Day is not the same as 24 hours, not in the past and not today.
The earth is not about 6,000 years old and the Bible does not teach this. Hebrews 4:9-10: "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his." This tells us that the 7th day has not ended. Thus day 7 is a long time span, thus day 1 to 6 must be a long time span. Each believer are to enter into day 7. Also there no "evening and morning" for the 7th day. As day 7 as not ended. Biblical Hebrew has a limited vocabulary, with fewer words compared to other languages, such as English or Spanish. This means words often have multiple meanings determined by context. Day - yom is commonly rendered as day in English translations, but the word yom can be used in different ways to refer to different time spans thus literally is:
      Sunrise to sunset
      Sunset to next sunset
Time period of unspecified length. (long time span ).
We use the word day the same today: In my grandfather’s day cars did not go very fast. I work the day shift. (Both are not 24 hours)
Deuteronomy 33:15 and Habakkuk 3:6 "ancient mountains".
Gen. 2:4 “in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens”
The events of day 6 can not have happened in 24 hours.
Have you entered into the 7th as Hebrews 4:9-10 asks you to?
Creationism does not equal young Earth. There are many Old Earth creationists.

@@djsarg7451 I do enter into the 7th day once a week after working 6 days, as God did in creating and I rest on the 7th day as God did when finished creating. Do you think God does not want us to work now? Or is this referring to working for salvation? The bible teaches we need to repent from our sins and obey God's commands as we are not saved through our works but by the grace of God for past sins and repenting obeying God's commands when we make God the Lord of our life. The bible was clear in the 24 hour day by stating evening and morning, there is no way around that.

We can't use the Book of Nature because it's cursed?? The Bible tells us to use it in Psalm 19. Look at Psalm 65, does that sound like God cursed all of nature as Eric says?? It says "...cursed is the ground FOR YOUR SAKE, in sorrow (toil) shall you eat of it all the days of your life." Genesis 3:17. In other words, you now have to toil and sweat to cultivate the soil to make the crops grow. "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof." Psalm 24:1. God don't curse what's His own.

The ground didn’t change Adam did , now the ground is cursed at the hands of sinful people.

    • @djsarg7451
      @djsarg7451 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

One of the most common and serious misunderstandings of Scripture is the belief that the Bible teaches that the fall of Adam so corrupted the natural realm that science no longer can be trusted to yield reliable information about the past condition of the universe, Earth, or Earth's life. This belief is based on a misinterpretation of Genesis 3:17: “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life." The ground here clearly refers to the soil that humans would work to get their food. To interpret "ground" as referring to the entirety of the universe or Earth is going far beyond the intent of the text. Also this passage does not state that the ground was cursed because God changed the physics or the chemistry of the ground. It puts the blame on human sin. Because of human sin the ground would be so abused that it would not produce food to the degree it would if it were not for human sin. This interpretation makes Genesis 3:17 consistent with Psalm 19:1-4, Psalm 97:6, and Romans 1:18-22, that God has given us two utterly trustworthy and reliable books: the book of Scripture and the book of nature. Both books are inerrant. Therefore, any conflict between science and theology is one of human misinterpretation and not because anything in either book is corrupted. As for Romans 9:18-22, Paul is explaining that God designed the entire universe and everything in it from the very moment of creation with the redemption of a countless number of humans in mind. Thus, from the cosmic creation moment God subjected the universe to an unchanging, pervasive law of decay (John 16:33, Jeremiah 33:25).

@@priscillajervey8345 that’s not a good argument, because the same is true with the Christian Church. The Church and theologians believed the earth was stationary and the sun revolved around it. Based on a simple reading of many scriptures this view was held for almost 1500 years starting with Aristotle. But a few scientists dared to question the consensus. The same is happening today , eventually the church will admit that the earth is billions not thousands. Hovind made some strong points at the beginning about context and the probable meaning of the word "yom" in Genesis 1. However, I still have some questions, for example why do Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 seem to display some contradictions if the text is purely literal/historical? Ultimately, I believe Jesus is the Truth, and none of us sees with perfect clarity. Jeremiah 23:20, Jeremiah 30:24, 1 Corinthians 13:12. I think this debate is one of the better opportunities Christians have to practice humility, intellectual wrestling and move toward the oneness that Jesus prayed for his church.

