I specifically remember asking my best friend to help me identify what genre this song was when it first came out. We were both in middle school and just getting into music on any kind of a serious level, and neither one of us knew what to call it. It wasn't loud or energetic enough to be rock. It was too weird to be pop. It certainly wasn't country. It had too much acoustic instrumentation to be electronic. There was no rapping, so it wasn't hip-hop. We had to conclude that this song, despite sounding nothing like anything else we had been told was part of the genre, could only be labeled "alternative." About 10 years and half of my life as a musician and massive music fan later, and I still think that's the best label you can put on it. What a weird song.

@X 1le again in context but considering he is known by people in most countries of the world for 1 song then yeah he is a one hit wonder by their perspective
This song is my candidate for best pop single of the millennium, and it's because there's more than one thing that makes it an incredible record. Both vocal performances are superb. Kimbra does have that explosive power but they both convey so much emotion. The instrumentation is just perfection, the production is wonderful, the songwriting, structure and lyrics are all immense. It's just all around a masterpiece.
@@Nyxtia it's really interesting how almost everybody can agree on this song. I still hear it on a variety of radio stations, even ones that wouldn't dare to touch 2010s pop.
@@eziitis8 I like to rant about how degenerate pop is these days because I am genuinely that annoying guy. But most radio music sucks exactly because all those songwriting elements: musicality, tonality, structure, lyricism, raw vocals, etc. have been watered down into nothingness to appeal to the lowest common denominator. This song proves that there really is still a place for those things within the pop genre, and ironically even the people who do like radio pop will generally admit that this song is special, while most of the songs on the radio today will be forgotten by next week.
I just wanna congratulate middle8 on the editing, but especially the soundtrack! It's amazing with the little bits of instrumental parts, alternative versions of the song or isolated vocals. They all enhance the experience tenfold, compared to other videos. It's amazing to have such high quality content for free, I'm so proud of middle8!!

you are missing out. he has a lot of good songs in his catalog. if you like finding new music it's worth your time. he has many good videos for some of those songs as well with animation from a number of upstart studios. he is criminally underrated imho
I don't usually comment on this type of video, but I wanted to say of all the "about the artist" type videos out there, this is one of the best ones I have watched, especially the way the video side of it was put together. Not just random photos of the artist mixed into the voice over, but an actual video production for it. Nicely done. Going to check out more of your videos just becasue of that.
i think that's exactly the reason he quit doing Gotye. He doesn't want anything to do with the life of a popstar - he for sure isn't one. I listened to his records and I think this guy has some really free way of making music. He is an artist who happened to create a massive hit and I think he didnt fear the popularity but he doesn't want it. Because being popular always comes with a certain pressure and also people who try to tell you what to do with your art. Just look at Julian Casablancas who basically quit doing the strokes for 7 years to do music with a band that lets him be as free and creative as he wants to be - even if that means he only plays in front of like a few hundred people or so and not in big stadiums or arenas.
NoanProduction saw interviews that he wanted to release music last year . He isn’t gone he just doesn’t churn out music for the money. Will not be surprised if we see a new album in the next year or two . He clearly must be a perfectionist who heavily relies on creativity lightbulbs . He might be feeling creative for a while, make a few songs then leave it for year which is probably what’s happening. Hope he comes back soon
NoanProduction His success during making mirrors most likely isn’t the reason he quit. He’s said many times before that the amount of people listening to him doesn’t really matter. He doesn’t care if it’s millions or just a handful of people, he just cares about making music he enjoys making. Wally took time off after Making mirrors to fully focus on his band, The basics. And I think he’s just been taking his time while now having the money and freedom to do what he wants to. He has said quite a few times over the last few years that he’s making a new album, he’s just doing it slowly. :)
I would have laughed at this comment if o hadnt read it after finishing the video. It's so cool that he let's artists use the song for free for transformative content and that he settled in court for 50%. I really respect him
3:24 you really hit the nail on the head there.. It IS a beast of a beat. Who would think african drums and latin drums would flow so smoothly into each other that an ordinary listener would never notice they're there. I didnt at least and this part of the video really struck me.
@@antoniocerqueira304 Not exactly, the brazilian percussion patterns are unique, yes, they received influence from Africa but they are not the same. You can go to Africa right now and you'll not find anything similar to Samba, or argentinian Tango, and neither Salsa, the latin rhythms are unique. Moreover in Latin music some of the drum patterns people hear also come from the percussive patterns of native americans and europeans who also played drums and percussive instruments.
@aygeeawowede1337 more or less since so many West Africans were abudcted, shipped off to South America, and enslaved there. Edit: Feel like I should add "by Western Europeans" at the end just in case lol I guess everyone knows by now

