One of the best films of our country, and yes, mutch of what happens in the movie happed in real life. Part of the history come from Rodrigo Pimentel, former BOPE captain, testimonies. 🇧🇷
Let me share something that I think will make you admire the film even more. The final result is completely different from the original script. In it, the story was told from André Mathias' perspective. However, during editing, the editor was so impressed by Wagner Moura's performance as Captain Nascimento (and YES, 'Nascimento' means birth in Portuguese) that he decided to re-edit the entire movie from Nascimento's point of view-without filming any new scenes. This is how the narration came to be: Nascimento originally had very few lines, so they added the voiceover to make it his perspective. Imagine the mastery required for this rework! The editor behind this is Daniel Rezende, who today is also a director
honestly, you might hear a lot of people saying that this is common, very common, it is a daily thing, and yes it is bad but remember that this is picturing Rio de Janeiro and you have to consider that Brazil is 220 million country and it is vast as US, so in the same way you have this type of real corruption you also do have excellent cops and police departments in other parts of the country. So taking this into consideration I can say: yes, this is the reality of Rio de Janeiro slums.
Yeah, this film is really realistic, isn’t based on a real history, but it’s very similar what happens in favela. Rodrigo pimental is the real cop who capitão nascimento is based on. React elit squad 2 and city of god.
One interesting thing about this movie, that says a lot about how our society mood changed throughout the years, is that it was supposed to be a satire, even if its very close to the reality, about the absurd of intitutional violence and how thats backlash into ourselves (Mathias shooting on our face in the end of the movie). But Brazilian people were so tired of all of this, that Nascimento became a hero and its actions had support of population. The director tried to create a movie to criticize a fascist State, and in the end helped to grow a violence zeitgeist. If you watch the sequel, you'll see the attempt to undo what this movie did, as a cultural phenomenon, being incredibly literal on its critics, making the movie even a little too obvious, just to not get misunderstood.
Guy the violence and corruption in USA is a padwan level close of Brazil and Latin America. Yes it's real, the reality of Brazil is exactly like this movie, and politic corruption have connections with all these stuffs, the second movie is about it. By the way they give up to make the third because became too much dangeurs to show more layers of corruption, and they were forced to stop.
@@jufialio6287 I figured it was worse but wanted to be open to not stereotyping Latin Americans. Being from Peru I have seen some crazy things too… thank you so much for commenting and watching
@TheBigLlamaShow i'm brazilian, and i say it because all Latin America suffer with government corruption that feed all these situation, these governments have the same ideology and behaviors, offcourse that Latin America is big, diverse and warm, we the people are friendly and do the best that we can. But our governments f**k us, we live in this situation that make us 3rd world forever. By the way, because this scenario, happen the mass ilegal immigration problem in USA. We live in high absurd tributes, high absurd corruption and high violence in specific poor locations but that can happen everywhere. I love the human relations between us Latinos, we have something special about it, but all the others things are terrible, is the reverse situation of 1st word.
@@TheBigLlamaShow the writer said they had to make it lighter and he didnt do it enough because he was threatened by the cartels and gangs and had to flee to the US
This does not happen all at once. But yes, every scene depicted here has occurred, time and again. You should also consider that these events happen in the outskirts of the city - far from the tourist shinny bubble - where the law is not enforced with the same approach. The corruption is especially stronger in Rio, for cultural reasons. There is this romanticized idea of being smart and being ahead of the others, the "malandro" fellow. He gets things his way being a smart pants and talking to everybody, knowing everybody, getting things for free, etc. This is enhanced with the humongous quantity of foreigners visiting the city, and also the history of being the former capital of the country, when the slavery was abolished in 1888. At the time black folks had to go up the hills in order to build their shaks, because the owners simply expelled them from their properties. There was no plan to integrate those people into society. So Rio is this melting pot of chaos. But the countryside of Brazil and especially the South region is very peaceful, in general.
I wish there was a way to see the reality of places instead of the tourist attraction and what the government sells in movies. Thank you for sharing and giving me the realistic view.

You guys listen the word “Spanish” and forget about the rest of the sentence. Unlike others the dude made very clear that he knows what language Brazilians speak. Chill. 😂
The movie is set in 1997, so it's not exactly like that anymore, but most of these things still happen in Rio. this war will never end
Wow, that's crazy and it just shows how media controls the image of what others see.
Deveria acabar. O Rio é lindo. Não deveria ter esse câncer.
The sequel still is going to this day
it's not like that, it's worse. nowadays, even the BOPE is corrupt.
To be honest in my opinion it was better. It was just a mess. Now the crooks became professionals.