@ "In the day that He created it". Genesis chapter 2. At least a week there. The Day of the Lord will not be a literal 24 hours. In fact, yom meant some of the daylight hours, all of the daylight hours, sunset to sunset (24 hours) or any set period of time having a beginning and end.
If you read the early church fathers and first century Jews you'd find most had no problem with a long period of time. Origen noted time as we mark it did not start until the 4th day.
Philo believed creation was instantaneous and that the 6 days were figurative or metaphorical. "It is quite foolish to think that the world was created in six days or in a space of time at all...[he explains his reasoning]...When, then, Moses says, 'He finished His work on the sixth day, we must understand him to be adducing not a quantity of days, but a perfect number, namely six."
"This is such an old and worn rebbuttal."
      - And yet Justin Martyr and Irenaeus both refer to Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8 to support that potentially a day could be at least 1000 years- with Irenaeus noting Adam did, in fact, die before reaching 1000 years, showing that in the "day" he ate the fruit he died.
*Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Augustine. None of them held to a literal 24 hour period*.
So, no. A "literal" 24 hour period according to the modern English, Western culture definition is NOT the orthodox (aka original) view of the length of the creation days.

I am neither agreeing or disagreeing with either party. Merely observing the arguments and commenting on the efficacy of assertions.
1)Not a fan that Dr. Ross gave a wide ‘talking points’ exposition as his reason(s) for the point of which no part was directly connected, only implied or, in most cases, are Red Herring Fallacy.
2)Agree with Hovind, ‘nature’ is not a 67th book of the Bible.
3)Disagree with Hovind that ‘according to Scripture, nature has been corrupted.’ Isa6:3 says ‘the whole world is full of His glory.’ Psa24 & 93 talk about the earth & the sea are God’s and lift up their voice honorifically. Gen3:17 isn’t that the land is cursed on account of God making it poorly, the land is cursed on account of man’s sin. To say another way, ‘man’s toils/labors in the dirt will be exhausting and imperfect.’ Which is what v18-19 say. Not ‘the whole earth is cursed and because God messed up in creation & man has to deal with the struggle of a cursed earth- heads up Adam.’
4a)To the article 4 ‘Holy Spirit never teaches something contrary to Scriptures’: Do the Scriptures say explicitly the earth is young? Do the Scriptures say explicitly the earth is old? So neither is a ‘contrary’ to Scriptures. A False Dilemma fallacy is established that ‘one of these strictly 2 positions of the nearly dozen is wrong.’ If there are more than 2 views, and if both parties can be wrong, then you have a fallacy. B)to both parties, and don’t get me wrong academic discussion & debate on this topic is meritorious, my question is: if you got to heaven and God said earth is billions of years old to Hovind or the earth is barely 10 thousand years to Ross, how much time was wasted on a tertiary matter being elevated to a soteriological level instead of actually spreading the gospel?
5)Another article ‘the Bible asserts in propositional statements, but nature doesn’t.’ This is a true statement, however the article doesn’t say how God communicates in & through the natural world He created & still maintains day in and day out. You make an Equivocation fallacy to require nature to be propositional when inerrancy is about the Bible.
6)Attacking Dr. Ross at his testimony of becoming a Christian, where God genuinely changed his heart from stone to flesh, and saying ‘his testimony contradicts inerrancy which, as previously quoted the Holy Spirit cannot do,’ is basically calling him unsaved. That’s an Ad Hominem fallacy.
7)Completely agree with Hovind that Ross cannot stand on a ‘book of nature’ being in the ballpark or equivalent to Scripture in inerrancy. There is no basis for it. God can teach through nature, God can save through nature & the revelation of His divine attributes, but nature is not inerrant as we describe the Bible to be.

Eric talks about a bias …but happens to have the exact same view as his dad lol . Also he reads so much into scripture. All the times he mentions word “Yom” is in the Bible? Someone would have to strictly calculate that out to determine the assumption 24hrs…Some one like my grandmother with very strong faith doesn’t understand a lot of deeper theological takes and would never be able to “clearly” see young earth. You may have a view Eric, it might even be a decent one, but to act like it’s “exact” “absolute” ….”clear in scripture” is highly skeptical. Eric and his dad can never be wrong in any debate I’ve witnessed they also cast judgement on others and poke at the strength of peoples faith. Eric did with IP badly. “Your righteousness is to exceed the Pharisees” , you can have views and be humble and think provisionally. I think it’s safe to say its okay not to fully understand how God did everything, and we don’t have to cram contemporary science into every passage.

I appreciate both perspectives but they both can’t be right. I use to agree with the teachings of Hovind, but I’m learning more towards Dr. Ross interpretation now. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the Bible says that nature is corrupted in the sense he used. Humanity did fall and nature is not perfect, but it is still through nature that we know that God exists according to Romans. I also noticed that those who study the cosmos like Dr. Ross has a better understanding than those who do not. I think time moved differently in the early universe and time moves differently in space so I think it is possible and even more plausible that the universe is old. We don’t know what astronomers and cosmologist know, that’s why we are the body of Christ and need each other to understand these things.

Or to say, the unspoken details of chapter One. Saying the days of creation are not 24 hour periods, is not Spirit Led. It's a carnal perspective.

