It reveals their passion and courage and shows their great successes and some of their most horrible falls. Includes the absolutely top equestrians competing and reveals what they have to say behind the scenes. Actively used by Equestrians at all levels. Stars include William Steinkraus - President USET, 68 Gold Medalist, Katie Monahan, Louis Jacobs, Barney Ward, Armand Leone, Joe Fargis, Peter Leone, Michael Matz, Mark Laskin, Melanie Smith and many others.
Thank you for your comment. You are correct and the documentary was made by me.

Not just the toughest sport, the toughest athletes, both horse and rider.
oh my gosh!! i'm so glad to see how this sport has advanced! this is ridiculous. horses and riders now are so much more disiplined and safer! wow. kudos to these people for being brave enough to even attempt this lol
What exactly are you saying !? That the courses are much easier now !??
Thank you for your response. I am pleased to hear that Grey goose was properly honored. What a great beast. A hero really.

the jump with the ditch in front of it and had the white fence into the water would most defiantly not be aloud now haha
Wonderful video! Loved seeing so many of the greats! As a side note (which you may well already know) the thumb nail intro photo is Katie Ruppel on her Sir Donovan at the 2013 Rolex Kentucky CCI 4 Star in which she placed 15th, a photo taken by Tara Katherine and one of my favorites of he & Katie.
I remember watching this as a young kid, I met Katie Monahan, and Melanie Smith a few times at competitions, got autographs, spoke because they remembered me. The last was the Mercedes show jumping trials at Valley Forge for the USET Olympic Team. It was an amazing time for me, as this was a goal of mine back then, and I almost had it.
This is footage from a documentary called "Riding For America". The documentary covers all 3 USET sports, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping. This is just part of the Eventing portion of the film. Eventing has changed very much from this old "classic format" program, now there is only 1 phase on endurance day and that is the old phase D, Cross country, which has gotten harder. Many rules have changed such as you may not continue on after a fall. Great to see these old school riders again!
Those Crosscountry courses back then wer just INSANE! That had my hairs on end!
wow, watching videos like this reminds me...you almost forget that there was a day you could get back on and finish after a fall.
The Gray Goose and Kim always show they were different an amazing.. well said Kim on your talk about fear. you two were and are awesome
this IS the toughest sport! i love how the horses always look so antsy to get out, like "i really want to do this!" :)
Thanks Cleetus. The crucible of eventing. First time I heard that clip from Mike Plumb. What a find! Thank you for the love and miss you so.😢
I've never before heard eventing refered to in the language of alchemy. Mike Plumbing more confessions. No way TH-cam algorithm could conjure this. Has to be YOU. You have an excellent hacker/researcher. But how can you 10:20 read my heart and soul and the Dream of my oh please be HERE and not there.❤😢 I'm in bed right now and I miss you.
"If you go out there with that fear, then your probably riding for a fall" my all time favorite horse quote. This is just amazing. I miss the good old days when riders had to actually think. :(
blackcatenthusiast what do you mean think?
You believe that riders aren’t thinking these days? Have you seen a modern 5 star?
You know it kinda reminds me of what hockey was in the 70s too when players didn't wear helmets. I guess every sport has tended to smarten up about safety.
10:57 is BRUTAL
This is the original long form of cross country. They don't use this anymore.
No. In the original, original eventing they didn't get to see the course beforehand
@@linelindholm7332 that's not true they did but yes the course was very much shorter
@@shinierykoyuki5888 it is old eventers I know that have told me that they didn't get to see the course beforehand
@@linelindholm7332 sure...
9:30 Holy shit how bizarre to see that ride casually remount and continue.
Yes, that surprised me too… I thought a fall always meant elimination. (?)
Grey Goose was magnificent, wasn't he?
The last one is a rotational fall and it's deadly
It was also 98% her fault
@@wum8880 every fall is the riders fault. no excuse but it happens to everyone
@@lexierose1358 Nah horses can make mistakes too🤷♂️
@@wum8880 no shit sherlock, but 99% of the time it’s the riders fault
wow the difference in quality of training of the horses from then to now is amazing!!!
This is a great video. Kim Walnes and The Grey Goose are incredible. Its great to see them in action (grey horse, rider wears orange and black), they won Rolex in 1982. The Grey Gooses ashes are burried near the Head Of The Lake at the horse park.
I have so much respect for riders in this sport, the people and the horses themselves are just amazing!
also lots of respect for this guy here 02:46 it always agravates me when I see riders dismount and just leave everything to attendants and grooms
Back then, horrible accidents and even deaths weren't uncommon. Thank God the competition has changed.
BRUTAL water combo! Pure guts
I just feel the pain and fear just watching this
At about 3.20, competitor No. 4 says some thought-provoking stuff. Thanks. Subbed
Chap at 3.20 is truely authentic sounding.
it's inspirational to young eventers like me to see this.
I'm the person that when the horse falls on me while I'm riding him, but if I break my leg the first thing I would ask would be is if the horse was okay. I don't care about my injuries, I care about my horse!!!
+freeridexx then don't put your horse at risk for injuries???
Robotssss Sometimes it's not either you, or the horses fault that one of you gets injured, just a matter of being in the wrong place and the wrong time.
1. never the horses fault
2. i was talking about the fact that you are forcing these horses to gallop over jumps- many of which are solid and don't give should the horse trip fall increasing the risk of injury
3. all with metal in their mouths- which are closed with figure eights so they cant try to avoid the bit, spurs in their sides and crops in hand
4. you're putting your horse at risk for nothing other than your own entertainment
Yeah I am the same, I am doing 1* eventing right now and a year ago my horse had a fall on a jump on the XC course and he nearly broke a leg, luckily he is leg was fixed and we are back in events now!!
