Day 3: How I Got My Trail Name, CDT Thru-hike 2024

- I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the TH-cam channel "Old Man and the Sea."
I do not monetize my videos in any manner. However, if you would like to contribute to helping veterans thru-hike as a form of therapy for PTSD, please consider donating to Warrior Expeditions at warriorexpedit...
Two thumbs up
Stay safe and enjoy your adventure!
Love the photos of wildlife and flowers. You always seem to find the beauty in such barren terrain
First marathon under your belt!!!
5:18 Gooooood morning Mike!
Having coffee with you again !! Energizer absolutely fits you! 😊 Safe travels
Thank you, Auntie.
Thanks for a phenomenal job of videoing. I "found you" about when you were near Anaconda, and have been following daily since then. And binge watching to catch up as I have time. I can't wait to watch your other vlogs this winter, too!
Also recommending your channel to my family and friends.
Great trail name; also, what better to go with the name Current!
From what I saw from your AT videos and so far on this trip, your trail name seems perfect. Also, that land out there looks so foreboding to me. It looks like a place where it would be easy to die. Imagine if a water source was empty. Yikes! But I have faith in you that none of the bad stuff gonna happen. You just better hope you don't come across a crazed rabbit! Those animals are huge and look like they could pack a punch.
Love the lizards!
Good Morning Mike. Another great video. it is so desolate out there, and surprised you were able to fine shade. Be careful in that heat. What kinds of food are you eating to keep your energy up, and your calories you are taking in a day. Be Strong, Be Safe, and thanks for taking us on this journey
Ya that is some desolation out there, and also great beauty. Thanks so much!
cant wait to see more. semper fidelis
Nice walk. I look forward to what tomorrow holds.
Day 3 here we come!
Great views but a very lonely, desolate hike. 26 miles. You're doing great, Mike. I'm glad you found a shady spot. I'm surprised there are cows around there. Doesn't look like there would be much graze around for them. I'm sure glad they've provided water caches for you. Good thing with the heat and the sun glaring down on you. Thanks for sharing the animal and plant life you see. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.
Whoohoo Tin Man (Sjors) from the Netherlands he is walking with a other Energizer this time :P :)
Watch Day 5.
Pink bunnies are definitely the toughest of all bunny varieties 😂
Glad I found this walk. Enjoyed following you on the AT. Have a great trip. 🎉
Desolate - but you are finding so much beauty in the flowers and animals!
I had a chuckle when you said... "I'm off trail!" Welcome to the CDT. 🤣
❤😊, Thank you for another entertaining video. If you had been on a different trail you would probably have ended up with "All Good" or "IGD" for It's a great day. Of course there is already one "All Good", and he works with Six Moon Designs.. it was nice that the group picked three and let you choose the final. My first name has three syllables so I knew I was not going to get by without a trail name. I met "Robo Doc" on the PCT and she got the name because she has knee and hip replacement parts and is a medical doctor. Did you pay too use the water caches? I know in the early years of the CDT. You had to make your own caches in some sections of the CDT. It was a bigger logical challenge in the 1980s and 1990s. You also had to get permission to cross any private landing the 1980s... Thank you again for taking us along on your journey.
The caches are included in the price of the CDTC shuttle to the border.
@@oldmanandtheat3093 Thank you, this is really good to know. The shuttle service has really taken off the last couple of years. I'm glad because it lesson the impact on those roads. I plan to use it when I section the CDT...
So cool to see how much life the desert actually has.
I would do less miles in the beginning, too. Need to acclimate the feet and legs for that higher milages first. Better than to get blisters and then need to Zero day(s).
It’s a great morning, having coffee with you. Be safe…..
Loved that you shared how you got your trail name!
Nice Hike 🚶 I grew up in the desert!
I like your trail name!! awesome video!!
A great day in the office for you.
Mike, actually surprised your daily mileage is so low. With your training, I'm sure you could be doing 25-30 miles every day in that flat terrain.
I have a feeling you are concerned that if you go too far beyond your original miles computations, you will hit snow in Colarado and points beyond. BTW, that is my hiking view everyday-then again, you know I’m not a people person😂. Drive on brother!
Yeah, waiting for the explanation. Why would you not want to walk as many miles as your body is willing to give.
How much water intake would you estimate one needs during crossing the desert. Maybe an amount per mile or so many miles??????? Thanks🦋❤️
Too many variables to guess: temperature, humidity, body, exertion level, etc.
You may want to shield this but can you give us the daily mileage?
It's listed at the beginning of every video.
