The calcium and magnesium in RainMix are not actually higher than MSU. If you look at the label carefully, they are listed as CaO and MgO. For MSU, you are given just the percentage of Ca and Mg. To compare them accurately, it is necessary to covert the percentage of Rain Mix, removing the O component. IIRC, it comes out to something like 7.8 Ca and 2.5 Mg in the RainMix. (similarly, potassium and phosphorous are listed as K2O and P2O5, so they are not 3% and 15% but actually less).
Here in the US, there are a lot of MSU type fertilizers, it depends on what you want to spend if you want an "all in one". There is always the option of buying a cheaper fertilizer that does not contain Ca or Mg and adding CalMag as a supplement. Funny story about CalMag, I generally don't use it anymore. But it was in a recent video of yours and I was thinking I used to use it in the winter when I was flushing and I don't know why I quit. So I was going to order some and then I found half a tub (mine is a powder) sitting there behind the other fertilizers.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe!! Coming in with the deets! 👍🏼 I took the information from the respective web pages that I have linked, so seeing that it was not as complete as it could have been, I appreciate you adding the details, going into greater detail and explaining the variables in more detail as well, thank you 🫶🏼 I LOVE it when I find something that I would have otherwise had to buy!! Double score 😆 My tripod kept coming loose and I could not tighten the stand enough without it slipping out of the holding. The plastic inside must have worn off. Anyway, I knew I had some electrician tape somewhere, and for the life of me could not find it. Also, I keep forgetting to get some when I am down by the dollar store. ALSO, fixing the socket for the washing machine, we could have used some electrical tape, but ended up using duct tape instead. Long story... today I went to get the duct tape to try and sort that thing out with my tripod, and behold... the electricians tape was 'right there'! Just like that!! 🤪 like I did not check that drawer a million times, because that is where the duct tape, sello tape etc is kept. So, yes, logic would have it the electrician tape would be in there as well. Not that I saw it for the past months that I have been looking for it! But, I felt as though I had struck gold today 😆 thank you so much for watching, listening and for your input, Michael!! I hope your day was fabYOUlous 🫶🏼❤️🌸

🦒🥰🪷🌷🌻 Great information comparing both fertilizers. I've been using RainMix since it became available and I am very happy with it. Long ago, I heard a couple of bad reviews about it but it was obvious why they were made. Also, a friend of mine was kind enough to bring me a batch of MSU from the US 3 years ago. I used it for about 18 months but I could not see a difference in orchid's performance when compared with RainMix. I now use RO water but in my early days with orchids I used RainMix with tap water and all was ok. I also notice some kind of residue but I never knew what it was. MSU and RainMix seem to be both well balanced fertilizers. However there might be others that do the job as long as they have Cal and Mg as well as the micro nutrients. I also agree with you, without adequate light and temperature, no fertilizer can help to perform miracles 😅
Thank you so much for the shout out, amiga mia. Much appreciated. Fall has defintely settled in, hasn't it? Little sun for weeks now but orchids will manage, I trust. Hope you are doing better 😘😘😘😘

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🥰💐 good evening, good morning, meine liebe Freundin! Thank you so very much for watching and for your feedback!! Thank YOU so much for this wonderful gift 🙏🏼 I hope to continue to grow my orchids through the winter and that you will see just how precious this stash is for them! Thank you 🙏🏼 I dug into those bad reviews and said nothing. I knew that the product was not being used correctly and that the media was at fault for anything going wrong, not the product! Also, if pots are not flushed, then any fertilizer will build up in pots and they will leach to the top. User error! Much like with computers, usually, it is user error when something goes wrong 😉 (unless it is google, then it is all google's fault! 😂) you have the residue as well. Interesting! It does not bother me anymore. At the beginning I thought that I was not getting all the product I wanted, but now, I am glad that the RainMix holds up to the ambient humidity. MSU... goodness me, don't breathe or that stuff will turn to paste before you know it. Really grateful that RainMix exists for us 🫶🏼 and that Portugal stocks it! I prefer to come and shop for it myself, honk when I drive past your house 😉 but, the shillingis won't stretch that far. Maybe one day! Maybe one day I can say, hey... would you like to show me where you buy RainMix? I only need 8 hrs to get there 😂😂 Fall has set in, yes! Today I had cold hands while I was editing and well... Grrrrrr!! But I hope that you had a fabulous day ❤️🐾❤️🌸

I've been using Rain Mix from the day it came available. Before that I tried several (commercial) orchid fertilizers without any very good results. Specially the liquid ones, often offered by orchid nurseries really are a waste of time and a lot of money.
As for water, I've used Rain Mix with collected (city) rain water, RO water and our tap water without any problems. I never had problems with any residue staying behind unsolved but I always mix it in with water of 18-20°C as this is the room temperature I store my water in. I never use colder water to water, mist or spray my orchids with. Some say they burned roots using Rain Mix, I never had that problem and is most likely caused by using the fertilizer wrong or not flushing the plants. The possible residue of fertilizer on the orchids most likely and of course wrong usage (like over dosing) could cause this with any fertilizer used.
The reason there's only 1 formula of Rain Mix is that it's impossible to create formulas that work for every different water type. The original MSU only should be used on any type of water since the composition of the other available products they offer has different components in it that don't really work. The slight differences in Rain Mix and MSU are also a tweak Akerne, the manufacturer of Rain Mix, made to improve the fertilizer and be good for every orchid genus. While MSU was mainly tested on Paphiopedilum, Rain Mix was tested on every possible genus of orchids available in collections and tested by several well known orchid growers. For me, Rain Mix is the only good and well affordable orchid fertilizer available in Europe.

