I made the fancy video I promised for you. Is Midsommar another presentation of Wicker Man? Which is better? What is the meaning of 'wick"? The cycles of Nature and Demeter and Orphic Mysteries? The ritual and folk beliefs in the film? Is nature deified? Why Christopher Lee always be up in these trippy films? Jay has the answers!

Also Hårga, where the story is set, is famous in Sweden for a folk legend and song about the devil tempting youth to dance until they die on top of a hill.

    1. I think there's a lot of commentary on modernity in Midsommar. In modern society, your peers are pushing you away from family/partners (e.g., Christians friends try to convince him to leave Dani, Dani's friend tells her she can find someone else if Christian leaves); in the pagan Swedish commune, the whole family is involved in joining Christian and Pelle's sister together--often in extreme ways (e.g., mind altering drugs and "help" performing). In modern society, patricide/matricide are portrayed as an escape from darkness/depression; to the pagans, the elderly willing give up their lives to preserve the community. Death is present in both; it's shocking in both, but the pagan's ritualize it and "control" it.
I didn't get the feeling that Aster was promoting one over the other, but he clearly presents a dichotomy where we/the west/modern society have lost some positive aspects of pagan communities.
    2. I agree that we are left with the question about to what extent Pelle manipulated early events in the movie to get Dani. Maybe the script or an extended cut would help with this.
    3. The names are interesting. Josh, the African American grad student, shares his name with Jesus or Yeshua; Christian (i.e., Christianity) steals Josh's thesis and alters it slightly (i.e., Christianity has changed Jesus's message and ideas, who incidentally was stealing knowledge from the pagans). Mark (a gospel writer) is the fool as seen in the mural at the start of the film (i.e., the Biblical writers were fools). Dani derives her name from Daniel ("God is judge") but El/God is stripped from her name. God is not the judge. In the end, she is the judge (and now that Josh/Mark are already dead, she decides to end Christianity as well).

I still remember the first time I saw The Wicker Man (the original). It left me feeling dirty and deeply unsettled. I really didn't see it coming (the inspectors sacrifice). It was truly unsettling and the acting was top notch. So much so, it didn't even feel like acting. It still holds up today. With films from the 70's; that doesn't happen very often.
The remake holds up well too...in terms of hilarity. "The bees, no not the bees----- *my eyes* -----ahhhhhhh!" Yet, not a single bee was in either of his eyes. Any time I feel like a good laugh, or punching a woman-----I watch the remake.
Great analysis, Jay. You're a genuine gift. Not as much of a gift as the re-watchability of Nic Cage's Wicker Man------but it's a close second, for sure.

Lucifer is the planet venus. Venus was referred to as the Morning star because it was the brightest star in the morning sky. Thats what the bible verse is referring to as well, in hebrew is says “Helel ben shahar” (shining one), then when it got translated to greek they put lucifer which was the greek word for venus. ancients also didnt realize when they saw venus at night it was the same star, and they referred to it as the evening star (hesperides). The mythology of lucifer/venus is also tied to innana and her descent into the underworld. You can see venus today for yourself metaphorically fall from the sky each day. Your content is great I wish you would turn the music down its hard to concentrate.

Aurther Koestler had disdain for Christianity. In addition to saying that human sacrifice is a natural phenomena, he referred to Christ’s death as a voluntary human sacrifice that the masses deem natural. It’s is actually the end of all sacrifice and the embracing of grace that people truly crave. Human sacrifice is a practice that is abhorrent to the masses and pushed onto them by a psychopathic few. The stance Koestler took on this makes it apparent to me he is a terrible human being and of course a communist.
