My second "commercial job" tying was for 12 dozen hornberg, in 4 sizes... I tied nothing but hornbergs for DAYS... That said, this is a killer pattern on many wild brook trout waters in northern Maine. It seems to fish well, both wet and dry. My uncle & cousin absolutely swear by it. I, however, can't BUY a fish with one. Even fishing the same spot...
Hey Davie, thanks for sharing your tie of this classic fly. I fish it regularly in lakes as a streamer and it always produces fish. I like the cdc touch. Cheers!
Nice tie Davie. Frank Hornberg created this fly not far from the waters I fish in Central Wisconsin. A very popular fly in my neck of the woods. Cheers!
The fly originated in my neck of the woods. I have tied quite a few in my day. Just never had a ton of luck fishing them dry. For me, they work better when fished wet. Your version looks great.
In New England, Hornbergs are quite popular. They are fished as streamers, as wet flies, as dry flies, or damp (meaning in the surface film). Davie, I would love to see your take on another old New England "damp" fly - the Brown Owl. Is there any chance of you making a video of you tying that fly? Thanks for all the great instruction and techniques, and for great ideas on designing my own flies.
I came across a few shrimp patterns in a book of salmon flies i have by Chris Mann , Never realised until now, years later that you are the tyer it refers to .Page 41. Titled Blue an magenta shrimp , interesting patterns.
Love the tie and thank you sir. You make everything look so easy. Practice right. Just curious… how long have you been tying flies? So gifted. Thanks for all you do for our sport.
Morning Mark, I started tying in 1983 so nearly 40 years now and I am sure I have only scratched the surface when it comes down to learning this great hobby..I'm glad you enjoyed the video. All the very best Davie..
To me the Hornberg seams to be a dry fly, then at other times it looks like a wet fly. I think I never really know. I have fished it as a dry fly at times and then let it "Drown,* at the end of the drift. I am a little hesitant and have tried to dry it out at times.
My husband loves your channel an watches many times during the day. There is a question if I may ask. He thought he saw you doing a leadwing coachman, and I have been looking for days. Is it possible that you did. An where can I look to find it. Your flies are great to watch, especially when you did one blind folded. Thank you for all you do!

CDC…great idea that help floating. Very popular around here in August. Love it!
I like the cdc . I always used yellow hackle tips for underwing. CDC will make it more buoyant. Good idea.

Another school day, thanks for that Davie. I’ve never seen that one before.
Always a joy to watch you tie no matter what pattern is in the vise. Thank you Davie.

A well done American classic fly tks davie
Unusual looking fly! Thanks Davie
I've never tried folding hackle like that, but now I will! Thanks. Subbed.
Hornberg's are one of my favorite streamers. I'll have to try this. I may try some craft fur for the underwing and see how that works
Love the look Davie. Masterclass.
Cheers, stay well. Big Davie
WOW.
That’s an old pattern mate.
We use to use it here 30+ years back when I was guiding on the Grand River in Ontario. Canada.
Your flies are always so nicely made!
Love watching a MASTER at work! You should try fishing with them. Wet or dry they work Great in New Hampshire USA!
fantastic Sir. I fish the Hornberg here in Nova Scotia as a wet or streamer pattern for brookies
Very pretty and so precise as usual!
Nice fly!
Very nice variant. I would also swing this puppy!
