For everyone wondering why bands didn't get nominated, it's prob cause they didn't submit. I can imagine a lot of bands don't bother to submit to the Grammys because NO ONE GIVES A F**K ABOUT THE GRAMMYS anymore lol We all know the Nik Nocturnal Awards are where it's at!
thats what i was thinking with Sleep Token, they stay anonymous (unless they don't anymore feel free to correct me), plus I don't think it would fit their character or the whole thing they have created. even though TMBTE would be something i would love to see there

They gotta add best metal album and best metal song to the list. Best rock album isn’t enough. Heavener by Invent Animate, TMBTE by Sleep Token, etc. all deserved a chance to win

I mean there are a few genuine ones out there but a lot of them are hosted in London each year like heavy music awards, kerrang awards and golden gods by metalhammer. But it would be sick to have a rock/metal one where we celebrate all of the different sub genres. So, have categories for best metalcore album, best death metal song, best punk album etc.

Please god no. I love indie rock and there's so much more that it could be given to! Blood Red Shoes, Aligns, Julie, Pretty Sick, Mr. Gnome, The Armed or Destroy Boys would all be way better picks but throwing imagine dragons in there will muddy the indie scene more than it already is

"Indie" and then lists the most pop artists avaiable that have nothing to do with indie at all lmao. All of those you mentioned are rock pop or pop, even if they get some alternative vibes.

Stuff like Oasis, Blur, White Stripes, The Strokes, Stereophonics, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, Kings Of Leon, Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Tame Impala, and The Black Keys.
That’s all Indie, it’s NOT Rock and I don’t know why they always get lumped in with Rock when they are not Rock at all.
I would say R.E.M, The Pixies and Crowded House all started this Indie thing.
Imagine Dragons is Alternative. They're too all over the place to be indie.

If one song of Ghost's Phantomime should be nominated for anything, it should have been "Jesus He Knows Me" in some rock category. This cover is just too good. "Phantom of the Opera" isn't bad at all, but even myself as a huge Ghost fan cannot really understand how that song can be nominated for a grammy.
I think it's because Phantom Of The Opera is a cover from Iron Maiden? As a Ghost fan, I'd be happy with any song from Phantomime ngl, and having either Phantom, Jesus and even Another Hero I would be super happy

at least from my perspective as a bass player, “Phantom of The Opera” is such difficult song to play. And at least in my opinion they did the OG justice. Ira not better then the OG but the tones and pure musicianship from that song is pretty great.

This. These smooth-brained folks see the name Olivia Rodrigo and are immediately dismissive towards her without even giving her stuff a listen. Same goes to boygenius, who have put out a fantastic album with The Record.

Actually Ghost exploded worldwide with their 3rd album Meliora released in 2015 and look at the venues they play in as headliners as of today. Sleep Token are going the same way since TMBTE...their...3rd album too.
Ghost is always my yearly most listened to band. I love ghost. Damn near listen to a song of theirs every day. A Grammy from a cover song isn’t deserved imo

As much as I really enjoyed the song (probably my favorite song off of Phantomime), I'd have to agree there. Seems a little odd to have a cover of a 43 year old song be nominated.

Ghost is legendary. Not metal, but legendary. Just as much pop as rock.
I feel like they’ll just tease us with Slipknot and Spiritbox, but it’ll absolutely be Metallica, Ghost, or Disturbed. They always like to give us a glimmer of hope, and then crush us.
It'll be Ghost. Disturbed, Metallica and Slipknot are all 20+ year old bands, like how Rolling Stone always has The Rolling Stones somewhere in the top 10, even if its top "new songs of 2023" . Ghost is that band everyone likes because everyone else does, the MGK affect. Spiritbox is newer and up and coming but they dont have the theatrical stage aspect like Ghost does.

Ghost is maybe my favorite band, but this one belongs to Spiritbox. It's like when they nominated Amazonia by Gojira a few years back. The thing is that winning a Grammy would actually do something for Spiritbox- these other bands don't really need it.
Shocked that Sleep Token wasn't nominated after so many people were saying it was the album of the year.

I've never listened to Paramore, but I just checked out a few songs off that album they got nominated for. Fucking loving it so far, they've got some killer vibes and I can definitely groove to the music. Gonna have to check out the rest of their music too.
As far as nominations go, I wish Sleep Token had gotten a nomination. They only recently popped up on my radar, but I've already bought all of their albums and I've been listening to them on repeat. TMBTE is so fucking good.

