    Hope you enjoy this 5 day hike through Khevsureti and Tusheti in the Caucasus Mountains of northern Georgia. First half is the 'silent hiking' film, second half is our tips for the trail, 3D route maps and chat about our experience. Don't forget to stick around for Del's comedy montage ; ). We have lots more info and maps to help you plan your own trek over on our blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/shatili-omalo-trek/ Happy Hiking! Kim and Del

      Thank you, Vkten! I think this is very normal for so many people to have explored more of other places than their own country, but I think this has changed a bit over the last 2 years. Georgia has really surprised us with its varied landscapes, and we've loved hiking, off-roading, and camping all over the country. I hope you can find time to enjoy more of your country too! This film is a beautiful, wonderful, immersive watch. The 'silent' format - wonderful sounds of nature and some well matched ambient music - as well as lingering views over stunning landscape, much as you would gaze at a view if you were really there and never want to leave. Thank you and I'm looking forward to the next one!

    Absolutely breath-taking filming, such a fantastic job, thank you so much. I watched the film start to finish, and then forwarded to friends. I lead hiking trips in Tusheti and Khevsureti, but we typically don't go over the Atsunta Pass. This was so amazing to see the full trip, and you had excellent weather for the most part. I was also struck by the excellent choice of minimalist music, which entirely suited the mood of the film. Very well chosen, fantastic all around. I've just forwarded to my last group of Australian hikers who were with me on some of these very same trails, back in September, 2019. I'm sure you'll have a new group of subscribers after this quality film. Congratulations again, I look forward to watching your other videos!

      Thanks very much John! Really happy to hear you enjoyed all aspects of the video, especially the music. We really liked the quietude and natural sounds of the original footage and tried hard to include music that fitted and was unobtrusive, so thank you. The weather was great. We weren't constrained by time and the descision to spend a couple of days in Shatili first, and an extra day in Girevi, meant we could hike almost entirely without rain. Thanks so much for sharing with your hikers, we really appreciate the support. Hopefully you have the opportunity to guide more people in the mountains soon.

    Absolutely stunning - great cinematography, a good sense of narrative, and a welcome lack of rock music background. Thanks very much Alexander. No dogs unfortunately, mostly down to the fact that this is shepherd country and the majority of dogs are aggressive and territorial ones policing the flocks.
      The food was fantastic in this region, possibly the best we've had while trekking in Georgia. And yes, it has an 8000 year old winemaking culture, and let's just say we've definitely enjoyed exploring that side of things!

    Thank you so much for all you great videos on Georgia! 💐 A few questions, if you have time to answer, please...
    1) Wondering about alternatives/back-ups to butane canisters: Is it permissible to light small fires to cook on these trails in Georgia?
    2) Did you have any experience using a hiking trolley to carry your gear? I read they are bad for steep terrain (which all northern Georgia mountain treks seem to fit into).

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re very welcome Tatyana, thanks very much!
      1) In most places it’s fine to light fires responsibly, but the problem is you likely wouldn’t always have reliable access to firewood. We find the canisters to be the best, although a multi-fuel stove is another option.
      2) Had to google that, never heard of a hiking trolley. Yeah you’re right, Georgia is all about steep up and down and some rough trails at times, so that really wouldn’t be any use.
      Hope that helps 🙂

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Edward! Glad you enjoyed it. I think Mid-May is still a bit early to even access Tusheti as the road may not be open yet, and the border guards are unlikely to allow you to continue to Atsunta Pass when it is snowbound. Generally speaking, a hike in the Lesser Caucasus is a better idea at that time, for example Borjomi NP. Hope you can get out for a hike somewhere!

    hi i am planning to do this hike in ealy july. Do you think hiking poles are a need? i dont even think i can fly with them with carry on luggage? i am a young able and energetic man. if i dont need them than id rather not have them but i also prioritise safety and i havent seen anyone complete the hike without poles.

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like you’ll be trekking light so I would say probably not a necessity. Kim likes to use her poles but these days I (Del) barely use mine. You might notice from the video that I only had one. I lost my other one on the previous trek. I used it at times because I was carrying a lot of weight because we were staying in the mountains for many weeks, plus we had laptop, drone, camera, etc 😅.
      Anyway, I can honestly say that if I were to do this trek again, although I’d likely have my pole strapped to my bag, I highly doubt I’d use it. So, if you’re young, strong, fit, and carrying a light bag, and the snow has all melted, then you probably don’t need poles.

    were the shepherd dogs ok or aggressive?

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  หลายเดือนก่อน

      They were quite aggressive here but there are usually shepherds present and if not, staying calm and walking past their area without running or showing fear tends to work. If they get too close, shouting and waving arms or trekking poles tends to keep them at bay.

    Is the quality of the water good enough to drink it? Or do you need some device to filter it?
    How often will one find water (from small rivers or lakes)?

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People will generally drink straight from springs, but treat any stream or lake water if livestock graze in the area. Personally, we always filter our water when out hiking and then sterilise it with a Steripen just to be sure. On this hike there are regular water sources, we’ve marked the locations on the map in our guide over on the blog.

    • @frodo5882
      @frodo5882 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoingTheWholeHogg Thank you so much! Did you show your water filter and the Steripen in any of your videos?
      Personally, in the past I have only visited Norway where drinking directly from the stream/lake is absolutely no problem. That is why I am a bit concerned for my trip to Georgia.

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frodo5882 yes we have shown it in various videos, it’s a green coloured stick thing with a UV light that I swish about the water bottle. You can find more info about the trek, what to pack etc in our guide - www.goingthewholehogg.com/shatili-omalo-trek/ You could also use purification tablets or something else. I wouldn’t worry too much, the water is generally good for drinking, we just take extra care, especially if it’s from streams and not a spring.