I don't understand how believers that limit the age of the earth as starting at the time when Adam and Eve were created, can reconcile the fact that 1) clearly angels were created before man's creation (Job 38:7), as angels are seen rejoicing when God was laying it's foundations-- and 2) that Satan, before his fall, is seen in Ezekiel 28:13-19 inhabiting a "mineral type earth" particularly in Eden past.
The topography of this ancient "earth" and "Edenic garden" - is different than ours -- for Satan dwells amongst the most beautiful of gemstones --the same gems that we know are mined from underneath our vegetative earth Gen. 1.
Clearly there were inhabitants existing at one time on the same earth core ---
but before God judged Satan and ex-nihilo, "re-created" the Earth's topography for man.
It fits with the fact that in Gen. 1 the curtain opens on a dark, seemingly prior-judged earth that God then re-creates into the world we now inhabit.
It matches the fact that the Garden of Eden"s Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was already there before man, warning him later not to follow Satan's ways and take God's leadership lightly.

Here is a new idea - whatever the length of the day was, there could have been millions of years between the days. There is no statement that the days immediately succeeded each other. What is the defining function of Elohim? It is judgement. We are misled in believing physical creation occurred during each day. Why do we say that NASA or the TVA were created by the federal government, when the government simply approved their creation? The same situation applies to the days of creation. Elohim approved only what was within the divine plan for the earth. Only the approved ones have legitimate spiritual status for the earth. Other organisms that were not approved could have been predecessors to those that were approved.

Genesis 1:2 was translated and the world became void and without form…. And the re-creation that took place in 6 literal days. That meant that the earth created in 1:1 could be millions of years old but the recreation in verses 2 and following is only 6,000 years old and was created in 6 literal days. The Fundamentals said that dinosaurs and all the geological formations that scientists say are millions of years old were part of the predates world God destroyed when Satan got proud and rebelled.
These men including Darby the founder of dispensationalism all strongly defended the inerrancy and infallibility of Gods word but taught that the earth was older than just 6000 years.

Romans Ch 1 presents general revelation ("the book of nature") as proof of God's existance and majesty to mankind. Eric erroneously contradicts this scripture saying creation (nature) is fallen, invalidating general revelation. Hugh Ross, through the lens of modern science, simply validates and expands upon general revelation (scripture) in great detail, for the sake of mankind (unbelievers). So, the "book of nature" does support scripture.
2 Peter 3:8 ( ...one day and a thousand years are the same to the Lord...) reflects His patience and that His perspective is outside of time as we see it. So could a day be in the creation description in Gen 1, if He so chose to mean it like that. Other points Ross gives seem valid: different meanings of Hebrew for day, father, and un-matching genealogies, etc give credence to this interesting perspective.
Eric, a bit hostile in attitude the whole time in contrast to Hugh, started to accuse Ross of heresy, but Ross diffused that. God could have easily and plainly said a million times in scripture exactly when creation happened with a simple back reference if it was crucial.. Eg. "When Moses crossed the Red Sea, it had been 3000 years since creation." John 3:16 does not say "Whomever believes in young earth creation will be saved" ...
Jesus is our Sabbath rest and peace under the new covenant... Rest from working to earn God's acceptance, and freedom from legalism, Performance Christianity (PC), and new creatures in Christ. So, we're always enjoying the sabbath (day 7).

What I think unpleasant at this discussion is the way how Eric uses covert ad hominem attacks towards a fellow man in Christ- and I think that's very disappointing and unchristian but unfortunately very prominent with YECnists. Eric argues with statistics how many times the word 'yom" means a literal translation etc but there it already gets unfair as we don't know the examples he is using so we can't follow is line of argument. Why however use unfair argumentative methods in a Christian debate?
The ad hominem attacks how Ross arguably got his viewpoint from science and just "squeezed" it into scripture is not an honest argument either and not valid. It's just an ad hominem attack ment to discredit the person and I must say that sort of discussion technique is not crowned by love but more of obvious covert hatred.
Is it impossible that God intended the Genesis story to be more poetic and not 100% literal? Don’t even we simplify complicated issues in stories to our children? Aren’t we also children for God? Our IQ is barely 140. Gods IQ is probably infinite so you want to tell me it’s impossible God intended Genesis 1 to be more figurative and poetic, after all do Man and Woman literally become "one flesh" or was it really an "Apple" that Eve gave to Adam? I’m not saying Adam and Eve didn’t exist, the Genealogy from Adam to Abraham, Noah and Christ is clear and true but the creation story could be more of an attempt to give us stupid humans an idea of what happened instead of a 100% literal account. The Bible uses a similar approach in many places. There is the 70weeks prophecy of Daniel which is not literal 70 weeks either but a day is actually a year! Not literally 70 weeks. So how can we be sure Genesis is 100% literal? Another issue is wouldn’t it be more faithful to just trust that God will reveal all that happened one day and we just trust on that and accept we are like Children and have faith in just that. We know that God created everything through Jesus and he created the universe in steps, but why must we insist we "know" exactly what happened? Why? Is that not Christian Narcissism to be so boastful to claim you "know" what happened and exclude any other possible intention God might have?! I would be too afraid and respectful of God to claim i know exactly what happened and what he intended. I think it’s much more humble to accept we needn’t know exactly. Also see the vibes coming from these discussions. Do they elevate Christ? No. They harm the cause of spreading the Gospel and the love of Christ because we have allowed dogmatism to overshadow love. Is the topic relevant to our faith no!

