    That 3:30 AM phone call. I sit up with a start and immediately see who it’s from. It's from Vanessa and my first thought: Maria, one of the puppies from Russia was not doing well.

    Please remember, that little Chihuahuas are susceptible to low blood sugar and so when Vanessa said that Maria was stiff and unresponsive, we jumped into action.
    Thank you, Vanessa, for your quick call - no matter what time it is. Your action saved her life.
    This is also a reminder that little Chihuahuas are very susceptible to low blood sugar, known as Hypoglycemia. If you find your little Chihuahua is having trouble walking, or falls down, or is, worse yet, stiff and her jaw is clamped shut, chances are it's hypoglycemia.
    --------------------------
    Here's my video of my Russian Chihuahuas:
    • See my 2 new Chihuahua...
    --------------------------
    My first response is to give her a dollop of NutriCal, but the backup plan is Karo syrup. Either way, it's critical to get quick calories into her.

    I do have a link for NutriCal if you'd like to buy it and support my channel. Thanks!

    I guess the big question here for me is WHY aren't the professionals, people that are supposed to be specialized and educated about this, do not seem to have a clue about this ? It's either ignorance or (and I really hope not) purposefully a way of taking advantage of worried puppy owners who just don't know how to handle this in order to make money. I mean, I've learned more here on your channel than by spending 4 nights at a pet hospital with vets.
    This channel is saving a lot of lives that's for sure ! Thank you for sharing this with us :)

      It’s a valid question which I’ve pondered often. I suppose there could be a little of both. There are some veterinarians who are just plain and simple untrustworthy, preying on people’s dedication to their pet and taking advantage by recommending the most aggressive tests and treatments just so they can line their pockets. Others might just be unfamiliar with tiny breeds which is just as upsetting. I’m extremely grateful for this platform where I can share my own experiences and help other sweetie pie families. I hope your precious girl is home from the hospital and maintaining her blood sugar ❤️

    Thank you! I knew of Hypoglycemia from when my Papillion was a puppy, I was told to put a tiny bit of Honey on his food if he seemed a little out of sorts, but I didn't know of the Nutrical. (Of course this was almost 2 decades ago so maybe they didn't have it then.) I will pick some up for our puppy when we're ready to bring her home!

      13DOUBLE TAP13 yes, absolutely! FYI, most pet stores sell the GNC brand version of Nutrical. The workers will tell you it’s the same thing as nutrical and while it may work the same, dogs HATE the taste of the GNC brand. If your pet store doesn’t sell the Tomlyn brand Nutrical, I recommend to order it online. All my dogs LOVE the flavor of that one and eat it willingly. I wish you the very best with your new baby ❤️

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Karo syrup works well. Honey can be used too. Pancake syrup would be an option but not my first choice. It’s very liquid so I would worry about them choking on it. The Nutrical and honey are both more viscous so they actively have to lick and swallow. Meanwhile, while it’s in their mouth, the sugar is being absorbed into their gums

    We suppose to give our new puppy Nutri Cal twice a day everyday when they arrived to new home?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend this for tiny babies, yes. If it’s a sturdy chihuahua who has no trouble with appetite then it’s not as much of an issue. But often the super tiny and fragile sweetie pies go through an adjustment period when they leave their mother and litter mates and often their appetite is suppressed making it much more likely they’ll get hypoglycemia. If you can keep a close watch on food intake and be certain the baby is eating a little bit every 2-3 hours then it’s a healthier way to maintain blood sugar. But if the baby just isn’t that interested in food, then nutrical is an awesome way to keep their blood sugar elevated until the baby starts eating well.

  • @patrussell364
    @patrussell364 ปีที่แล้ว

    How much nutrical or Karo syrup should I add to my puppies water daily and how often? And an adult 🐕 dog as well 😊

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not put Nutella or Karo syrup in their water. I only use it as needed in case they don’t eat enough and start to get low blood sugar. Ideally they should get plenty of calories from their food pass the karo syrup and NutriCal are literally just empty sugar calories to raise their blood sugar level in an emergency.

    Hi I have a 10 week old minature dachshund who was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and giardia he is showing signs of low blood sugar and isn’t eating I’ve tried using the syrup and gel and it made a small difference but he is still not eating. We’ve already spent 3 days in the hospital and I’m not sure what else to do. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I’m sorry to hear about your baby. Giardia often effects their appetite so the goal is to keep her blood sugar stable while treating her for Giardia. Her appetite should come back once she’s rid of the parasite. You can temporarily keep her blood sugar stable with nothing more than Nutrical. Of course try hard to get her to eat actual food by feeding her extra scrumptious things such as canned dog food, finely chopped chicken, and whatever else you can think of to try. The hospital is a scary place for a sweetie pie and the added stress of being there without her family will not help her appetite. Hopefully she’ll be released soon and you can coax her to eat solid food. Baby talk helps too. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      if she starts acting like that, you could try giving her a little bit of nutrical and see if she snaps out if it. If so, then it likely was from low blood sugar. Make sure she’s eating food every few hours because a tiny dog can’t go too long without calories before their blood sugar starts to dip.

    Can you explain the foster/ affiliate mom role please? Are the pups placed there temporarily until they are ready to go to their furever homes? Also, with hyperglycemia is due blood sugar being low if you don’t have the Karo syrup or Nutra cal is there anything else they can have?

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Isha Wright Hello, and thanks for your questions. So my breeding program is focused on socialization. That is my number one goal. I want each puppy to be well-adjusted, happy and healthy and socialized properly by the time they go to the new home/family. In order to do this, each of the dogs In my breeding program need to have a good relationship with their family. This is impossible for most large breeding facilities which utilize kennels to house there are numerous breeding adults. Generally the puppies are born in the kennel and receive minimal handling before they are sold to pet stores or direct to families. In an effort to prevent neglecting any of our breeding adults or litters of puppies, I developed a completely different breeding program For my Chihuahuas. We have 25 adults in our breeding program and all of them are placed in loving homes. I called them our “affiliate breeders”. Basically they are foster families who house and give love to each of our breeding adults. When the mommies go into heat, the Affiliate Breeder and I worked together with my Veterinarian to breathe and birth the puppies. Generally the puppies go back-and-forth between my house and my affiliates house during the 8 to 10 weeks before they are adopted out. This helps them learn good social skills because each dog and puppy receives a lot of one on one attention and human interaction. Most of my affiliate readers have kids in the home which is extremely important to two hours so they learn to trust children. Once the puppies are weaned and of age they come to my house where buyers can either come and meet them face-to-face or using FaceTime or zoom or some other online platform. This we do to ensure all of our puppies have the best possible “childhood” which helps prepare them to become a wonderful addition to another family.
      The Caro syrup and the NutriCal are both Simply sugar so I suppose if you didn’t have either one of those you could find some other sort of sugar substitute. Maybe even just regular sugar dissolved in water? The sole purpose is to get sugar into their bloodstream as quickly as possible. I hope that helps and answers your questions. Stay safe
