No matter what anybody says, part of me says that Chetan acted naively when giving 'adaptation' rights away for this movie. He should have read the contract more carely, esp the part with 'rolling credits'. If such a contract is duly signed and executed by both parties on legal grounds, I don't think even the Writer's Guild would be able to get Mr. Hirani convicted in any civilized nation's legal system.
I am a big fan of Mr. Bhagat and Mr. Hirani. Both have done no less than excellence. I have read the book twice and its my 13th night continuously of watching 3 idiots. I would say, Hirani has just used a framework of the story and i could say, its his story. I was hurt to see my here Mr. Bhagat going public and there was not the same smile on his face as in the books. Whatever Hirani said in this video is correct but he is cleverly deviating from the issue at hand. Hirani said the following points in the video: 1.They had bought the rights of the novel.This is true and Bhagat never denied that. 2.He gave him credit in the rolling credits as was promised. The issue is that when the movie's story is around 50% similar to the novel, the book's name and his name should have been at the top of the rolling credits not at the end just like all the movies which are based on a book. 3. He had narrated the entire script to Bhagat. Bhagat never denied that. What he had written in his blog is that " the script was never shown to him ". There is a big difference between narration of the script and the actual script being shown. Apart from this, Hirani and Abhijat Joshi are clearly trying to take the whole credit of the story as Bhagat's name is not mentioned in Story and Screenplay credits shown in the beginning of the film.

Slumdog Millionaire was a modified adaptation of Vikas Swarup' s Q & A. But when the film received an Award,Danny Boyle called each and every cast and the Novelist Vikas Swarup on the stage to receive the Oscar and also acknowledged him in whole heartedly. This is their culture and what these three idiots(Aamir,Raju,Vidhu Vinod) did is India's Naked and Barbaric Face. I agree that Aamir is one of the Versatile Actors but,I also agree that he is the most credit hungry actor.

i think the story of book was better than the film, i saw the film first then read the book but raju has modified the story beautifully and i think if book plot was to be taken than it could have not been a success

If i were a hirani, i would have displayed cheat bhagat's name in front of movie as like holly wood movies and given due credit to him as per the global standard. Book and movie are very different from each other, that is where the problem lies. When an author of a novel sees that the movie made on it does not match his story, he is obviously hurt. There are certain instances from the novel that have been included in the movie, and that's all, and this is what pissed Chetan Bhagat. Actually, the contract between the two parties was itself faulty. It should not have been written there that the movie is based on the novel, but that certain aspects of/in the movie have been taken from the novel, and not the entire novel itself; or that the movie is 'inspired' by the novel, and not 'based on' the novel. Since this did not happen, that's why the controversy arose. As someone who has both read the novel and seen the movie, I was definitely disappointed when I compared both of them. But watching the movie alone, while remembering some scenes from the novel here and there, I was impressed with the movie.

Aamir may be a good actor but Shah Rukh is better than Aamir as a person as an individual and also is more spontaneous than Aamir. yes u are right,the novel came first and the movie makers have very intelligently kept the storyline different so that no one could question them !!
but in reality they have cheated Bhagat,as he never knew that the movie would be such a success earning 200+cr but u pay him 10lacs😠😠 those who have read the novel would know that some of the scenes are directly picked from the novel , even the dialogues are word to word copied!! Even the scenes which are different are somewhat inspired from the novel😠!

For a billionaire like Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra,it was easy to buy rights of 5 point someone in some 10-15 Lakhs.
But it was difficult for Raju and Vidhu Vinod Chopra to wholeheartedly acknowledge Chetan' s work.
As doing so would have taken the camera away from Aamir Khan,who was posing as an idiot.

once the rights have been bought, you have no right over its adaptation of the film. a film and a book are two different media. and adaptation occurs only when you want to make it the way YOU want to make it. there are many songs which are adapted and made into their own too. i am not talking about stealing , but adapting a particular tune. for which rights a first purchased by the ones who want to remake it. your opinion is not completely truthful. thanks.
