    Steve is well known for holding notes. His breath control is amazing. You really need to listen to Mother Father live. His vocal acrobatics are impressive

      No doubt. Part of Perry's musical genius during the "classic" Journey period and his early solo stuff was also arranging lyrics in the song writing process to get the most out of his vocals. What is also truly incredible is to look up on TH-cam and watch/listen to his NY concert in the early 1990s. Every single vocal note throughout the concert is nearly perfect to the recorded versions of those songs and they are all being sung live without the possibility of multiple takes.

    Street Talk was a very quickly written and recorded record influenced by Steve's love of Motown and R & B. The Big singles were Oh Sherrie, Foolish Heart and Strung Out. Steve didn't tour off the record just included Oh Sherrie and Strung Out primarily in live concerts with Jouney. So it was a very short period of time for his official second solo recording For the Love of Strange Medicine where he actually put together a new band took time writing, recording and live rehearsing. That project was a 3 year project.

    Steve always said he had different persona’s for his work. One way of singing for Journey and another for his solo work. Either way, Pure magic. For a rocker try Edge of the blade, Lovin’ you is easy or for a slower burn Happy to give. For Steve’s solo work You better wait. Love your reactions guys!😊😎

    I feel this song is about a man protecting his girl from a predator. Steve dives deep (with that Voice from God) into the anguish a lying narcissist can do to a family. There is so much more to SP than meets the ear.
    His songs reflect a deep understanding of human nature and I think he's had his share of narcissistic people in his life (liars who spread evil and are out to steal, kill and destroy). Listen to "Listen to Your Heart" followed by "Tuesday Heartache". I'm a retired music teacher (classically trained) and SP is my #1: his pitch, rhythm and creative expression are impeccable. I enjoyed your video. thank you.

    Steve has called making the Street Talk album the most fun he ever had with his clothes on. Oh Sherrie was the really big hit off it (and I'd have to believe Nick has heard that one, whether he knows it or not) and the next biggest was Foolish Heart (which is basically the song Ryan thought THIS one would be). My personal fave though is Captured By the Moment.

    Being that 'Street Talk' was Steve's first solo album away from Journey. He was able to be himself musically. Every song is special in its own way.
    'Running Alone' is another sweet song where the guitar has a sweet moment in it!!
    Also, 'Captured By The Moment' is a sweet 'going down music memory lane' not just in the music world, but those who influence us.
    And not to mention 'Strung Out and Oh Sherrie'. In the video 'Oh Sherrie', Steve's then girlfriend 'Sherrie' is in the video. Who the song is about!

    • @MattB-h3n
      @MattB-h3n 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If possible, react to the demo version of "Missing You." It was originally released as a bonus track on the CD single for the studio version. It is available on TH-cam. The demo version is just Steve Perry singing and the co-writer of the song playing the keyboard. No other instruments. That version could still be a #1 song today if done by a singer that could pull it off. It probably would also be a winning song, if it hasn't already been done, on one of the singing competition shows. That version shows that a very simple set up (vocals and keyboards) can be incredible without needing technology to assist in music sounding great.

      m.th-cam.com/video/lDCMasyhHMc/w-d-xo.html
      The above link is to a song called "If You Need Me, Call Me" by a group named Alien Project, which happened to be Steve Perry's band before Journey. It's fascinating to hear Perry's voice be pretty close to what we hear in his early Journey days, but a totally different (not Neal Schon) lead guitar tempo. In some ways, the lead guitar sounds almost as if it has a "Southern Rock" feel or around the same time when Eric Clapton was trying to tap into "Country Rock" sound (with songs like "Tulsa Time"). However, the vocals are distinctly Perry and you could imagine what this song would have sounded like as a Journey tune with Schon's signature lead guitar sound rather than the version on the recording. As a final note, it's also pretty amazing to learn that there were several executives from different record labels that heard Steve Perry's vocals with Alien Project and thought "Yeah, this guy's not worth signing" (One story from the past seems to indicate that Alien Project was close to a deal but the bass player tragically died in a car accident). Of course, it wouldn't be a record label executive, but the manager of Journey at the time, that heard Perry's vocals and felt Perry was the missing ingredient to the band reaching a much higher level of success. So as the urban (musical) legend goes, the manager had Perry hanging around the band as "the Portugese cousin" of a roadie. When the manager could sneak Perry onto stage before a show to perform with the band without the then-lead singer knowing about it, rock music history was created!

