@joanne thanks for those true words. I always felt he was never given enough attention from the media. It was always the others Sinatra, Martin, etc. He is an American Treasure.

In the 60's and 70's he had the most entertaining stage show in Vegas. He was older in this video he really could dance with the best of them in his heyday.

Sammy Davis Jr. Was an entertainer his whole life starting at age 3, going on the road with his father as part of the Will Mastin Trio. There are actually youtube videos of him performing with them.

😔 And sadly he turned his back on the generous God. Gave his life to Satan. He was very open about it. I grew up on Sammy, and it broke my heart to see him preach Satan and hang out with Anton Levay.

Sammy Davis Jr. was known as "Mr. Entertainment." He always gave you 100% whenever he performed. He was really something special. His father was an actor, dancer and musician too back in the 30's and 40's. He played a bit role in the "Benny Goodman Story" movie.

Sammy Davis Jr. was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer & television director. He was also part of the famous "Rat Pack", led by his friend Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop & Peter Lawford. He appeared in many movies, television & performed in Las Vegas. Sammy had some great songs such as "Hey There", "Something’s Gotta Give", "That’s Entertainment", "Me & My Shadow", I've Gotta Be Me", "The Candy Man", "Mr. Bojangles", "Birth Of The Blues" etc.

You can also tell how much Fred Astaire influenced Sammy. And how much Astaire was influenced by the great black soft-shoe dancers that came before him. The story of dance is the story of influence -- of learning from the teachers and artists who preceded you.

This was a true story about one of the greatest hoofers ( Tap dancers ) of All Time Bill " Bojangles" Robinson. Bojangles was one of the first Black entertainers to make it in show business at first in the vaudeville circuit and then in the movies with his most famous movie being with Shirley Temple ! Sammy was a young man when he met Bojangles with his father and uncle ( the Bill Masten Trio ) during those vaudeville days. Sammy Davis Jr is the greatest entertainers to ever live !!! He was also one of the greatest Hoofers to ever dance as well. He played several instruments including the drums. He was Michael Jackson before Michael Jackson. In fact Michael adored the ground Sammy walked on. Icon is too weak a word for him. A stage General !!!!!

I'm sort of related to Sammy by marriage via the Will Mastin family so I met Sammy when I was too young to really appreciate what he did but, I learned a lot about him over the years. I am proud and lucky enough to be a Golden Key holder to his private grave site in Forest Lawn. In the 60th anniversary special they did for him when he danced with Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson sang a song called Because of You that he wrote just for Sammy about how it was because of him, he was who he was.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, this song is not based on the original Bojangles, but someone Jerry Jeff Walker met who used the same nickname . That Bojangles was white. The original Bojangles was not a chronic jailbird, and didn’t own a dog.

Just the history of Sammy is great. He started in Vaudeville as a child and had to wear blackface to preform. I think it was when Frank and Sammy tried to enter a Vegas hotel and they said Sammy had to come in thru the back. Frank said he would not work for them again so they changed the rules.

I am a GenX-er and my generation was blessed to be born in a time when most of the "greats" of entertainment were still alive and doing their thing. Sammy was one.
I remember this song as well as "Candy Man" though both came out by him in the early 70's, I do recall seeing him on variety shows singing those songs.
He of course was part of the legendary "Rat Pack" . Peter Lawford passed in the early 1980's. Sammy, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, in the 1990's and Joey Bishop, in the late 2000's.

Interesting fact is that my late father loved the guy and his performances, and I got to meet S. D. Jr. in 1989 on the L.A. Christmas parade, just five months before he passed. I so much enjoyed how much you appreciated his stage presence and performance. Thanks for bringing back some bitter-sweet and cherished memories.

This song was written by Jerry Jeff Walker about a man he met in a Texas jail. Sammy Davis Started out at about 5 Y>O. with his dad and uncle as part of The Will Maston Trio. On one of our early dates I took my wife to be to see Sammy Davis in 1968 to the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ. It cost me almost a week's pay. But he put on a fabulous show. He was considered the greatest all around entertainer of his time.

The man who Sammy Davis is singing about is a man who was called Bo Jangles and was best known for his dance routines in movies with Shirley Temple back in the 1930s, his actual name was Bill Robinson born in 1878 and died in 1949 of heart failure. The band "The Nitty Gritty Dirty Band" has a version of this song, which is the one I heard first, the one here with Sammy I remember as well, it was cool to see it again. This was a great reaction video, thanks!

Mr Bojangles - Bill Robinson. One of the greatest dancers and entertainers of all time. When he died in 1949, the great and the good all attendedhis funeral. This is a beautiful tribute to him as was synonymous with Sammy Davis Jr., as he said in the video, he could not do a show without singing this.

Beautiful reaction to the GREAT Sammy Davis, Jr., one of the most brilliant and talented performers ever! There is a documentary about his life on PBS "I've Gotta Be Me" that beautifully tells the life story of a man who started in show business around 5 years old and was a singer, dancer, actor, comedian, trailblazer (and said to be the fastest draw in Hollywood!) First of all, let me say that I greatly enjoy watching your reactions! I loved watching you two discover KC and the Sunshine Band. That music always makes me want to dance. Now to the subject at hand, Sammy Davis Jr. I was fortunate to see him perform live in Orlando around 1975. It was the greatest performance that I have ever seen. He was absolutely amazing! I've seen a lot of great concerts from Elton John to Dianna Ross to the Doobie Brothers to the Guess Who to Lynyrd Skynyrd to ... Sammy was in a league of his own when it came to command of that stage. I treasure that memory.

Robbie Williams does a concert tribute to the standards called, "Swing when you're winning." This song, among other greats are included. Any song from that concert series would be well worth reviewing.

Such a loved man! Sammy Davis Jnr was special. A singer, dancer and fine actor who was one of 'the Rat Pack' - check them out. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are the other famous names of this group of friends. In the days when black entertainers - even famous ones - were expected to enter a hotel by the back entrance, Frank and Dean insisted Sammy came in the front door with the rest of them . . . or none of them came in. A lovely talented man.

When my grandson showed interest in tap dancing, I showed him Sammy Davis Jr as a child tap dancing. I always loved watching him. He was one of a kind.

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was a real dancer in the 1930s. He performed in, I think 6 Shirley Temple movies. He taught Shirley Temple to dance. He was the first to dance up and down stairs. He and Shirley Temple (who was an 8 years old at the time) did a dance duet up and down stairs in one movie, I believe The Littlest Colonel 1935. Sammy Davis, Jr. is one of Americas treasures. He could sing, dance, and act. One of the Rat Pack which included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Frank, Sammy and Dean were the best entertainers of the group. The song was written by Jerry Walker in 1965 inspired by the story told to him by a New Orleans street performer who spent time in jail for public intoxication. He met a homeless man who borrowed Bojangles name while in the jail to cover his identity. The actor/dance Bill Bojangles Robinson was a black man. This name borrower was white but also a dancer. The story told in the song is true. This song was significant to Sammy Davis Jr because he had feared becoming like the Bojangles of the song.

I've lived in Vegas over 50 years. I've seen Frank, Dean, Elvis, Sammy & countless other greats. Sammy, by far, The Best. He did everything, sang, danced, played several instruments, walked thru the audience, talked, shook hands, joked. He made you feel he was there for you & he appreciated everyone there.

I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform when I was on vacation in the Bahamas with my parents back in 1969. I was 8, but I begged my Dad to get tickets to see him in the hotel lounge. My Dad didn’t let me down. Sammy was amazing. 💜💜💜
