What the Americans don't realise is that over the last 20 years or so, the club game in Europe with its Champions League has taken precedence over the International game e.g. Gareth Southgate wouldn't get a job as an English Premier League manger (and this was true even when England hosted the Euro 2020 final)

Dude getting butt hurt because a guy looking from the outside says the truth. We needs more guys to step up not just Pulisic. He’s not wrong. This is why US soccer isn’t progressing any further because we focus on a few players rather than developing more talent.

And to address the player issue: yes, the US needs more players to step up, but let’s not overlook the fact Gregg kept calling the same group of players. There are many more players out there that could turn out to be ballers if called in. I say the next coach should call in another 30-50 players over the next 2 years to get a look at who emerges either as a starter or to make the bench stronger.
100%. I’m an American and USMNT fan. Americans get too wrapped up in “patriotism” or whatever. Hire a gaffer with high level European experience. Do not hire an American MLS coach. We fans want to compete at the highest level. Also, someone look into the front office 👀

Nigel is correct. Stop the mourning and start talking about the next step. And he's also right about a manager not needing a lot of time to make a difference. Look at Morocco. 3rd place in 2022 after only 6 months with their manager.
Hadn't realized he was only there for that long! But totally right. Heck Paraguay sacked their manager right after and are moving on. No need to mourn... there isn't a lot of time for it. The US is hosting and fear more being embarrassed. A side like Paraguay are more worried about missing out altogether even with more spots!

As an American I agree with the British pundit. At the end of the day, this is a result based business. No time for sentiment. The U.S. wants to be seen as one of the big boys in the international stage they gotta act like it.

This is insane to hear. How 10's of thousands of fans could be correct from DAY ONE and not one of these US pundits expressed this info or questioned the leaders for over 5 Years.
As a fanbase we need to reconsider who we are tuning into and who we are following on social media. Its blatantly apparent the US Soccer Media needs to change and needs to be held accountable more often. No more free passes. We need to voice our opinions louder and more often.

I don't really understand what Tony and Charlie are trying to get at with their insistent "big news" take. It doesn't have to be that melodramatic. Nigel is spot on - he's the type of level-headed person you would want making the next hire decision.
This video perfectly encapsulates how not only do the federation and players need to be held accountable. But soccer media and even the fans need to be called out too.
All Nigel is saying is that Gregg got fired, but why is there a tone of somberness, thus the funeral comment. This only happens with the USMNT. It doesn't happen in the NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL. When those coaches get fired, it's on to who can they hire next. There's no retrospective. Especially for a mid, unexceptional manager.

Thank you, Nigel! US Soccer probably in mourning today, but the guy was not producing and needed to go. Managers have gotten way less time than Gregg. He's been protected and over rated (maybe like the team?) The USA needs to show it's serious. And Tony, it is a problem if the US needs the national team to prop up MLS. Charlie, check out Ivory Coast at AFCON. Fired the coach during tthe tournament, a new voice immediately made a difference, and they won it.

Tony and Charlie looking pretty foolish here. This whole “let’s pat a guy on the back who did a poor job” thing is because of how small the US Soccer circle is. Get over it. He was terrible and got fired.
Brit guy is right, this was the easiest decision to make. Greg is fortunate he has a brother at the USSF and that Matt Crocker is incompetent, but that doesn’t make this decision any harder.

This became quite a dreary conversation, below the standards of the show. Nigel was right; Charlie and Tony just needed to concede the point and build on it rather than arguing about it.
The sadness for Gregg being fired highlights the lack of standards behind US soccer and why it failed at the Copa America. Gregg is fine and will be fine regardless if he's the Head Coach of team USA or not, Team USA having mental lapses whether is Zimmerman againist Wales with the , Dest againist Trinidad and Tobago, Weah againist Panama is not fine and Gregg telling them the score of the other game before that free kick againist Uruguay I think shows where these lapses start. A lot of people in England arent happy with Southgate but you don't see England have these issues.

What was so amazing about it is they had just done the exact same thing with Andonovski (re-hiring a players’ favorite manager after modest results) and saw that failure, and they did the same lazy thing with Berhalter. USSF lost in space.

Nah the players felt too comfortable w Gregg as HC. lol some weren’t even starting w their clubs and weren’t in form. Maybe they should get players who’s actually in form and atleast getting good minutes w their clubs.

Your player group isn’t strong enough right now, not enough players playing at elite level every week, but the right coach can make them competitive and hard to break down. You do need to employ a more pragmatic style as many other teams employ in tournament football. Its esp effective when you don’t have enough quality players to choose from. If you could get someone like Bielsa who’s got bags of experience at international level and tournament football you’ve at least got a good chance of reaching the knockout stages of the world cup. Copa has shown you theres a lot of work to do and you weren’t even in a particularly tough group tbf. The world cup will be even tougher where there will be a record number of nations involved. After the group stages there’ll be a an extra knockout stage with the last 32 then the last 16.