HI Marc 😍💐 I used to have only comercial fertilizers when I had my orchids in the 90s, and there was nothing really wrong with them back then. But, this is a different era and we know a lot more now. I would consider it sacrilege to NOT use something as good as RainMix now. The price comparison is astounding... I was blown away by how pricey MSU was when I bought it, but then again, sometimes we get caught up with 'expensive, so it must be good!' Well, that is rubbish. I do not like a product that starts to liquify the moment you open the container. Even in my super dry climate 🙄 thank you for the feedback on the water type that you used together with RainMix. That information is important feedback and backs the product up in case someone needs to know the answer to that question. I do not use cold water on my orchids either. Even in winter, if it gets too cold, I will warm up RO water in the kettle and mix with the RO coming out of the faucet to get the temperature up. My outdoor orchids don't mind cold water, but still, I do not mix RainMix into water that is cold, still I have residue. Maybe there is another reason I have some residue in the buckets and that could be the shelf life of having to have it shipped to another outlet and not bought 'fresh' from the supplier. It doesn't matter. The RainMix did not turn to sludge even after 2 years, and this year my humidity was crazy high for 3 months straight! I mentioned that the reason for a single formula for RainMix is that it makes not sense to have one formula for all the variables of city / well water. It was an educated guess, but thank you for confirming that. It always annoyed me when I heard people talk about MSU having the well / city water formula, but they would never specify that that specific formula was geared toward THEIR well /city water. Details, small details, but sometimes they matter!! imo. I am with you on the choice of fertilizer for orchids if talking the European market. We are lucky to have RainMix available and I am certainly not looking back 👍🏼 really appreciate your input, Marc and for giving me the opportunity to use RainMix for the past 2 years. Please send my thank you to Akerne as well 🙏🏼 thank you, also, for watching! I hope you had a fabulous day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids I never have any residue, whatever water I use. I use it in my sprayers without a problem. Of course Fernanda gets it at her local orchid dealer/shop and I don't know how long it's been standing there. I do know that it is shipped in a very large shipment, to Portugal and on quit a regular basis together with orchids. I will not go in to further detail but all orders are freshly made before shipping. Of course, I have it directly from the source/manufacturer and I know under what low humidity the components and the end product are stocked.
Note, that if necessary, Fernanda can always ask to get a 1 kg bucket in if she can wait a few weeks.
I Had a looong talk wit the person who developed and tweaked Rain Mix last summer and was planning to do a video on the differences between both products, how to use it and so on. The thing is we talked about it for over 3 hours and in the end there were more than one fap in my memory. It's possible I will have this talk again next spring but then I will record it and pour it into some useful information because there are differences, certainly in the newer releases of MSU, specially the new products. The developer of Rain Mix explained it all but at that time it didn't all stuck in my mind as I was only there to pick up some orchids and was not prepared for this chemical lesson.
As for commercial fertilizers, mostly sold in a liquid form, there are huge differences in the components used and many are not well absorbed by orchids. On top of that, you always over pay when buying liquid fertilizers whatever green you use it for.
To finish, I have been using Rain Mix for over 15 years now and there were some tiny tweaks done to it to make it better. The red coloration you get when it is mixed with water is not a coloring but a reaction of the iron that turns water reddish. for me this also helps to see which cans I already mixed it up in. And one more important thing! Always mix Rain Mix in the correct fertilizer/water ratio. If, let's say, you mix the content of a scoop in to a cup of water to dissolve and then add it to the correct amount of water (= 2 liter) then you get a chemical reaction because of the product/water ratio and it changes the fertilizer because the chemicals start binding in the wrong way. This is the same with MSU. I say it in a simple way but it was detailed explained in my long talk. The developer of R M is a chemist.
      Happy growing

I trust your well and getting better. When I began growing on a larger scale I did use MSU. Never happy with root growth, foliage growth was fine. I talk to many commercial growers, most are pushing their orchids with alot of fertilizer. I now have a friendly relationship with a major grower. What he uses for fertilizer in his greenhouses is not what he uses for his private collection. A year ago I started using a diff product 7-8-6 and add their micro's supplement. This fertilizer is made in CA, here in USA. Several months out of the year only feeding about half my orchids do to massive new root growth. My mix is 230ppm, Ph 6.8, RO water 5.5 to 6.0. Feed 3 weeks 4th flush.
I'm ignorant of orchid growing only 2 years in. Always learning, that's why I watch every video by the Orchid Master and spread the word. Thank You😊

