      @@grimreapers One variable you neglected to factor was the relatively poor infrared tracking of the sidewinders at the time. I don't think they could lock-on to non-jets back in 1980.
      Also, the Pheonix is very slow and needs altitude advantage. The Ju-88 had dive bombing capability and was fairly maneuverable, if they had forewarning...

    But the missiles looked epic in the night with the trails, much better than daytime where we on TH-cam can't see them much due to compression.

    The electronic battle was a constant one with the advantage periodically switching, so you can't really criticise the failure too harshly. There is also the fact that the British knew from communications intercepts that Coventry was the target, but they did not want to risk exposing their ability to decode messages and consequently wanted to give the impression that they were caught by surprise.

    In the spirit of this video, I'm not sure if you have done this scenario yet, but how about defending Dresden Germany (four Allied raids between 13 and 15 February 1945)??
    722 Heavy Bombers from the RAF and 527 Heavy Bombers from the USAAF. Sidenote: I met an older woman when I was young, who survived this bombing campaign. She fled with her family after 2 days of intense bombing into the countryside. The family was walking along a dirt road, with civilian vehicles around them, when a pair of P47s mistook the collection of people for German Military personnel..... they got strafed and barely got out alive. She recalled the events clear as day when telling the story. Dresden was absolutely leveled.

  • @anthony7697
    @anthony7697 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There's actually a very simple explanation if you understand the tech why they likely turned off. The combat formations they fly are designed to defend against fighters and not be overly stacked vs AA of the day especially flak - usually 3-5 inch guns, with some 6 and the occasional 8 inch guns. Missiles are essentially rocket flak (detonate close and shrapnel rips it apart if no direct hit) - and if you guys are firing Aim-54's - the explosive warhead on those is close to those of an Iowa class's 16 inch 'HE' shell. Odds are that firing those in to the formation, they were hit with fragmentation, and seemed fine up until they reached those points and realized they were losing fuel, hydraulics, etc. Your basically launching flak rounds 7 times bigger/more powerful than what they are used to from the wrong way. To say nothing of the stupid rounds a minute a tomcat fires so they could have also been hit by stray rounds.
    Happened plenty in real life a plane was fine till it's not. Happens in Warthunder too where plane takes damage and it's fine and flyable for a time till you run out of water or oil and the engine loses all power, or the controls finally freeze completely.

    • @thudthud5423
      @thudthud5423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If an AIM-54 sees an entire formation of Junkers as a single target, wouldn't its guidance aim for the "target's" center of mass and therefore unleash the most fragmentation damage. I'd think firing a single Phoenix per minute would allow each successive missile to target the new center of mass resulting from the hole the previous Phoenix left in the formation.

    • @anthony7697
      @anthony7697 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thudthud5423 Well - the question is how accurate does DCS replicate how the AIM-54 works and functions. They may not have been far enough for it to do it's usual flight path to go up to higher altitudes for best range, however - it only relies on the Tomcats Radar to a certain point (which is the one it shows as a singular blob) and at 9 - 2 nautical miles from target activates it's own radar for guidance - which being that much closer and all may better define the individual aircraft and smaller groups with it's active homing radar in the terminal phase. At which point other than than the friendly fire incident - firing off all 6 or several of them makes just as much sense as they will find their targets from there, spreading them out slightly so they each go after a flight.
      Which does make me wonder how the jets that use the 120 would fare given it's got half the blast but much newer and depending on model of plane perhaps some better radar to discern elements of the group better.

    Seen several of your vids of this type of mission run and I have to agree with a comment below about not shooting missiles until after regrouping behind the Coventry bombing force.
    It seems at least one of your flight always gets taken down by a flyer further behind when they cut loose. Getting behind the Coventry raid, then one by one sending fighters forward to ripple off all their missiles before breaking off clear to allow the next to come up would seem a far more effective strategy, and might even result in the elimination of the entire bomber group or have what few survivors are left peeling off and abandoning the raid.

    1:24 - To be fair on our side in the battle of the beams, it wasn't a question of "failing to disrupt" the X Gerät, as only way of disrupting the *beams* in questions was to bomb at least one of the pair of transmitters. What the British tried to do was disrupt their *effect* , by misleading the German navigators who relied on each beam having Morse code dots on its left side & Morse code dashes on its right side, so that the navigator could tell which side he was on: the method of misleading was to transmit conflicting dots & dashes. On this occasion, that clearly failed, despite the fact that the beams were detected far enough in advance of the raid to allow 8 bombers to be sent to bomb the relevant German bomber airfields, & also to put up continuous CAPs over Coventry itself [according to my source, which clearly conflicts with Cap's].
    My dad's maternal family lived in Coventry, & his mother & aunt worked in the Rudge cycle factory there. After this raid, his cobbler grandad moved to Wolverhampton to live with dad's parents, where he felt safer.

    Interesting that you're having trouble with the Ju88 too! I've been building an almost identical scenario in Mission Editor. I was forced to delete some of the bombers because they're so poorly optimized. Especially for VR. You'll be running 40-50fps, and then you look towards the formation and you drop to 12-15fps. The same doesn't seem to happen with similar sized formations of other aircraft. The issue is, we're not given any other German WW2 bombers to play with! I'm guessing that the LOD models are not optimized well. As far as I can tell, they use one very very low vertex model for cameras beyond 5nm away, then it switches to the full definition model when you're close enough to make out the shape of an airframe... truly hopeless. I hope that ED addresses this soon, or gives us some other AI-only bombers to play with..

    Considering the Luftwaffe attacked over several hours in waves and you wouldn't have faced all 500 at once, I'd say this mission was a resounding success. Of course, I am sure there will be many who will wonder if an American Carrier Strike Group in the channel could have defeated Operation Moonlight Sonata.

    My only complaint is how ineffective British AA is compared to that of the Germans.
    The boys did great considering the game limitations. Damp was exceptional, In fact he seems to be upping his skill level consistently. Tanky was a bit of a legend with his "Sparra's" too.

  • @Dennys854
    @Dennys854 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that after the first round of "Comets" the Germans saw decimated them, some might have fled in sheer terror just from that. I agree on the shrapnel forcing some that made it to turn off at the IP. However the extent of this victory is in the loss of pilots.. that ratio is devastating.

      AC-130s in an air-air mission? Hmm. I'm not sure that would work to well. They'd have to fly perpendicular to target moving enemy planes.

    Just going by the numbers. 25 optimum load F-14's, 6 Phoenix with 2 Sparrows or 4 Phoenix and 4 Sparrows for the radar capacity, no Sidewinders a IR lock would be iffy, You would ONLY get 200 of your 500 raid by missile. Then going guns perhaps another 10 per F-14 if you are lucky giving you another 250. 50 attackers would be missed.
    Proper single, spaced out gun runs by the F-14 would eliminate friendly fire. No gun runs until after all missiles are fired, and only fire missiles from trailing planes once the lead plane is out of the way.
    Gunnery from the German planes would be useless for them as the defense is at night and they cannot see a plane moving at 500 knots.
    The psychological effects of 200 planes just blowing the hell up would have caused the whole attack to be called off.

    • @blackpowder13

      You can't load any AIM-7s if you have 6 AIM 54s loaded, You can only carry 2 Sparrows if loaded with 4 Buffalos...
