To the people saying the horses don't like jumping etc, my horse loves to jump, I retired him three years ago at 17 because we were worried an old injury would act up from when he got into a driving accident (before I bought him he pulled wagons in parades). Even though he is retired he jumps any jumps I leave in the field, on his own with no prompting. We were jumping up to 4.5 feet
Shelby B lmao a barrel racing horse at my farm who has never jumped in his entire life jumped the 4”6 fence that surrounds his paddock for no reason. He could have ran away because no one was there but nope he just grazed for a while until someone discovered him.
It's so satisfying watching these videos and determining what the contestants do well and on which points they could improve themselves. I learn a lot of it!
@@emotionalequestrian23 i have bitten myself with the wipe, i didn't feel anything, so i imagine that an animal that is 5 times myself wouldn't feel it, of course the horse was doing well but u need to make sure that is gonna keep it on... show jumpers and the ones that do cross country normally do it, cause we need to make sure that the horse is not gonna stop
I was a fence judge at Head of the Lake and really wanted to see how Fence 9 rode, as it took out many of our first riders...thanks for putting this up. The "highlights" in the media are not what I'm usually looking for!
You did a great job, I loved your editing. I keep trying to get there, but never have the time and money, so I am apprectiative to everyone who goes to the effort to put a great video of all the excitement and the brave horses and riders on You tube
Great montage!!! I love how at the end you has footage of people standing next to the jumps. I don't think people in other disciplines or even just watching on TV realize how massive these fences are. I got chills seeing Icarus and Michael Pollard. So sad about Icarus :(
The amazing moment when you realize that you've interviewed Philip Dutton, Boyd Martin, and William Fox-Pitt. WHEN YOU WERE TWELVE. I talked to famous people.
Never give up on your goal! My dream is to become a professional showjumper someday, and I've only ever jumped a 3'3" single jump (not even a course that high) and currently only jumping a 2'3" single jump with my new horse, but I'm determined to achieve my dream someday. Best of luck to you :).
These horses are so amazing!! I would definately love to do show jumping or cross-country in the future. But still, the thrill of galloping towards a solid wall is something I have yet to experience!
Everyone says they just sit there...sure okay you just "sit" in squat position for the entire time this course takes not to mention the up and down "crunches" your getting from the jumps and basically the arm bar hang you get from working the horse steering and slowing down.
Looove! I'm so excited to go this year!! Do you know where to find information on who's riding in it? I haven't found much on thier website. And also, what camera did you use? :) I'm excited to get some amazing footage!! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the great video and for sharing it with us ........I had the pleasure of attending Rolex 12 times ! But could not make it this year - so your video was the best ! Do you know what happend to Becky Holder and "Can't Fire Me" ? I noticed on your video that there was blood on his front right leg.......Thanks again for the great video - it was so appreciated here in Seattle!
oh yup, i was wondering when i rewatched that part , my horse got a small cut from rushing off a float so yea i thought of it being that but was making sure it wasnt anything worse.
A fair amount of eventing horses are indeed thoroughbreds, but they're competing at a much older age- a lot of these horses are 9, 10, 11 + years old. Their bones have had more of a chance to develop and subsequently are less susceptible to breaking, unlike racehorses who are being asked to produce a similar kind of speed (without the jumping, at least in the US) at a much younger age (2 and 3 years old most often).
Derp Ington Yes very. You can see it on the horses faces. These jumps are huge and it does a lot of damage to their legs especially landing. All of these people were using whips and spurs. They probably had big bits which hurt as well. No part of this is kind to the horses.
Not always, depends on the rider. A lot of these horse love to jump. I know a horse who would die to do these courses, he loves cross country and will do it without a rider
Derp Ington In reality, there is good and bad in all sports. All equestrian sports, at all levels, have the potential to be dangerous and indeed painful. If done correctly there is little pain felt by the horses, well no more than any top level athlete feels. Again like any sport, if done incorrectly there is a huge potential for injury and thus, pain. The bigger concern is the 'behind the scenes' pain. The vast majority of riders and trainers do the right thing and manage their horses correctly, but there is always exceptions - yes, even at elite level. Some of these riders, including a couple in the footage above, are absolute bastards to their horses and their staff. As for whips and spurs, (I am replying to replies also) I am not a fan, I personally don't use them, but if used correctly, they also have their place. As for when people say "horses love to jump", your age and lack of experience betrays you. No horse loves to jump. Given the opportunity any horse would rather be running with a herd in a field somewhere. Horses jump because that is what they have been been trained and conditioned to do. That is their job. If you replace "love to jump" with 'willing to jump when asked' you would be far closer to the truth of it. Lastly, yes horses do die doing this - so do riders. There is a risk to both.
Okay Lia I know these are old comments but you need to chill with acting like you know everything about horses. I have jumped for 5+ years and jumping DOES affect horses. I promise you. I went to school for two years to figure horses out and you are stupid for trying to say it's not. Maybe if you had some facts to back it up you wouldn't have looked that stupid but you don't. If a horse is doing cross country for 5 years a year is cut of 1 year their life. Just like barrel racing. Just like all of the sports that we make horses do. The only thing that doesn't affect a horse in any way is trail riding. Please read up on your facts before you go screaming at people on the internet...
i agree. i believe any horse with blood on it constitutes an injury and should be disqualified from competing further and the injury attended to by a vet.
To the people saying the horses don't like jumping etc, my horse loves to jump, I retired him three years ago at 17 because we were worried an old injury would act up from when he got into a driving accident (before I bought him he pulled wagons in parades). Exactly! I've seen a horse who's rider fell of in a hunter event and he continued to run and jump the jumps for at least 2 minutes just for fun,
Shelby B lmao a barrel racing horse at my farm who has never jumped in his entire life jumped the 4”6 fence that surrounds his paddock for no reason. He could have ran away because no one was there but nope he just grazed for a while until someone discovered him.
literally no one wants 2 hear ur opinion
@@user-fy7fi8iv9k nobody asked to hear yours, that was rude, maybe u don't agree with her but don't be rude
Shelby B And this makes every single horse in world love jumping up to 10 feet? Interesting
I think the riders (most of them) are really good. BUT THE HORSES! There amazing! So quick and fast thinking!
Nina Eriksson, I agree. One slid on a jump and landed very well!
I KNOW!
It's grease! It's to help them glide over the jumps if they hit them!
I thought it was sweat, too!
Yes, I always wondered what that was and thank you!
The barking dogs while the horses are eventing p*** me off, & I realize most of the horses don't give a damn it's just me lol. ;)
9:54 that horse is absolutely gorgeous❤️
It's so satisfying watching these videos and determining what the contestants do well and on which points they could improve themselves. I learn a lot of it!