You really need someone who’s got experience of international football and tournament football. A more pragmatic style will probably need to be adopted to firstly make you harder to break down as you give away too many soft goals leaving you chasing games which further opens you up to a counter. I know everyone is saying jurgen klopp but what about stefano piolli? Hes available and a slightly more realistic option
US fans have to be realistic and get behind whoever comes in and give them a chance and not pre judge them. The chances of getting someone like Klopp are unlikely due to how the contracts are set up with the womens coach having to be paid the same as the mens. Someone like Bielsa would be a huge coup if you can get him. He’s got bags of experience at international level and tournament football and you only have two years to get this team competitive. You don’t have a great squad with too many average players and a few decent players and the new coach has to work with what he has. Remember you’re a CONCACAF nation that doesn’t play elite teams too often other than in friendlies.

There are so many good coaches out there tbh. I think you need someone who’s managed at international level and tournament football. Someone like Bielsa would be a huge coup if you can get him. You’re not blessed with enough quality players so need someone who can get the best out of these players playing a pragmatic style, firstly making you hard to break down as you give away too many soft goals meaning you’re then chasing games and leaving yourself open to the counter.
Max Allegri might be even better. I like Pioli, but a coach that knows tournament football is important. It's different than grinding out club seasons, and Allegri just won the Copa Italia. And like Pioli he also knows a couple US players pretty well 😉

The money constraint argument is always interesting to me. There is likely no shortage of American soccer benefactors willing to bankroll a top-tier USMNT coach for the 2026 World Cup in the USA. If money is used as an excuse, it is because the US Soccer Federation has failed to be creative.

This discussion shows how much the US players of the past felt like they had to carry so much responsibility on their back - and their feeling that their success or failure would determine whether the sport ever takes root there. That is something that no player in Europe or South America faces since the game has such deep roots there.
the problem goes way beyond the manager, it's the entirety of us culture across the board. entitled, corrupt and arrogant.
Nigel and Tony are actually on the same page but don’t realize it. Nigel is saying to get on with it, while Tony is concerned about how it affects the future of the game in the U.S. What Tony doesn’t realize is that by getting on with it and treating the game like the rest of the world does, it will actually make us better and eventually grow the sport as a byproduct of just getting the job done. The pressure Tony and Charlie are talking about is because of the 2026 World Cup. The reality is that we need to lower our expectations for the group because USSF is a wreck and the players we got are the players we got. Get the best coach to bring out the best for whatever players we have, keep the vision short term, then start thinking about the long run.
Guys like Charlie or Tony need to understand that the truth isn't always pretty it starts from the bottom on up Football or soccer in the US is a business to get money not developing player's
I think that many Ex- U.S National Team players carry to much sympathy towards their ex-teammates unlike in other countries were they say it how it is and there are no hard feelings because that is how it is

We have 18 months or so, basically 2 club seasons, for more US players to step up. By that time I think we'll be having an entirely different conversation about our player pool. That is something to get excited about.
What Nigel maybe doesn't get was the feeling of despair for most US fans around Berhalter. It was the feeling that even with our most talented player pool ever we *still* won't ever be able to compete at an elite level. That it didn't matter how many good players we have when the coach sux.
He does have a point about a deeper player pool though. And that's *my* point. That pool is only going to deepen over the next 2 seasons. And *that* is also a really good reason to get excited about the Olympics that are just about to start. Straight up I'm more excited *now* since Greggg was fired than I was before 😁

Respecting the Coach is RULE number 1, to be part of the USMNT.
If a player doesn't respect the US Coach, then he doesn't belong in there.
Liking a coach or not liking him, it's like Charlie and Tony said, it means nothing.
In this story about Berhalter, I noticed that the USMNT players focused too much on telling the Media that they like Gregg, which is something insignificant in the overall picture as far as success is concerned, but why did a failed team forced on saying we like the manager?
I think it's the problem of being too comfortable, which his a sign that a manager or coach is not doing his job. That's why we lost against Panama and Uruguay in the Copa America..
Maybe it's the same reason why we lost 5-1 in the friendly against Columbia
So, if you pay attention to details early enough you can avoid catastrophes by firing the individual who no longer fits in the operation.

I’ve listened to a lot of CIWYW with Tony and Charlie and they’ve been massively critical of Berhalter for years now.
I don’t think they feel hurt that he was fired, but the missed opportunity and the disappointment at lack of progress.
Tony and Charlie may have overreacted a little but I think he just didn’t quite articulate his thoughts adequately.
Nigel has it correct, Tony needs to calm down, and accept the facts.
Also, Morocco has a new manager mere months before the WC and it paid dividends. Tony and Charlie are totally off the mark.

no more hiding place for these players and they would be exposed for who they are. bench warmers at chelsea, forest, psv, milan, fulham, then a couple who were relegated with leeds, a couple who were relegated with venezia. a player that was released on free by barcelona. these are the core of the team. apart from antonee robinson none of these players are playing well week in week out, even pulisic, he plays second fiddle to leao and had to play right wing or on the bench.

