Glad you're easing Jay into some more 90s music, Amber!! Goo Goo Dolls are a great 90s band, and I think you would love "Name", "Black Balloon", "Broadway", and "Here Is Gone". However, you have yet to do many awesome 90s bands, like Dave Matthews Band ("Ants Marching"), Toad the Wet Sprocket ("Walk on the Ocean"), Live ("Lightning Crashes"), Smash Mouth ("Walking On the Sun") or Toadies ("Possum Kingdom"). For Female Friday, you could do Garbage ("Stupid Girl"), Lush ("Sweetness and Light"), Tori Amos ("Caught a Lite Sneeze"). or The Sundays ("Goodbye").

Absolutely my very fave song by the Goo Goo Dolls. It rocks but it's so jammed full of beautiful lyrics as well. I always get emotional when I hear it. Plus, my middle name is May, and that's the name of the girl in the song. The way Amber reacted and chair-danced to it is exactly how I get when I hear it. Thanks for doing this one, guys, and reminding me of it!

Name is absolutely the next song you need to do from Goo Goo Dolls. That's the first song that broke the band into the mainstream. They're from Buffalo NY, and came from the Punk scene. Though their most popular songs wouldn't lead you to that conclusion... If you want a great deep cut, Broadway is the go to for me. Should've been a single.

I love the Goo Goo Dolls too (this song probably being my favourite) but "Name" is brilliant as well and also John Rzeznik's song "I'm Still Here" (as used in Disney's Treasure Planet). If we're making requests, can we have Johnny Clegg and Jaluka's song "Scatterlings of Africa" as well?

John is such an amazing songwriter and a truly witty man. A real artist. He and Robbie are the coolest; love them also because they are from Buffalo, just across the border from where I live in Canada. Love everything they do, especially Here is Gone, Sympathy. If you ever get a chance to see the live version of Iris in Buffalo, 4th of July, POURING RAIN...John and Robbie out there soaked, the crowd staying for the whole set. Love them!!!!

John was orphaned as a young teen and raised by his 4 older sisters; he and Robbie were roommates and besties forever. Robbie used to be the lead singer, but as John came to write more of the songs, they kind of switched.

He's singing to a girlfriend who just got an abortion. The verse you referenced is "Don't you love the life you killed, the priest is on the phone, your father hit the wall, your ma disowned you, don't suppose I'll ever know what it means to be a man, or if it's all my fault" I cannot think of any other situation that could be solved with "Do you want to get married, or run away" as he sings in another line.

So here in Buffalo, they are still crazy popular, but one of the things that Robbie (their bass player) is known for is hosting a huge like multiday music and art festival in town with all kinds of local bands of every genre and local artists. Their older stuff is a totally different vibe than the stuff from the album you guys have heard songs from and may be even more up Jay's alley. Johnny Rzeznik as lead vocalist has a distinct sound. Other great songs include Black Balloon, Name, and Better Days. Some other '90s and early 2000's bands that have great catalogs of music (like the Goo Goo Dolls) include The Killers, Gin Blossoms, The Fray, and Lifehouse.

nothing like hearing the boys from my home town...yes they are from Buffalo, NY. and John Rzeznik still owns the house he grew up in on our "Superman Corner" (the intersection of Clark and Kent streets here in the Buff). Y'all really need to check out their " Live in Buffalo: July, 4, 2004" concert. they were amazing. 60K people in the plaza before our city hall to hear the Goos play

From Buffalo, New York. Apparently a girl i went to high school with near Toronto married the singer. Not sure if that's true or not but that's what i've heard. Edit: i just heard Jay say under the radar. Totally agree. Everything was grunge in the 90s. I live in Toronto which is only 2 hours from Buffalo so Goo Goo Dolls were on radio a lot here but still overall i think they flew under the radar too. Good point Jay.

I think sometimes people don't realize how rockin' the Goo Goo Dolls really are. There is a great video of them in a record store in their home town of Buffalo from 1993 that's awesome. Check out the song Flat Top from the album A Boy Named Goo. It's about how the T.V. can brainwash people which can be related to social media today. Also check out my favourite tune of theirs called Eyes Wide Open. It's about people who want everything but are too lazy to do anything about it. It's from the same album. They have so many other great tunes too like Broadway, Better Days, Ain't That Unusual, Girl Next To Me, We Are the Normal and Sympathy. To me, they are just a great straight up rock n roll band.

I love the Goo Goo Dolls, yes one of the greatest bands of the 90s!!! 💜❤💜❤💜❤💜 I know you already reacted to Iris, you should listen to "Name" ....that song reminds me of my dad...it played on the radio the day of his funeral and its become his song w me and my siblings. He wrote this dedicating it to his sisters about the tragic deaths of his mom and dad. ❤

Exactly, Goo goo dolls ARE alternative rock. They were played on alt rock radio stations. Alt rock was huge on the 90s. Hootie and the Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, R.E.M. Counting Crows all were played on alternative rock stations.

  • @DavidMichaelCommer

I've said it too often, but the music of the '90s was so much more diverse than that of any era I know of.
The Goo Goo Dolls were uniquitous on the radio, and theirs was the kind of easy-listening pop rock that I associate with the Gin Blossoms, Hootie and the Blowfish, Matchbox 20, even Alanis Morissette and similar '90s bands. Their vocalists usually had a grunge-light edge but the music was harmonious and easy to listen to either as a focal point or as background sound.
And they were played on the radio-oftentimes the *same* radio stations-that played Eminem's rap, grungier grunge, any of the many *brilliant* women singer-songwriters of the era (Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Fiona Apple, and on and on), Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and Céline Dion, house-inspired dance music artists such as Cece Peniston, Robin S, Crystal Waters, Jody Watley, Ace of Base-and so much more.
I should only speak for myself, but I will this time speak for my generation and say that I think this incredible musical diversity we were treated to during our coming-of-age era made those of us who belong to Generation X a lot more attuned to and appreciative of the joys and advantages of diversity of all kinds.
Something bizarre happened right after the 90s, and the endless diversity of music and creative blending of genres and astonishingly insightful young singer-songwriters of the time were replaced by paint-by-number Autotuned pop music. It was very weird and a huge loss in my opinion.