it doesnt hurt them

I love going to this event every year. Its not the same to watch it on video, so much better when you're there!
Thankyou for posting all these eventing videos. Its nice to know what occurred when you couldn't be there in person!
Your video was amazing. Brilliant filming and top class efforts from all horses and riders. Hats off to them for doing an amazing sport.

So did high society and UN
Special grease used in XC to help them slide over any fences they may catch. It massively reduces injury if they do knock/get caught on any fences.

It's the same as Marathon Runners, or sprinters, or any athletes getting tired. They get tired, but they know it's their job, and they enjoy it.
I could live without the whoopin n hollerin at the jumps really annoying
Quite a few are Throughbreds (the lankier looking ones), but many are Irish Sport Horses and Warmbloods.
That first grey was awesome!
Wonderful montage! Clear filming and exciting footage. keep it up!! :D
they do. they warm up in the arena next to the eventing course :)

from my heart, I will do this event some day
for all of us who couldn't be there... what a ride
Oops the white stuff make it easier for the horse to slid over the jump if they get in a tricky spot. It's sort of like grease. (:

what is the white paint on the horse's legs some times like 2:01
@Futureshowjumper: I feel the same way! I only just started jumping 2'9" but I have to quit jumping for a while to concentrate on western.
I can't even jump yet but my goal is to one day compete in the Rolex 3 day event!
Are Doug and Holly Payne related to Liam? From 1D?
Looks like it, its probs just a small cut but getting a very good blood supply as the horse is working so hard
it's a grease that allows the horses to slide easily if they rub a jump...
What happened to Can't Fire Me's leg? It looked like it was bleeding.
Can I use this video?
I want to do this with my 15.3 1/4 draft in the future. Would that be possible??

beautiful looks way fun
it is fun but it's rly dangerous for both you and the horse. you have to be a good rider with an experienced horse
I love this but what's with the floppy rains and pulling mouths?
iloveted t they pull the reins to slow the horse down when jumping you need to pace your horse