I consider myself a typical American soccer fan who likes football and baseball much more - I will cheer for us but if we lose won’t shed a tear.

Likewise every player ends up hating a losing coach, because they all hate losing.
Players who don't hate losing, will never help you win.

So where does losing and liking a coach becomes a good value that the FANS like?
Sometimes players who learn to manipulate their coach by telling him they like him, it's because he doesn't require too much work from them.
In the FIFA rule book, there is no text in there about getting Points or Trophies for liking your coach. You either are a good player which must show up in the results, or you're not.
When you focus more on the results in the analysis, you find lots of the answers you need to hear.

The reason why Berhalter or another Coach, had to go even if the reason for not performing well is the players... IS THAT IT'S THE COACH'S JOB TO MOTIVATE THE PLAYERS OR REPLACE THEM.
Your Driving the Car the Taxi or the Bus, I'm paying the Fare, it's your Job to get me to where I'm going as the USSF or as the FANs etc... The Coach's Job is to make those decisions and sometimes on the fly.
If Tim Weah gets red carded and yo have to finish the match with 10 players (See semifinal game between Columbia and Uguruay) it is your Job Gregg Berhalter to make the decision which will get us the win against Panama, as did Columbia against Uruguay.

How Local US Coaches will look at the opportunity to coach the USMNT should be exactly the same way as a foreign coach.
It's a great opportunity to coach a Host Nation of the World Cup with a very very very large Fan base.
It's all Positive for a qualified coach.
Of course there are agents who know how to create value for their clients even if they have never coached even a kids team.
So, coaching the USMNT is a create opportunity, that not a question.
The question is DO YOU Have as a Candidate Coach the Experience and other qualifications that the USSF will require?
You can read 100 CV's and hire a Coach within 3 weeks or a month
Americans have to understand their hubris stops at Futbol!
What the U.S need is first to admit their players are average & secondly, they need to develop a cultural sensibilty to futbol. We need to develop our footballing culture from the grass roots. Spain can recycle players but still keep the same principles. We don't have fundamental princples to our football. We are similar to Brazil in that we've not fully established our footballing culture by destorying our domestic league, where coaches can't even develop. We first need to develop coaches who will build upon a footballing philosophy. Argentina are the best examples to do this & despite Messi's presence, the system works despite of him.
What we need is a systematic manager like Conte or Sarri. An Italian systematic approach that covers for our lack of technical abilities & mininaml footballing intelligence/cunning. Put it differently, we need a head coach to teach the game in line with his principles. The only manager i see available and young enough to appeal for our fans is De Zerbi. This would mean players would play on merit, especially that god-awful Reyna. Gregg chose principles over actually teaching given his lack of gravitas.

The biggest issue in Men’s US soccer that was failed to be mention is this. The US is still a pay you play culture. Middle class and upper middle class players that get to be seen by US scouts because they are able to afford to go to the top national tournaments, that play in the top leagues, and play with the so-called $$$ top clubs . As a result the majority of the players that get seen by US scouts fall under the pay you play environment.
If Messi, Vini, Maradona and so on played youth soccer here in the states they wouldn’t have a chance to play for the US side because they couldn’t afford it. US soccer is bias at its core economically and more. Also, how many brown players do we see on the US National team?
I'm not mourning. Never should have been brought back after the performance from the Netherlands. His staff brought players that never should have been there to begin with. Tactically awful, no discipline, and not once did I see this team adapt to adversity. The players' work rate and effort is soft. We wanna see these players have work rates like Germaine Jones, Clint Dempsey, LD, peak Michael Bradley. Jürgen Klinsmann was a goal away from the setting the new standard. Measured progress is getting this team to a final four in a world cup. Anything less is a failure.
They were going to hire Marsch but a small group of the "star" players begged Matt Crocker to keep Gregg... Spoiled weak kids.

The praise for Berhalter’s first cycle is laughable. First, he refused to bring in the most talented rosters, then as the US limped thru qualifying and qualifying was being threatened by poor performances he finally started replacing the MLS lifers with better talent. And with that better talent still struggled. Soccer is more than “results”. You get consistent results when you play creative dangerous soccer and create consistent goal scoring chances. As for the WC group, they scored 2 goals in group play. Two. They scored early against Iran, then Berhalter curiously parked the bus and invited Iran to attack for 75% of the game and nearly gave up the tying goal.
It’s quite obvious the federation is trotting this BS out to defend the indefensible hire of Berhalter to begin with. It’s propaganda damage control.

I don’t think Nigel is wrong necessarily, but it’s easy for an Englishman to take a competitive national team for granted. Obviously an outsider isn’t going to feel the weight of what’s happening, but us long suffering American fans keep waiting for US Soccer to prove the Euro snobs wrong and we keep disappointing year after year. Add to that the fact that we *still* can’t cultivate top talent on US soil and instead have to rely on dual nats to prop us up. It IS a sad day because we are once again finding ourselves in the same place we’ve been in for decades.
Calling it by the logical name would be a start.