Ghost’s cover was fantastic IMO. Vocals were a bit off but I love the instrumentals and how they put it in their own style. I feel like Spiritbox deserves it the most though. They are amazing musicians

A cover shouldn’t be nominated for a Grammy though, and that’s the point. Nothing against ghost but unless it’s for an original song they don’t deserve the nomination. That’s like nominating falling in reverse for their last resort cover.

I know a lot of people didn’t rock with Life Is But A Dream but it was so creative and had a lot of ambition, so it would’ve been so cool to see them nominated. (Even if the GRAMMYS don’t nominate based on that 💀)
Honestly that album deserves so much more credit. Takes a couple listens to really get into it but I love it and seeing it live was insanely cool. Definitely at least deserved a nod

People really need to stop considering Ghost as a metal band, not as a detriment to Ghost, but because Ghost itself isn’t just metal. It’s basically Tobias Forge making music he likes. The songs are catchy, they’re bops, and they add some spice here and there. There’s no point in trying to squeeze Ghost into a genre when each album is him trying to emulate different styles or eras or themes. It’s just fun.
They got lumped in as metal due to their early albums having heavy NWOBHM and Power Metal influence, but since then they’ve leaned more into classic rock/whatever the fuck Tobias wants.
both "But Here We Are" and "This is Why" are fucking amazing rock albums btw, easily my top 5 of the year
I feel like there should be a third category between metal and rock - metalcore/hard-rock-adjacent stuff, because we're seeing a major blend between these genres with Bad Omens, Sleep Token - they aren't metalcore, but not necessarily rock.
We already have the Nic Nocturnal Awards.
It's called Alt Metal, ala Deftones, SOAD, Tool, Faith no More, etc.

Listen, I'm a Ghost fan. I have all their music, many of their vinyls, several shirts, posters, etc.. I fucking love that band... I feel like Ghost is included here because people who don't know rock/metal take ONE look at Ghost and say, "oh, they're pretty popular, and they must be heavy by the looks of them, so we'll throw them on there to appease the metalheads..." Sleep Token belongs here. TMBTE is one of my favorite albums of all time, let alone this year. No album has moved me like that one did. That's a huge snub, as far as I'm concerned. It's inexcusable.
I would include orbit culture and In Flams here as well, sure it may be a stretch as they don’t have pop appeal but damn are they great this year
Yeah I haven't listened that much to Ghost but I still cringe everytime someone says it's metal or lumps it together with metal. Lyrical and aesthetic themes are like 5% of a genre. I could make a band called Lucifer's Razor Dildo and be on stage in corpse paint but if the music is just me and my buddy playing bossa nova on a vibraphone, we would not be metal. I know the mainstream music world sucks at non mainstream music but how can you know so little about a subject you're seemingly interested in?
It's the same thing with spotify's playlists. I got Ghost in the Death Metal playlist, Sabaton in viking metal and Meshuggah in metalcore. I know they're generated specifically for the user but they are so off that it's honestly almost insulting.

This is why is so good honestly. Very consistent, fun, excellent production and the instrumentation is great. I think it's clearly better than the other albums of this list. So happy to see spiritbox

There were a few years where August Burns Red was one of the Grammy’s go-to picks for metal. Wouldn’t mind seeing that come back, but good for Spiritbox for getting even more spotlight.
I'm so happy that Spiritbox and boygenius, two of my favourite bands, are nominated but that said I would probably call boygenius some kind of indie rather than rock. So I do understand not wanting them on the rock nominations but it still hurts to see people's reaction to it
Think it's mostly because there should probably be a separate category for indie I guess. It's difficult when there are just so many subgenres of rock and metal these days. I've never heard of boygenius until this but I'm not an indie fan really. Based on Wikipedia I'm guessing they're kinda folky as well. I'm sure you're buzzed that they got nominated at least

Foo Fighters' new album 'But Here We Are' is absolutely phenomenal. It's cathartic and emotional and a perfect listen from front to back. Hope it wins tbh.
The metal category is horrible like the past few years, 2018 and '19 had great nominations.
Olivia Rodrigo is a good pick for rock because that song carries the Riot Grrrl punk sound from Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Breeders, and X, and more importantly it'll piss off all the rock boomers.