Ever since I learned about the big bang, I had fun with the idea that what happened in the moment just before the big bang was the big collapse of the previous universal existence, which is what will also happen at the end of our present universal existence. Just a cyclical series of big bangs, existences, and big collapses, and so on. Not trying to debate, it's just fun to think about.

God created (formed from nothing) in the beginning (an undisclosed time before the first day). But made (transformed for service) the planets in six days. The first day is when the world wide ocean which darkened the sea floor (the face of the deep) became shallow enough over the continents as the ocean basins opened. Since the first day we had a pre existing earth and universe so we had old materials without days being of a long context.
The processes that transformed the earth from a smooth earth covered with water created a surface with basins and continents in 3 days. This generated what the naturalist attibutes to plate tectonics. So we have 3 days not hundreds of millions if years. No new interpretations of scriptures are needed to accomodate deep time.

The Bible states that nothing should be added to or subtracted from the Word of God. God called light day and darkness night, nothing to do with time! Let's leave it at that. The Bible also makes it crystal clear that time is relative! A day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. Einstein proved that time is relative! So please stop arguing about something we know nothing about. The Bible tells us the laws of physics are fixed and we are instructed to put everything to the test and hold fast to that which is good. That's the scientific method. So God created the scientific method. That means following where the evidence leads. The book of Nature should confirm the book of Scripture and it does using the scientific method. Scientific and archaeological discoveries are proving the accuracy of the Bible on a monthly basis in our lifetime! Only God knows the end from the beginning. We are just discovering what the Bible already knew. Maranatha

If your best friend , mother or someone tells you they are going to be out of town for two weeks, would you be able to figure out when they would be back?? "To the LORD a thousand years is as a day and a day as a thousand years" but NOT to us mortals. I agree that Nature confirms the Bible. God's word is truth.

If we didn't know how long a day was then how could scriptures tell us that Adams lived 930 yrs and how many days did rain upon the whole earth. How old was Noah when he died. How could there be any genelogies. If one didn't know how many hours make up a day how could the age of anything be determined?? How do we know that it rained for 40 days and nights etc, doesn't that present a problem? The creation narrative tells us that God pla ced the sun and moon in the heavens for US to determine the days, weeks and seasons. The moon the months. God did this for us, but man in his high brow attitude and pride want to tell God - we know better than you!

Biblical Hebrew has a smaller vocabulary than English. In biblical Hebrew, there is no word for universe. Instead, the Hebrew phrase that is translated “the heavens and the earth” is used to refer to the universe-the entirety of physical reality. The phrase is used thirteen times in the Old Testament, always referring to all matter, energy, space, and time in the universe. We now know that event was 13.787 ±0.020 billion years. This has been checked, proven and measured with many tools and they all agree. It is not just space that came to be 13.787 billion years ago, but time also. The universe is finite and expanding. Just as the Bible stated thousands of years ago. To deny the existence of a Creator is an error.

That is hard to do when in a debate or discussion such as this. So, good for him with all that - but I still he is wrong.

    1. There is plenty of scientific evidence that appears to support old earth creation.
    2. There is also plenty of scientific evidence that supports young earth creation.
    3. There are credible & accredited PHD’s on both sides.
So that leaves me with just two points to consider ….

This tells us that the 7th day has not ended.

The Bible is only a snapshot of what God did. You cannot find whole truth about how much time elapsed during God's creation by those few words. Moses was trying to describe the vision God gave him about creation. Moses did not have knowledge of the universe, he did know little about the sun or the orbiting earth.
Moses did his best to describe what he saw just like others in the Bible who tried to describe what they saw when God showed them visions.
Obeying and worshipping God is the main point of the Bible. We do that by accepting the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins and loving Jesus enough to do everything He taught us.
We may know someday all about creation but we may not know because it is not important to our salvation. Jesus is important to our salvation. God's ways are so far above our ways, our thinking, and our knowledge, that we must not even try to know what God knows.