Wait did he not mention that the nursery rhyme is actually just “Ba Ba Black Sheep” in a minor key? It doesn’t just sound like a nursery rhyme, it is one.
OP is right, rhythm is more like Ba Ba Black Sheep. The semi-quavers on the third beat. That’s the difference. Twinkle Twinkle *Lit - tle* Star Ba ba Black sheep *Have - you - an - ny* Wool Compare that to the rhythm in the song and you’ll see it’s ba ba black sheep.
I remember when it was up for Song Of The Year at the Grammys. Prince was presenting the award, and when he opened the envelope he exclaimed “Oh, I love this song!” That’s the highest compliment a songwriter could receive.
Prince you know ! Wow that would make me fee ethereal if that was me he’s a songwriting genius aswell as his own music Prince wrote “Nothing compares 2u ” by Sinead O Conner
Liked this song when I was in high school and really only identified with the males perspective. Hearing it again as adult and understanding what the woman was talking about chilled me.
Kimbra's vocals will always be one of the most beautiful features, theres so much emotion it feels personal and thats why i truly fell in love with this song
Everyone asks "I wonder what Gotye is doing right now" but no one ever cares where Kimbra ended up. It's unfortunate that she couldn't maintain the fame from the song now that she's making some of the most interesting music in pop.
The fact that it's a duet is crushing to me because there's always two or more sides to a story, the deep sigh he takes when Kimbra comes in on the music video.... uhg. Make's me remember all the shit stuff I've put people through too
She didnt 'ghost' him, they verbally broke up but Gotye wanted to stay friends but she refused, and when he built an attitude towards her refusal she mocked him, not ghosted but partially heartbroken, same difference anyways
Yeah, her part was awesome, and the success of the song helped her become more famous. Kimbra certainly is a unique and interesting artists and one of the most interesting musicians to come from NZ in recent years, way better than the overrated Lorde imho.
b r u h. Artists need to eat as well. Not all of them are privileged enough to be able to not monetize their work. While I understand that creating a piece of art with the sole purpose of making money is pathetic. Creating a piece of art that's good but also has the intention to make money isn't in any way bad and doesn't make the artist any less "real".
@@r.7530 , everyone understands that artists needs to eat and want to have a comfortable life, yet there are plenty of "artists" who release absolute shite knowing that their fans will eat it and they will be another million richer. Unfortunately, most performers who reach world fame end up in that category which is disgusting because they simply work for the money.
This song has really spoken to me on a personal level for the past 4 years. I once has a friend when I was in year 7 (Australia). We were strangers to each other but we shared some classes together. (Elective classes more specifically.) Over the next 5 or 6 months we became incredibly close where at one point we tested the waters on whether or not we could withstand us being together. It didn't end up working out for reasons that I will never know. We mutually talked after that and it was nice because we were still communicating as friends. Then at the beginning of 2018 she moved schools and she never told me. I was caught by surprise and I was a bit upset. I asked her to keep in contact with me and she agreed. She never responded to my messages. During the pandemic I tried to contact her through social media but I don't have her instagram and she removed my number and blocked my snapchat. I know this all started when I was around 13 but now that I'm 17 I can see clearly now. She truly was somebody that I used to know... ...and I won't forget her even if she's forgotten me
Man that's rough. She probably had gone through a lot of changes in her life and her ignoring your messages and blocking your snapchat clearly shows you weren't all that important to her. Rather than dwell on the fact she moved on and not have contact with you id just focus on the good parts the two of you had in the friendship and let the positive parts of that shape you into the person you are. Her not having you in her life was a choice she made and you shouldn't be wasting your energy on how she doesn't include you into her life. That's on her, not you. People grow apart and don't always remain the same person you used to know them as. You're still young and coming up in the world, you gotta focus on yourself and to go through your journey alone. And whoever you come across in your life wants to be in your life, they will. And if they also go on to find themselves then let them. Always focus on the positives each person brings into your life. Live your life and don't worry about theirs. Merry Christmas.
Boy i know someone say person A who loves this person B dearly. But God knows why she has blocked him like every now and then talking about him to us but on the other hand blocked him... Like idk
I can't say for certain, but it's possible I'd give it up too to avoid all the trouble. While 10,000,000 would be great, I'm also not that interested in money. I could probably get *_everything_* I want, at present, for 500,000 at most. After that, there'd be little left I'd want. I don't have the ambition to become famous, nor the ambition to have great things. Some things I've made have been redistributed without my knowledge, but I never really wanted money from them anyway. _However,_ my uncertainty comes from the fact I wouldn't even forgive someone for stealing food from me, never mind something from my career.
@@jacobriddoch7275 That's subjective. I think it's weird to care about superfluous things like being rich. What does a massive house actually do for you? What does a $1,000,000 car do for you? Nothing, really.