  • @joelhammond4162
    @joelhammond4162 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    So after this solo album, Steve was able to take more of the creative control in Journey, and take the band’s music in more of an R&B direction. The result was the album Raised on Radio. The drummer and bassist were replaced to bring in a rhythm section more suitable for that type of feel. (Randy Jackson of American Idol fame later). The vocals and overall sound therefore display more of similar approach to what you heard here on this song. Check out the songs I’ll Be Alright Without You, Suzanne and Why Can’t This Night Go On Forever. The whole album has a similar sort of feel and change in direction sonically. The one time I got to see Journey with Steve Perry was on the tour for Raised on Radio. I’ve seen Journey many times since then but with various other singers. Always still a great entertaining show and performance, how can you go wrong with that incredible catalog of music, but alas there is only one Voice! Irreplaceable. You can get close, sort of, but never quite same. Ironically, one of the closest is actually drummer Deen Castronovo. Check out some videos of his live performances with Journey Through Time. There are also some of him with Journey on lead vocals from behind the drum kit as well. These days he sings certain songs that his voice and vocal range are better suited for than lead singer Arnel Pineda, such as Mother, Father.

    I remember hearing an old interview where he was promoting the album and he said this song was about the kind of guys he termed "sport f***ers." Like sport hunters, they just want another trophy. So it's more like a 'Jolene'/'Fist City" vibe for the story (If you haven't done 'Fist City' by Loretta Lynn I recommend it, it is wild). 14:00 Interesting you say this, I think Steve has also said his writing partner for the album told him that his, Steve's, voice was too good and it made it difficult to tell if the actual song was right/finished yet or not.
    'Foolish Heart' is my favorite song from this album. I'll throw in with the comments for Journey's 'Mother, Father' live and also 'Sweet and Simple.'

    Steve looks great in that hat. They use it in the music video " Oh, Sherrie " from this album.

    Oh, Sherrie, do if haven't. Lord sure did give him a gift. Still sings fantastic, but not the best arrangement he's done. Made some more suggestions on last reaction from little river band. Journey & Tears for Fears.

    Lay It Down,
    Sweet & Simple,
    After The Fall,

    I highly recommend you do, they're awesome journey songs.
    as for Steve's solo his other great ones are

    Strung out,
    Somewhere There's hope,
    You better wait,
    Go away,
    Against the wall.
    All great songs.😎👌

    I Stand Alone is beautiful. Please take a listen. David Foster plays the piano, and helped write the song.

      "I Stand Alone" is available on a Steve Perry album called "Greatest Hits + 5." The album has Perry's solo hits from over the years, but it also includes songs from an unreleased album around 1988 after Perry left Journey. The urban (musical) legend is that Perry was ready to restart his solo career after a break of a couple years from Journey. As Perry continued working on the songs for this new album, his record label was in the process of being sold. Perry was supposedly told that an executive of the label was not in favor of the musical direction that the album was taking, so the label would not release it. Perry's efforts to legally release the album through another label were unsuccessful and the music was shelved until this "Greatest Hits" project in 1998. What is truly sad is that not only did it take 10 years for the music to be released, Perry would take a 6 year hiatus from the failed project to record his next solo record in 1994. Obviously, there's no certainty that Perry would have continued recording or performing from 1988 to 1994 if the shelved project had been released as expected, but the development could not have helped Perry's disillusionment with the recording industry after his success with Journey and his solo project not being released.
