Jonah Hill in Moneyball wouldve been a good shout. That movie changed the general public’s perception of him as someone capable of handling serious, leading roles.
Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is also a pretty famous one. It probably doesn’t fit the mold of “against type casting” since he stayed mostly the same, but at the time, it was a huge deal given the common understanding of Lex Luthor.

Albert Brooks in Drive, is one of the greatest villains in movie history. Perfection.

Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Not sure if it falls more so under the umbrella of stunt casting but it is incredibly memorable and far outside anything he's done in his career

People hate on Tom Cruise all because of his belief system, it’s ridiculous. The dude has put out, literally nothing but GREAT movies, for the last, like 25 years…
Also, everyone says he’s a legitimately awesome and nice guy, I have no issue saying Tom is awesome, so I agree 👏

Damon in Interstellar is a standout to me (more supporting than the roles mentioned here)

Stallone in Cop Land, Cruise in Collateral and Interview with the Vampire, Van Damme JCVD, Jackie Chan Crime Story etc.

My favorite description of Leslie Nelson is that he is a dramatic actor that is unaware he is playing in a comedy.

These are all great, and there are a million examples, but I think my favorite is Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe. Although I suppose he'd played a villain before in Texas Chainsaw 4 and Frailty, this was quite different. After a run of fairly laid back, passive and charming leading men, his turn as an sadistic and manipulative hitman was truly surprising, and he really did bring a menacing presence to every scene he was in. If anyone hasn't seen it, I think it's worth tracking down.

This movie is everything and then some "nobody" is a must see the action was crazy good and the humor was dark but appropriate 👍🏾👍🏾

I would say before Hanks did Ladykillers, I would go with Road to Perdition. I know he can pull of anything but never picturing him as a henchman for the mob.

Not even mentioning Jim Carrey in the Truman Show seems like a massive oversight.

No mention of Colin Firth in Kingsman? Not exactly playing against type. But the very opposite of an action star. Pretty much what makes somebody like Bob Odenkirk easy for the average movie goer to identify with. An average guy with unseen depths.

Nobody is a good movie. I saw it yesterday, it’s kinda like a funny John Wick. Good action, and all the actors do a great job

Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained is also a great shout. Considering his typical roles, Leo pulled off a racist villain surprisingly well. Just watch the "Turtleshell Tabletop" scene.

Odenkirk is not playing against type. He is a character actor and he always has been. Real Mr. Show fans have observed this. His commitment to his characters (silly or not) jumps off the screen.
