an independent analyst. Until recently he was director of financial reporting policy at CFA Institute, the global organisation for financial analysts. Before that he was global head of accounting policy and research at Fitch and a technical accounting advisor to Moody's.

Had some difficulty hearing Kazim (panelist on bottom left), an issue with connection speed/microphone perhaps but found it very interesting and enlightening.
Thank you - Rob McDonald UK Shareholders Association.
