    I'm very happy to have found your channel, here trying to figure out what to start growing, new aspiring gardener. For the papayas you can try to pick a green, cut it like potatoes for a stew, is great. Thank you for all the good info.

    I'm so happy to have found your channel!!! Finally a You tuber that lives close to me....someone who understands this crazy weather here. How did you get your mulberry to fruit? Ive had the same tree and it is struggling...I havent seen a single fruit

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yay! Floridians unite! I'm so happy you found it! On the mulberry tree... compost and mulch, lots of sun, and it seems to like a prune because it fruits on the new/soft stem branches. Also the first 18 months... mine gave very few berries and then we hit spring and BAM! Do you see any fruit on your mulberry now... it should have some small ones that are tiny and have the white "flowers" on them. Also how do your leaves look most of the year? Nice dark green? Bright green? Chewed up by pests? Right now it may look meh due to the cold depending on the type.

    These are all great information. Thank you! We are in the Naussa County, FL and have been planting different vegetables and fruits over this spring (2022) and have started to noticed what is best to grow and what not to grow in our area. Our conclusion is to grow less maintenance greens and fruits; mulberry, sweet potato, papayas, okra, mints, sage, bananas, and many different tropical trees in our urban homestead.

    HI. You inspired me to write down what we grew thus year. We saved $1300 this year😁. I do have a bit more land but not much time so we went for easy grow. Sweet potatoe, banana, longevity spinach, sisso spinach, herbs,. Other than bananas drangon fruit was a big producer also black sapote and paypya overload. I bought cassava this year and really like it. The true yams are really good too. My mulberry had a fungus so that was a no go.I hope you inspire others to grow more food. Blessings for the new year. Oh and I dehydrated green papaya in chunks for potato substitute and blended some to use as a meat tenderizer.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WOOOOOOOW!!!! $1300! I love it! What amazing savings! And what great crops! Bummer about the mulberry, but all the other plants were such amazing wins! 😄 Thank you for the papaya idea, I had never heard of using it as a potato substitute or a meat tenderizer. Wishing you the best in the new year! And can't wait to hear how much you grow in 2021!

    Last summer I had winter squash (Georgia Roaster), it did very well with pumpkins. Next year, I'm planting butternut squash because you can add it to lots of stuff. Working on planting 13 fruit trees and 3 grape vines as a sustainable investment for the future.. I look at it like this: I grow squash and corn to have food stored away and not be forced into standing in line for a box of food like you see on the TV. I'm in zone 6B and eat well in the summer months.

    Papaya can certainly be added to smoothies with your bananas. Dried papaya is a really tasty snack, and drying it extends the length of time it can be used. Dried papaya is also expensive so it would be super impressive on your list of money saving plants.

    Great video! We're in Central Florida also and have similar experiences. For berries, we have blackberry vines that produce really well when we prune them back as we should. Definitely look into them, they do really well for us. I too am interested in what to do with papayas. Other than eating fresh and smoothies, I am not sure what to do with them and they produce a lot! The comment on dried papayas sounded great so I will need to look into how to do it. Thanks for sharing and happy gardening!

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Janet! I'll definitely have to check out blackberry vines. Now to find a space for them 🤪 Our papaya is growing and producing so much! 90 pounds already... 😂 We have been doing stir fry with fully ripe and curry and masala. We also used it to substitute the frozen strawberries in our smoothie. Honestly we are having to put them into everything because they are just coming so fast now that it is warming up. Happy Spring Gardening to you neighbor! 😄

    So far gardening in Florida if had to depend on it to survived I would have died. I did everything wrong. So I am going to try again. I am weeding the raised beds now. They went to horrible weeds, rabbits ate my garden. Even my three banana trees. I love your channel. I want to garden so bad. I did the one year have great cherry tomatoes that were volunteer, sweet potatoes, mustard greens. The rest not so much. Onions not so good. You encouraged me to try again. We will put up a fence so the domestic rabbits that get lose from somewhere do not eat my garden. Brought a cage to give to neighbor if I catch them. They were his to begin with but he says they are not. He raises them and chickens.

    Thanks for the inspiration! I think I'll have to track our harvests. This season looks like it'll be my best yet (10b, Broward county). Btw, dehydrated papaya is delicious! Either cubed, or as fruit leather. I also like to make papaya lassi (Indian drink with yogurt, traditionally made with mango).

    Love your videos. I'm really inspired but in my subdivision we use reclaimed water for irrigation therefore, we can't eat anything grown in the soil. What size container would you use to grow sweet potatoes?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so excited that you loved my videos! Don't lose your inspiration... mine is on reclaim too. I push boundries but here is from UF/IFAS on the topic:
      Is reclaimed water safe for irrigating my vegetable garden? The Florida Department of Environmental Protection states that reclaimed water should NOT be directly applied to the surfaces of vegetables or other edible crops that are not peeled, cooked, or thermally processed before being consumed.
      This is why I started with Fruit trees since there was not direct application. Everything but leafy greens gets thermally processed (i.e. cooked) at my house. Hope that sparks the inspiration again!
      On sweet potatoes you can go as small as a 5 gallons or bigger. So it will depend more on your space and how much you want to grow 😄

    So the math.. are you taking into account all of the hardware, soil, mulch, seeds/plants, water, electric, labor, etc...

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love that you ask! No, I just did a cost avoidance of grocery purchase. I have evaluated holistically how much I spend on the garden versus outputs but it can become diluted when some purchases were made when it was a hobby and some are for the native plants which aren't meant to have a financial return on investment. Also I have considered differences of behavior growing food versus not growing food, i.e. water cost does not change since it is on the lawn irrigation that would have been running if I hadn't been growing food. Electric... $0, I don't use electric equipment for any of the projects. Labor cost... $priceless... LOL... quality time with the family can not be offset by someones labor cost. When it comes to the hardware, year one costs are always high but then get offset in later years...this is why I try to do videos where I explain cost of items such as the cattle panel trellis or must have items. But I love love that you ask! Someday I'm thinking of doing something more comprehensive but decided for now I would keep it simple.