Loving the knosis in the background. Saw them on Thursday along with void of vision, make them suffer and stray from the path in Leeds, UK. Got a nice elbow and resulting black eye in the pit during doomswitch and plenty of bruises but was definitely worth it. Keep it up Nik love the content
Okay I think you're being kind of way too hard on Olivia. I mean the reason for you to dislike her isn't a very good one imo, and also Olivia is at least enough of a good representation of Pop Punk with this song more than freaking MGK because she's actually young (20 years old), and her new album Guts is pretty good imo.
Boygenius is a good band and this song is pretty good although you can consider them more of an Alternative band than a Rock band.
Paramore being nominated is actually a huge W, this is why is a great alt rock/post punk album.

honestly there was so much released this year more deserving of Grammy levels, but they're either too underground or they're decently out there but not able to be commercialized to an extreme. Deadlands - Crushed, Anaal Nathrakh - Endarkenment, Star of Khorola's self titled EP, Lipoma's entire 2023 lineup, Delightful Dekadenss - Ala Maji, MGMT - Mother Nature, August is Falling's self titled EP, and SO SO much more!
I was just talking about this with my friends I play in a band with but I honestly have to say that this is a surprisingly solid year for rock/metal since we've got a lot of really good nominations, like I kind of expected to see the Foos on there but I'm still pleasantly surprised about Metallica, Ghost, Slipknot, QOTSA, Spiritbox and even the new Stones song that had recently come out

Idk, but these grammys have to start somewhere, otherwise the youth will listen to music like "regueton" forever :'(
@@northnick3317 I mean, I don't think we genuinely need the grammys to introduce people to more subgenres. Most of us didn't start with Tech Death, but with gateway bands like Slipknot anyways. What I would like is music awards for those more niche subgenres, made by the community.
@@lutter4818 You're right, I get your point. However, it's nowhere near common that the Oscars nominate horror movies, than Get Out happened. Hell, once upon a time, animated movies didn't get shit (besides their music) but that changed throughout the years. What I'm saying is that little by little, they should expand their horizon to other subgenres that deserve much needed attention, besides the ones that are needlessly popular. Spiritbox is definitley a win for us, since we never expected to see their names in the grammys. Theirs, and Death Angel's Humanicide, especially Tool's Fear Inuculum's win, are reasons for me to have hope that more subgenres should get the attention too.
@@northnick3317 Maybe, but then again Horror movies are like a bigger genre, you probably wouldn't see a specific subgenre like Slasher or Found Footage in particular. That is kinda how I feel about metal at the grammys. We're getting metal, but not specific subgenres.

Yeah it's insane that Rodrigo released one (1) song two years ago and apparently that means all her songs are Paramore ripoffs. It's even crazier considering Hayley Williams herself said she had no problem with Good 4 U.

I feel like Nik is way to critical to newer stuff. When a rock song isn't from a boomer band, or a band that isn't mainstream its trash. Don't get me wrong alot of mainstream stuff sucks, but it doesn't mean everything does. I personaly am not really into Olivia Rodrigo, however i do think that she is taking a lot of rock elements and showing it to a younger more mainstream audience. People being introduced to rock is always better. We shouldn't gatekeep rock.

Nah I won't take the Olivia Rodrigo disrespect. Ballad Of A Homeschooled Girl is ACTUALLY a good song. And she isn't just ripping off Paramore, on the song. It's an actually good song with good lyrics, a catchy chorus, and good instrumentation that SHE WROTE HERSELF. If Nik listened to it I think he would actually like it, it's really fun.

I'm ok with Olivia Rodrigo being nominated here, but I wish it was with the All American track instead, and props to Spiritbox for representing Modern Metalcore on the nominess, last time I saw something like that was with I Prevail back in 2019, we need more Metalcore stuff on Grammys. 🙌

Best Metal & Rock categories are insanity. It's like they went to the charts, seen what sold the best, and just added nominated them. And then added Spiritbox to be edgy.
Absolutely love Boygenius and I'm stoked their album is up for 7 Grammys. That said, I was surprised to see them in the rock category. They have rock songs, but "Not Strong Enough" is not one of them. It's pop anthem banger and it slaps, but I wouldn't call it rock. For those curious, I'd call Boygenius an alternative indie folk/pop/rock band.
I'm interested to see if they can win the general categories up against Taylor Swift, but they also nominated in alternative, which I think they could win. In any case, super stoked.
