    Hi, I restore Winchester 1892 rifles. I just finished one that was not much different than your find. I have old parts left over and if you want to put wood or other parts on your rifle or even relive the barrel let me know. I even have an extra octagon barrel that is reclined in its original 38WCF caliber. I may give them to you or help you restore yours with either parts labor and advice. Let me know, will give you my email and if you email me I’ll give you my phone number. Let me know, cause I restored an M1 Garland last year that was found in the bottom of a small lake in way worse condition than you 1892.

      I know it’s a long shot as your comment is 4 years old but I’ve got a 3 digit 92 Winchester that’s in good shape but the barrel was replaced with a later style barrel and I’m look for one with the period correct barrel markings. Any chance you would have one for sale? It’s a 38-40. Not sure if the original barrel was round or octagonal but it doesn’t matter too much to me as long as it has the right stamping. Thanks in advance

      @@srballistics7176 see if you can get a record from Winchester that might state if the barrel was round or octagon. A 3 digit is probably worth a lot if it is correct.

    Judging by the mix of metal on site, especially with bed springs present, it wouldn't surprise me if a house or cabin once stood on that site that burned down and the rifle deemed unsalvagable .

    Last year I restored an 1890 Winchester 22WRF for my cousin. He found it 48 years ago when he was helping his father repair fences. It was in about the same shape as that one. He gave it to me as a relic believing it could never be restored. I took a pool from our family and gathered $700 for the project. first thing I had the barrel relined and did most of the rest of the work myself with the help of Ebay and gun broker I found all of the screws, springs and stock. We gave it to him last summer at a family reunion and he just about cried, had a really hard time convincing him that it was really his rifle. He loves it and it's a great little rifle with some true family history. Shoots pretty darn nice! and it's a pretty nice looking little rifle also. If you're going to throw that rifle away?.... I'll send you my address and money for shipping ;)

    Your finds appear to be consistent with a wreck of a horse drawn wagon, could be a buckboard, or a stagecoach?
    Further excavation might help solve that mystery.
    The "Bed Springs" that you mentioned are the springs from the seat.
    No one would willingly discard such a valuable firearm, when they are found such a relic condition, the owner almost certainly would have deceased, as a surviving victim of a wagon accident would certainly search out a lost firearm such as this.
    It is very possible that human remains are present, and careful excavation of the area should be done to help solve the mystery.

    • @wizardofahhhs759
      @wizardofahhhs759 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You don't think anyone would discard such a valuable firearm? You don't know about old women and guns then. When my grandfather died my grandmother tried to get my dad to carry all of his guns off to the local landfill. Needless to say, he just took them back to his house and told her he got rid of them. This isn't the first case that I've heard of this happening either. For some bizarre reason old women don't much like guns around the house after their husbands die.

    • @keithlucas6260
      @keithlucas6260 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I would tend to agree on the wagon story. Even if the driver had stopped or got robbed, horses got spooked and the wagon took off and ultimately got tangled up in a ditch, you would find horse remains even if a predator drug off piece by piece.
      Those two "S" pieces with rings are Hames pulling collar lateral tack strap rails.....the leather collar and pad are gone, but I'd keep them and hang them on a wall as well.

    Well done, just preserve, leave as is, don't mess it up trying to take its history away and make it something it's not.
    Find a really great piece of figured wood and mount rifle on it with good description label and just hang on the wall, a far better "talking"point or conversation piece and very desireable to many I am sure, for exactly what it is.

    Ask yourself if all of these items are consistent with what would have been on a horse drawn wagon of the late 1800s or early 1900's...
    Do all of the "artifacts" belong to the same era?
    Those "bed springs" might be wagon seat springs or maybe the wagon was packing a mattress.
    The dry goods and horse tack got me to theorizing.
    Just a thought.
    If you find horse or human bones, I guess you have your answer. They would likely be away from the site due to animal predation but should be near.

    You can never, ever write off an old Winchester like that. To begin with they are always restorable and you may think that that rifle would never be able to shoot again but I can tell you from experience that the rifle is one of the best rifles John Browning developed for Winchester and was designed to be very heavy duty. You have a piece of History that you rarely come across. Think about trying to take the gun to a qualified gunsmith and take it apart and unload it. I'm pretty sure there is a live round in that rifle also so be very careful with it. Good luck. I will offer to buy it from you. Answer my comment and we can go from there.
