Beyond thankful for all of you. Very soon there should be no more audio issues! Please be patient with me for about one more month, a new mic and mic arm are a bit expensive! Thank you all again, see you in the next video, and Rush on🤘🏼!!
For my money, this is the greatest rock instrumental of all time and is both a compositional AND virtuosic masterpiece. It is on my desert island song list, and if I could only have one song, it would be this one.
FYI they attempted to record this in a single take for the Hemispheres album, but after many attempts they gave up and broke it into three sections.that were merged together. A few months later back in Canada they rented one of the venues thay played at to record some music videos for the album (this was several years before MTV debuted). Back then most band videos were them 'miming' playing their instruments to the released album track. Drummer Neil Peart hated doing that, he preferred the band actually play while the cameras rolled. So for this song they they were able to capture the video of them playing live in one take (the video intro is slightly different than the album but the rest is pretty much the same). This song has 11 different sections, each based on the bad dreams Alex would have while on the road; I. Buenas Noches, Mein Froinds! II. To sleep, perchance to dream… III. Strangiato Theme IV. A Lerxst in Wonderland V. Monsters! VI. Danforth and Pape VII. The Waltz of the Shreves VIII. Never turn your back on a Monster! IX. Monsters! (Reprise) X. Strangiato Theme (Reprise) XI. A Farewell to Things there is a 'lyric' video of the album version that lets youn know when they move from one section to another. They played this at most of their shows. Many times late in the song Alex would do a couple minute 'rant' near the end of the show - the one he did at their 2002 show in Rio was pretty funny.
I’ve never seen anyone explain the VI - Danforth and Pape reference. For anyone interested, it is an intersection in the heart of Toronto’s Greek Town. Not sure what led to Alex having a nightmare about that area….perhaps he ate too much at the Summer Greek food festival hosted along that stretch of the Danforth??!!
Thank you for all the information, Rush is so SO intricate with everything hey produce! Thank you for the breakdown and I will definitely be checking out more Rush, including a live version of this🙏🏼
I was introduced to Rush in 1976, my junior year of high school. The album was "2112" which was brought by a classmate while we worked on our class Homecoming float. Saw Rush for the first time in February 1980 in St. Louis, Missouri. Saw them again in 1982, 1984 and 1992. My favorite Rock artists. Other Rush songs I'd recommend: ""Working Man", "Bastille Day", "A Passage to Bangkok", "Closer to the Heart:, "Xanadu", "The Trees", "The Spirit of Radio", "Free Will", "Natural Science", "Tom Sawyer", Limelight", "The Camera Eye"....all prior to 1982, with many more since 1982.
Thanks for sharing that! I’m glad you have those memories! I have a Rush playlist on the channel, feel free to check it out, I have reactions to Tom Sawyer, 2112, Working man, Xanadu, Closer to The heart, and a few others, you are welcome to check those out and if you like what you see, we’d love to have you in the community:)
Did you know that Alex Lifeson has his very own chord? Here's a short note about it from Guitar Player Magazine (as described by John Petrucci): ------------------ "The Alex Lifeson Chord” - and Why It's John Petrucci's Favorite By Christopher Scapelliti published 27 August 2020 The prog-metal maestro on why this particular favorite of Lifeson's is his "desert island chord." A few years back, John Petrucci went out for a drive with the folks from Cosmo Music. In the resulting Rockstars in Cars video, the Dream Theater guitarist talked about his favorite solo to play live, his mix of technical and emotional guitar playing, and more. Best question in the video: “Desert island chord: You got one chord you can play forever. What is it?” “It’s the opening chord from Hemispheres by Rush,” Petrucci replies. “It’s the F sharp major with the added 4th and the flat 7. That should really be named ‘the Alex Lifeson Chord,’ because he invented that.” Hemispheres was Rush’s sixth studio album and featured “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” as its opening track. The chord is shown above, while the video of the track can be seen below, along with the full Rockstars in Cars video. ------------------ So, I guess you really need to listen to Hemispheres next, eh? It's actually a two-parter, with "book one" found on the last track of "Farewell to Kings" and "book two" found on the opening track of "Hemispheres." I actually prefer it to 2112.------
Solid guitar work. Alex, along with Gilmour and Mark Knopfler are among my faves on guitar. There are quite a few out there, each with their own sound and style.
Oh yeah, Natural Science is a great choice. Do the album version also. My favorite lyrics to sing is "The most endangered species..." - just the range the vowels, the words, it just hits my vocals perfect and I love to sing it Wi-hil still survive annihilation... Sensati-hive op-hen and stro-hong
This is one of their many epic instrumental pieces (their first, I believe). It was so challenging for them at first, that they had to record it in three separate parts. When it came time to do the music video (which is a live performance to an empty auditorium) they managed to do it in one take! That is worth watching (even on your own time) along with the great live performance video from 2011 in Cleveland. For a future reaction, I suggest some live '80's Rush, specifically, 'The Weapon', live from Toronto in 1984. The buildup to Alex's guitar solo is unexpected but fits the song perfectly.
Thank you so much for the suggestions and support! I definitely will be getting to more live Rush soon, including this one and others! I have a reaction I’m recording soon that I am positive you will enjoy from Rush, cheers🙏🏼🤞🏼
Alex Lifeson is in no way "under-rated." He is very well known and respected. As an amateur guitarist for 40+ years, I have been seeing him featured on covers of guitar magazines since the early 80's. Glad to see you found Rush.
As a long time fan of Rush, I have to say that although this is a fantastic track, there is a far superior version on the live album, Exit Stage Left. You really should give that one a chance. Rush are one of those bands who sound better live than in the studio on a lot of their songs. This is one of those. Check it out. You won't regret it. Exit Stage Left is my favorite live album that they put out. They were in their prime when it was recorded.
The best Rock instrumental ever I give you about two weeks before you're shelling out for merch. The album version is not the best version, this is a must to see performed live as only this band can do it. I know you like to play it safe by listening to the studio tracks but many of those especially on the old albums when they used to crank out a couple of albums a year aren't as good as later concert performances. This one in particular was laid down in three tracks because it wasn't until they toured it were they able to do it all in one shot, now of course they can do it in their sleep.
Thanks for all the information as usual, as well as the feedback:) nice to see you in the comments again my friend, I’ll definitely try to get a live one uploaded of this at some point:)
Great reaction man. An amazing live version is from the time machine tour. Not sure if you've done it yet but Xanadu from exit stage left is incredible ( live version).
Ah, instrumentals. With Rush, they're always masterpieces. LVS is from their early days (1978). How about fast-forwarding 3 decades to their second-to-last album, with the boys all now well into their 50's, performing a new-at-the-time instrumental live in Rotterdam? Check out The Main Monkey Business and see if they can still bring it after so many years.. th-cam.com/video/mGf9JcSXvCc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MrlgMaeeVH325rlP
Great reaction! Really like the “burn or return” new idea you’re going with. Rush’s has some great instrumentals in their catalog, with this one arguably being the most epic, arguably.

Jimmy Page did mention Rush in Interviews as one of his favorite new bands of 1976 when they released their 4th album, 2112. If you listen to (Twenty One Twelve) be prepared. don't just listen to side one, listen to side two as well. It's every bit as Important...
