  • Hi everybody! Today we're breaking down why you should be doing pilates and the health benefits of pilates exercise. Now I'm not a pilates professional, so I brought on two of my colleagues to help break it down. They also led me in mat, reformer, and chair sessions that absolutely kicked my booty. Let me know down in the comments if you have any questions about pilates!

I take group Reformer classes six days a week for six months. What has changed? Lost 45 pounds, body fat percentage down 10 points, muscle percentage up 6 points, and even more importantly resting heart rate down 10 bpm, blood pressure down, and I can finally do a push up from my toes. Pilates is amazing. I love it.

My daughter introduced me to Pilates when I was 44 because I had 15 pounds I just couldn’t shed and was thinking about a tummy tuck. I had been trying to lose that weight for a few years and within six months I dropped more than 20 pounds and went back to my beautiful maintenance weight. It’s amazing! I then started incorporating yoga and I enjoy both. I’ll be doing it for the rest of my life.

Hahaha I remember shifting to pilates because I find other workouts to be chaotic in some way. And then I realized I prefer this exercise. What I learned is that controoool is soooo hard. But once you get it right, you can feel the change in your body, from the posture, your balance, and it also makes you feel stronger in a sense and you can feel that your whole body is attuned and aligned.

This is so interesting and definitely something that would be beneficial for me. I'm one of those people who were brainwashed into thinking fast and high impact is the "best" workout and if I wasn't sweating I was doing something wrong. I've begun to trust the process more (following Sydney Cummings' programme) and not looking at how much calories I burned on my Fitbit.

I love this perspective. I've taken classes on a reformer and on a mat in NYC for about a 2 year period. I found that I needed more, fitness-wise, but found that pilates was an amazing companion workout, if that makes sense. And it is NOT easy! The attention to small movements and control have helped me build a strong core ( pun intended) for my other workouts. I will say, though, I sometimes wish the messaging around modern pilates was sometimes better ( long! lean! slim!, sleek!, for example)...and it is often so expensive ( reformer classes), not very diverse and can feel intimating. Of course, this is just MY opinion/experience going to many studios over the years- in NYC, Boston and LA. I know this is not everyone's experience!

Justina, nice video. I agree with the your values and concepts mentioned here! I use a similar structure when I coach my students their 600- hour Comprehensive Pilates Certification to become certified Pilates teachers and run their own businesses. The formula I teach creates transformations over and over again. My clients come to be because they have had enough of overwhelm, not happy working for someone else, not managing to get by and living paycheck to paycheck. I offer them the possibility to gain a new skill in helping others, which not only gives them personal satisfaction but offers them a very healthy and profitable lifestyle. I'm loving what I do and I thank all my teachers for the skills I can pass on to these people! Sending you love and light!!!

I am new to Pilates, I started doing Flow with Mira videos here on TH-cam after I realized that Blogilates (aka Cassey Ho) isn’t technically Pilates at all. I like her intensity, but prefer the attention to form that more traditional instructors provide.
I was a runner for ten years, and gradually got worn down by injuries. The mat workouts I’ve been doing this year completely resolved separate knee and hip issues that had made it impossible to run. I’m back to running again, but only two times a week- I just really love my mat workouts, and find enjoyment in the variety of movements Pilates let’s you choose from.
I know everyone likes to say that Pilates doesn’t burn calories, but without meaning to, I lost six pounds doing pilates alone this year. I don’t exercise for weight loss, but I get very annoyed with people who are overly negative about the benefits of Pilates. Everyone should try it and see how their own bodies react to the exercises.
Since I am so new, though, I do wonder about Reformer Pilates. I definitely cannot afford to take a class right now (one commenter here already brought up the expense involved), so I rely heavily on videos and good instructors here on TH-cam. As I continue to progress, can I expect to gain strength doing mat exercises only, or does the reformer/chair/etc really become essential to the practice at a certain point?

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

First of all, thanks so much for sharing your experience! In terms of your question, you can absolutely get stronger from mat only pilates. You'll just need to continue advancing your practice over time. Also remember that gaining strength does not always mean gaining muscle. To gain muscle you would absolutely need to add resistance over time. Hope that helps!