I was thinking if making this joke. Then I remembered the meme of "When you see the comment section is full of the same idea, don't type that idea" I didn't see this type of comment yet, so I scrolled down and here you are!!!
I'm really happy for him. creating an absolutely massive hit, that's also unique and universally enjoyable, then disappearing from the public radar, AND letting artists use said hit freely? That man is living the dream.
The rest of the album 'Making Mirrors' that this song was a part of was incredible. But sadly overlooked because this was such a mega hit. Kimbra's work since this has been nothing sort of incredible. 'The Golden Echo' is a modern masterpiece and was ahead of its time and her latest album 'A Reckoning' that has just been released absolutely slaps!
Everyone in the comments is talking about how much they wish he'd make another song and how they miss him and I'm like. Ya'll. He still makes music. He never stopped. You just stopped listening.
That whole album (Like Drawing Blood) is fantastic! I saw him a few times touring it (before Making Mirrors), and he did all the instrumentation using loop pedals by himself. Just slowly piecing a song together in real time. It was incredibly impressive.
Thank you for talking about Kimbra in this video. I've heard a lot of people discuss this song, but they always seem to refer to her as "the female vocalist" or just don't talk about her at all. So thank you for giving her credit where credit is definitely due.
I truly view this song as one of the greatest songs of the modern age. Sure he may have not stayed giant like this song, but he also created possibly the greatest song of the new millennium. What an insane accomplishment.
Although it’s a bit different compared to the others recommended, I also do like ‘State of the Art’! The music video is,,,, unique, to say the least, but I do really enjoy the song
In hindsight it's weird that Eyes Wide Open got released before Somebody I used to know. He's a really humble guy too. I remember one of his award acceptance speeches he actually apologised to everyone who had to listen to the song on the radio multiple times a day.
This is what a real artist is like. He didn’t got interested in any money, promotion or anything of profit at all. He just wanted to share this masterpiece to the world, and heck he did. It really became a true unique piece of art of itself, and became one of the most popular songs of the 2010s. And this song also hit a lot in the feels if you think about it. I would sometimes hear almost everyday on the radio in the morning this song on the school bus every mourning on the way to school back in 2012-2013. It got me since then like a sense of nostalgia, when i hear this song, not only I remember those times I would hear this song on the bus, but also those times when i was younger, and sometimes wish I could go to much simpler times. Such memories, thank you Gotye for making such nostalgic and powerful music! :)
I feel bad for him. Some fucker sued him 50% of all profits because of 3 seconds??? (not to mention there were his own tunes too in those same 3 seconds). I bet there are lots more songs out there that are "plagiarized" more and have gotten away scot free
great lyrics and singers can do that, sometimes one carries better than the other, look at nothing else matters by Metallica, almost every cover of that song that i've heard can give me this affect
Excellent breakdown. I love hearing the isolated tracks showing how the song was crafted. So many magical sounds blended together to create such a classic!
@@DiegoFraustro Yeah I admit I've been missing out on his music myself, but now I've been diving into Gotye's channel... he has much more really great music! I especially like the one with that electronic organ in the video (and in the thumbnail)...
I absolutely love that behind the scenes documentary. I'm glad you're sharing it more here. I tell people all the time about his use of sampling the musical fence and individually programming random instruments into a midi keyboard to essentially create a new instrument. So great.
I love that he doesn't give two shits about money but will be able to do whatever he wants to do musically/creatively. Freedom. He's a true artist and I love knowing that.
Art musicians (and I think that is a genre, people who are more artists than music makers) often produce great music because they are following their own path, not trying to follow a trend like the music labels want them to. Devo, David Bowie, Bjork, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and PM Dawn are good examples. Some art musicians produce mostly hard to access or appreciate music but then come out with some gems - but without that hard to access music we would never get the gems or the later music they inspire.
@@RogerCRocha See it's actually confusing to me that nobody knows that. It's just a rearranged version of a song by Sting (idr the name but it's pretty much this)
I enjoy the concept that both sides of the song are unreliable narrators with their own perspectives. The song just has a raw feel to it that stabs you in the heart and makes you feel things.
Exactly! PG has forever been my favorite 'pop' artist and this song definitely exists in that Us kinda realm texturally and narratively. I'm sure for a lot of people like myself this was one of the only chart moments in recent memory that was not only interesting but downright captivating!
Great comparison with Peter Gabriel. Especially the formula of starting the vocals low then exploding the vocals higher for chorus. Peter Gabriel is a champion for that
I love this song. When I learned it was released in 2011 I liked it even more because of how the rhythm kind of alludes to music from the 80’s. I don’t even remember hearing it for the “first time” because it’s just always been in my memory as long as I’ve been listening to music. Anyone else fee this way?

