  • Last summer, Jesse and I road tripped up to NW Arizona to join Aaron Chambers, Rachel Glynn, and Jeremy Vandenberg. She was doing DNA work on this disjunct population of the species to determine whether they were actually Amblycheila schwarzi or should be (re-)split off to a former species designation.
It was a pleasure to be involved and contribute to the scientific understanding of this species simply through doing what we love most. Walking around and looking for bugs! And I always have a lot of laughs hanging out with Jesse and Aaron, and not just when we frequently end up in a hotel when Aaron thinks we're camping with him. Sorry, Aaron. It was a surprise to us too! A few minutes of driving for a bed and a shower is a small quality of adventure improvement, even if it is last minute notice! ;)
Years prior, I had attempted to find this species with my friend Travis from NV, but we came up empty-handed.
The backstory on this trip is even more interesting but like so much of the trips we take, we'll leave that for another time.

    That scorpion, that centipede
Holy Moly! I would totally geek out watching that scenario way up close for a long time. Sooo fascinating.
Thanks for the sheets and giggles as well! What glorious lives you all have. Thank you for sharing.

Unfortunately I didn't get to watch it for very long. I've had to spend A LOT of time outdoors to get to witness something like that. I suppose the only other place you can see such a thing is youtube, but most of those vids are probably intentional introductions. I have wondered if my moving the rock off them put them near each other but it sort of looked like the centipede wasn't writhing like it normally would if it were "just" caught. Or perhaps it was stung, thouigh I'd be kind of surprised if the scorpion venom immobilized them to that degree. It didn't look like the scorpion had been feeding on it for very long because the centipede was pretty fully intact.

@Bugs In Cyberspace yep yep! I wouldn't put them together, but a rare find in the wild indeed. I am very intrigued by the way the scorpions eat with their tiny extendable mouth claws. Like Alien...

@@tanakeilidh384 I've taken some video close ups of it over the years. Everything looks so different close up like that and, agreed! Those little mouthparts are totally alien!

Me and a good friend from college recently went on a 5 day trip up to the panhandle of Oklahoma and then went to a few spots in New Mexico. The Black Mesa area was absolutely loaded with some cool invertebrates, mostly grasshoppers and this year there was a LOT. First time i got to see a Plains Lubber. We didnt look too hard for inverts as that wasnt why we went to begin with, really regreting that ngl. Id love to be where y'all are at. It looks awesome and it looked like yall had fun

I had three adults living in a terrarium in my bathroom for over half a year in 2021. Great insects, lots of character. Was this later in the summer? I thought Rachel didn't have any luck with those eastern schwarzi during her spring field efforts.