I’m a month into pilates and I love it. I’m not a naturally skinny person or anything. And I’m not in great shape. I love it because I leave there feeling like I got a good workout with being able to walk the next day. I was lifting weights before and always so sore the next day. Pilates has given me some strength. It’s not very cardio intensive so you may need to add in walking to really see results. But so far I love my pilates routine. I go to Club Pilates (that’s just what I have near me) and pay $229/month for unlimited. For as much as I go, it’s about $10 per class.

Thanks for the deep dive, it was really interesting. I like Pilates, but the ab work on the floor always tweaks my lower back, so I don’t do the workouts. However, the workouts I do usually incorporate some Pilates moves, so I get some benefit. I have tried to improve my form, but no luck, it might be due to my scoliosis. Anyway, I sub with standing ab moves and weighted carries, and I feel my functional strength is good. One of these days I’d like to take a class using the reformer, it looked pretty awesome! And I’m sure they’d have some form pointers I’d need.

I love this series! Since getting breakthrough COVID in November 2021 I have not been able to do my usual strength and cardio (Sydney) videos due to ongoing chest pain and breathing issues. Huge bummer, but pilates seems to be okay on my lungs... I'm staying active this way until my body heals. Good to know this is good for me in other ways as well!

I first got into fitness because of Pilates (and Yoga), mainly cause I didnt have any equipment at home and my dance teachers incorporate them during Strength & Conditioning. I've only ever tried Mat Pilates cause it's the most accessible. I really want to try Reformer but unfortunately, the pandemic still exists and a Pilates class here is expensive :(

I’m more of a strength training gal but I’m always adding other types of exercise on top or insert them in my weekly plan bc each type has different benefits and all are important for a comprehensive training. Since I’ horribly misaligned + lack core strength, I’ll add more pilates.

It was so awesome to see Margaret Elizabeth she is so sweet and down to earth. I just got custom made arch supports for my flat feet that a tray fell on my flat feet where I worked for 5 months and found I have terrible Arthritis in my big toe as well as the Arthritic knee for years and had started a program from a You Tube Trainer the beginning of May and told a good friend of mine I didn't want to do cardio my arch support on the right side is customized different making lunges etc feel weird and saw Margaret's 50 minute reformer would love to try the reformer but had to be creative and use my weights aerobic step and resistance band and I laughed when you said the magic circle is torture device another reason I wanted to do it because I invested in this torture device and wasn't using it and I love not wearing shoes I am looking forward to Margaret breaking down the reformer moves Wednesday and Thursday.

I've seen this gym/exercise advertised everywhere around me (metroplex), but being from a small town - had no idea what it was (didn't even know what yoga was until moving to the metroplex). This was so very informative! I honestly thought it was another fad (jazzercise anyone?) but it's seriously been around since 1900? I mean what?! I'll be looking into this morning as a possible exercise as I'm getting older and the low impact is intriguing. (and i hate weight lifting). Thank you for the experts, the history, and the sneak peak that wasn't a ad to join the gym.

I am a big believer of slow, control, breathing, and mind-muscle connection movements. Because my goal is not size but strength, mobility, stability, flexibility... (and other -ability😂). Because of my classical dancer background, i was introduced to pilates in the 90s (before it became popular) to build strength as a dancer. And because of the knowledge and practise (yes, esp the Core!) of pilates, it helped me get through life (pregnancy stage, post pregnancy, mum stage ) stronger than most mums (yes, i m proud of that!). So, pilates is a definately highly recommended.

I am 18 months postpartum with my second but feel stronger than I have in a long time. I’m also a yoga teacher and I have to say I’m really surprised at how much Pilates has helped my yoga practice since I’m much stronger now. If anyone is curious about Pilates I would recommend you give it a try but to be fair stick with it for a few months so you can really see the change. 💪🏻

What would be a good way to incorporate pilates into a workout routine that has 3-4 days a week of total body strength training? I see pilates mentioned a lot as a good active rest day workout, but I'm always concerned about overdoing it since I don't do a lower/upper split and pilates seems to work the full body as well.
