I have not been so touched by a song in a long time... This is why I love jazz musicians so much...Not only do they write original compositions, but transform and adapt many standards and songs to their own with real feeling and emotion. Beautiful...
So eloquently put! I agree with you. I've never heard a jazz musician cover this particular Steve Winwood classic before (perhaps there has been...definitely will check). The original is hauntingly beautiful in its own right; Mr. Sands just gave it his own elegant, indelible stamp...Such a propulsive and riveting rhythm section! I've become a fan of his music. He has some wonderful previous albums in addition to his most recent, "Be Water," from which this is artfully taken. Thank you so much for this great post and thank you, Christian Sands! Blessings to all!
I saw Christian perform this in his hometown of New Haven at a concert for the Yale Undergraduate Jazz Collective, along with his brother, Ryan on drums. He plays with soul, energy and virtuosity. What a pleasure.
Going to see him Paris next week and can't wait. Just wow, they are amazing.