+Robotssss Some horses geniunley love competing and enjoy their job. and hackamores and bitless bridles can sometimes be ore harsh on a horse.
Btw...in the end of this video he said that she's ok and ride again. ;o
cool video. scary fall at the end.
Yes! Very well! Back before the days of riders riding 4 and 5 or more horses in one competition!!!
too scared to do this kind of stuff. im sticking with dressage! x'D
Oh how I miss the long format three-days!
Gotta say- i GREATLY commend these riders back in the day for just HOW INSANELY WELL they STUCK IT OUT with their horses & manage to not only STAY ON, and keep their horse from completely falling on its face, PLUS they still pull off getting OVER the fences... man they were BALLSY but some seriousy skilled riders very in tune with their horses too!!
@RedAlert2303 I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is nothing ,like the feeling you get when you acomplish something with your horse!!! I think that those who don't ride are missing out on something that is too big to explain!
Eventing is superior ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Old time Rolex is absolutely fascinating😍
THe "Good old days:" some of the greats, Jimmy. Mike. Torrance, and Karen Stives and Kim!
This is from the 90s though, eventing was a lot more brutal back then.
i agree 100% with you.
9:06 Poor horse! :S
Isn't this part of Riding for America? Or are there some differences?
@lucyinthesky80 Yes... because a 125 pound human can defiantly muscle a 1200 pound horse over a jump. These horses ADORE what they do and hate whenever they have to take time off they literally go insane. My horse has been off competition training for seven months and he's becoming a monster by kicking fences and randomly sprinting around his field because he's bored and wants a job. These horses love what they do or they wouldn't do it.
This ws "the good old days" when I was doingit ; and had yet to be injured; that would happen later!
@Fantageous @Fantageous visit my website at thehoffmancollection
thank you
david hoffman
@RedAlert2303 I agree!!!!!!!!! There is noting like the feeling you get when you acomplish something with someone else. I think that all those who dont ride are missing out on something too big to explain!!! :)
Hah. I remember being a kid thinking I could do this. I chose western pleasure instead!
wow. eventing used to be a hell of a lot harder
notto forget classic Ralph!
this all ways makes me think this is for sure the haredest
how old is this? the saddles are cracking me up :P
This is at least more then 25 yrs old.
What's wrong with the saddles? xD
please can someone date this video for me? if it was in preparation for the Olympics (as stated), which ones please? i'm guessing it was 1984, when the U.S. team won Gold.
thankyou for any replies.
cool video i just feel bad for the horses sometimes cuz they run so hard and jump so much for so long X( oh well XD
this is so strange... this is the Rolex? so different
@TheArmadillo17
and yet it's so much fun :)
6 miles of roads and tracks? pfft i guess this beats racing in one way o_o
i think its one of the hardest but....i still think horse racing is harder
OMG Young JIMMY! Spirit...hummmm
What on earth are you talking about? We know more about horse management now than we ever have!
@elizabethsbiggestfan not all horses.... my horse is definatly a free thinker! lol
You can hear how tired the horses are, and see how some can't make the jump. Why put your beloved horse through this. ? 9 miles of running and jumping, its horrible.
Its completely different now days
I don't see the fun in this level of eventing. Why would anyone want to see how hard they can push their horse and themselves for sport? I can see people that have a death wish doing this stuff by why take your horse with you?
well by your logic, you could say that about ANY sport at the olympic level. And just FYI, these horses love it just as much as their riders. You couldnt convince a horse to do this unless they absolutely loved it. Horseback riding is a dangerous sport in general, and you clearly dont event, so I wouldn't expect you to understand this.
How do you know the horses love it? Can you read a horse's mind?
Bill Baehr If the horses did not love it, they wouldn't be doing it. This is a very dangerous sport, as you can obviously see - and the Riders go through a plethora of horses to find the one who has the pop, spark, enthusiasm and passion for the sport as the rider does. To compete with a horse who does not share the same passion, you both can get severely hurt. These horses you see at the top levels, made it through many tests by the riders to ensure that they are the right choice.
If the horses loved "it" they would be doing stuff like this on their own. When was the last time you saw a horse jumping an event course without a rider forcing it to go on? Horses love it? You are so full of shit.
Bill Baehr if you don't event - you have no business stuffing your ignorant opinions into the matter. If you don't ride it, experience it, training it - then your opinions are ignorant :) You have no idea what goes on in the search of that perfect partner, you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes in preparation, you have no clue - so therefore, you are ignorant on the matter :)
@19580121s But now you have horses that don't think. They dont' have to. It's all programed in, and the rider can just push the buttons and say go. Back when you did the ABCD, it wasn't as so.
Omg they’re not even wearing body protectors🧐
;O Oh no!! :(
Horrible. I love cross country (these days) but that was just brutal.
7:02 :( Is she/he ok? , 8:39 ouch!
10:54 OMG! Is she ok?? :S
ihahah it made me laugh so hard
9:19 'when the horse makes a mistake' the horse never! makes a mistake, its always the rider whos fault it is!
that's ridicules. horses make mistakes all the time. it's part of being a living, thinking creature.
true... but, riding mistakes are almost always caused by the rider (for disturbing the horse his movements)
+emali111 It's always caused by the rider though if the rider falls
thats rubbish- when my horse tripped over his own feet and fell on top of me that was completely his fault. I've made plenty of mistakes and most of the time my horse bails me out (for which I am very grateful to him) but he screws up as well and I do my best to help him but shit happens and everyone makes mistakes.
emali111 You would have done something to cause it, even if it was tipping slightly
I wish humans were nicer to animals
Haha x)
Terrible and it still is
So stupid, so cruel, should be outlawed. This is all for the ego of the rider. Its not health of the horse.