This song is my candidate for best pop single of the millennium, and it's because there's more than one thing that makes it an incredible record.
Both vocal performances are superb. Kimbra does have that explosive power but they both convey so much emotion. The instrumentation is just perfection, the production is wonderful, the songwriting, structure and lyrics are all immense. It's just all around a masterpiece.
Think their combination is what elevates everything to another level.

I don't usually comment on this type of video, but I wanted to say of all the "about the artist" type videos out there, this is one of the best ones I have watched, especially the way the video side of it was put together. Not just random photos of the artist mixed into the voice over, but an actual video production for it. Nicely done. Going to check out more of your videos just becasue of that.
shoutout to gotye for making a song because of his passion and not just for money
i think that's exactly the reason he quit doing Gotye.
I gotta agree, most of his songs are great!!!

They flow so smoothly because they actually have a similar origin. Latin music, specially Brazilian, has a big influence in african percussion
Errrr because Latin drums are based off of African drums?
@@antoniocerqueira304 Not exactly, the brazilian percussion patterns are unique, yes, they received influence from Africa but they are not the same. You can go to Africa right now and you'll not find anything similar to Samba, or argentinian Tango, and neither Salsa, the latin rhythms are unique. Moreover in Latin music some of the drum patterns people hear also come from the percussive patterns of native americans and europeans who also played drums and percussive instruments.

The song isn't mimicking "twinkle twinkle little star" it is literally using "Bah Bah Black Sheep" the notes match up perfectly.
wooooooooooooooaahh you just bleww my mind!!
i didnt even hear that! so cool
Its just put into a minor key lol
No obviously it's mimicking the Alphabet Song
It's pretty much the same melody, just rhythmically different
What if I told you its the same tune. Mozart is cool
I remember when this song came out... the accompanying video was groundbreaking and so visually memorable. I could watch/listen over and over.
GOTYE made a one hit wonder and then disappeared......now he is just somebody that we used to know
HOLY SHIT I GET IT NOW!
Nah man, you should listen to State of the Art that shits even more fire

@@treasurelessgaming762 Bruh I have no idea what the hell you were doing when you typed this lol. Did you have a stroke or something?
The album was good. It was like Peter Gabriel cross with 2010s gloss.
Peter Gabriel is a champion for that
Yes! I loved his releases as it felt like Peter Gabriel for the next generation. And this mashup was perfect: th-cam.com/video/KLnytQRkOuc/w-d-xo.html
Nailed it.
LyraFay12 Exactly, especially Easy Way Out.
Narrator: remembered wired headphones?
Me using one: uhmmmm yes???
"Now it's time to cut them off and make out like it never happend."
"Don'^t get caught up on some wires that you used to know."
This just got me!

I love this song. When I learned it was released in 2011 I liked it even more because of how the rhythm kind of alludes to music from the 80’s. I don’t even remember hearing it for the “first time” because it’s just always been in my memory as long as I’ve been listening to music. Anyone else fee this way?
Yes, like Sting!
Perfectly said-that’s how I feel