HI Bob 😍💐 I feel a lot better, yes, thank you for your concern. Sometimes I feel very tired, out of the blue, but I am able to get some decent sleep, which has been evading me the past weeks. Brain fog is a thing 🙃 I like the lower ppm concentration as well, it helps keep any salt build up at a minimum. In the first year of my collection, I had a standard set of orchids that were all dealt with at the same time. Fast forward 5 years later and I have to deal with my orchids depending on what they are doing now, incl. size active growth, resting or whatever. My efficient fertilizer care 'one fit for all' is now out of the window. Now, I have to go with many different ppm levels to accommodate the activity of the orchids in question. My visual is my guide now. I do not consider anyone growing orchids ignorant, so Bob, I beg to differ! Respectfully😊 I appreciate you spreading the word, thank you so very much! And thank you for watching, for adding how you fertilize your orchids in the comments. This gives anyone reading the comments an alternative and it is much appreciated. I use rainmix and also get those granules at the bottom even after a few hours of dissolving-it worrys me that maybe some of the nutrients aren't getting released. Perhaps you are right and it's just the coating 😊

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

🫶🏼 It is the coating, of that I am certain now. Because, RainMix doesn't absorb the moisture in the air the way MSU does, I am certain that their coating is made of stronger stuff, and or they have more layers of the same to ensure that the granules stay separated over the lifetime span of the container. I have to say, I do prefer my fertilizer not turning into liquid so quickly. It was most annoying when I used MSU and with my low humidity climate, for it to happen the way it did, I dare not even think what those that use MSU with high humidity conditions have to deal with. 🫣

HI Yenny 😍💐 that MSU is far too expensive to be turning into a paste like that! I have a very dry climate, hardly any humidity to speak of, had it stored in double bag and an air tight container, but still, it turned to paste. NOT exactly ideal. However, was in touch with Ray Barkalow back then and he said it wasn't a problem to use the product in that state, as long as it was not being stored like that and not used for 6 months, to then start using it. He mentioned that it was also possible to make a concentrate by adding water and then add the concentrate in small increments into the water to the desired ppm. 🤷🏼‍♀️ as I paid a hefty little sum for my stash of MSU back then, I used every single bit of it that I had, even filled the empty bag with water to rinse the bag out 😆 I bet your orchids are doing fine with the combo that you have for them, right? No deficiencies, no weak growths? Sometimes we do get caught up in the hype of a product and then realize, that is all it is, hype. The price was the craziest comparison that I had with the RainMix equivalent. MSU is daylight robbery (my opinion) 😉 btw, Yenny, I am adding a link here, if you would like to have a looks see 🌸 th-cam.com/video/g0Jj4SXIHbE/w-d-xo.html Timestamp 14:07 if you don't want to sit through and wonder which bloom is for you 😊 I want to thank you for being here, for all your support! Look at that Laelia perrinii in full bloom (17:53)... Mine is also already collapsing after ca. 9 days.
I'm surprised MSU does not include sulfate. Sulfur is such an important element in proteins. Same for cobalt - it's essential in metabolism of C1-carbon chains. That immediately tells me that RainMix is the superior product!

MSU does actually have sulfur, it used to be listed on the label and has disappeared for some reason. IIRC, it was 0.5 S. If you read the label, the Cu is derived from MgSO4, as is Zn. Interestingly, cobalt is not listed on any fertilizer I can find in the US, even the best hydroponic formulas for marijuana do not list it. If it is essential, I can't imagine it wouldn't be included, so perhaps it is not required by law to list it?

@@michaelmccarthy4077 More research revealed that only certain plants actually really require Co - mainly N-fixing plants, which orchids obviously don't belong to.
But concerning the S - good to know that they apparently just forgot to include it!

HI Matt 😍💐 the physicist, the chemist, the brains!! I have worded my title in such a way to hint at the fact that I am of the same opinion. I like RainMix a LOT and I wish I would have known about it before I went down the whole rigamarole of getting the MSU to come through the customs. Maybe it was my 4 bag order that raised a little suspicion, but when I showed the authorities my phone, all the orchid data, while they thought I was cuckoo in the head based on what they saw, what I had to explain etc, I got the certificate which allowed me to pick my package up at the post office. 😊 the fact that I had it in a sludge state sooner than I could finish a bag, annoyed me. But yeah, RainMix has been great. Thank you so much for watching, Matt!! I hope you had a fabulous Friday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Aquí está el enlace para RainMix Europa www.rainmix.eu/ Hoy tuvimos un día soleado, pero el tiempo no es estable para los próximos días. Irónicamente, estamos hablando de un producto llamado 'mezcla de lluvia' 🤪😂
