first watched this in 2007. planted my backyard and front yard garden in 2008 and haven't looked back. thank you dervaes family. you changed my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This family's story changed our lives! We've completely overhauled our house into an Urban Farm. I hope this video inspires others to do the same thing! Growing your own food REALLY is the doorway to freedom.
I especially liked the message at the end about how we have to change and be responsible ourselves instead of waiting for someone else to do it for us.
I have seen this garden before in some other documentary. I am in awe of the vigor and productivity that soars miles above what a regular farm could ever do. I too live in an urban desert but i have finally found my Eden 5 years ago, abandoned, overgrown, derelict buildings, poor, poor soil. Even grass had a hard time there, 10 miles away and while it has not reached it's peak of productivity yet, a lot of my food comes from it and in the last year i have quadrupled my yield. It took me 3 years of clearing and amending to get anything going there. I definitely feel you. I share it with my new friend who showed up at my fence with a dream of food security and shook hands. We now work together to make it a better place. I'm so grateful for him and the simple joy of friendship he brought to my life. The freshness of the food made such a difference healthwise. You can taste it. No matter what anyone says. I guess they have never had fresh food before. Not just organic. Fresh! That chef is a lucky man! Gosh, that looks delicious!
I think it is more important to meet people like this family all over, than meeting this specific family, my deepest respect for them same way, and for everybody making a change we have been idiotized and we´ve lost our ancestor´s knowledge in 2 or 3 generations...
this is the living words of buckminster fuller - “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” just look at what we gain and not what we lose if we choose to embody these values , truly transformative!
So well done for you and your family! I live in northern Arizona with myself, my wife, and two small children. We bought a piece of land and started farming it in 2011. It gets better each season as we focus on building soil. It would do our nation well if more of us started growing our own food. The feeling of power and self dependence is overwhelming and...well...POWERFUL. I am inspired by your work on your small plot. Way to make a real step to freedom! Peace...Jim in Prescott, Arizona
When I lived in Spain, every day you could see small plots with vegetables growing inside the cities. You would see farmers riding their mopeds to deliver fresh-grown vegetables to restaurants and homes. Food was fresh and immediate. I still remember how great salad tasted when the lettuce was only a few hours out of the field. It wasn't a revolution, it was a way of life. There is another way to live.
Amazing. You don't need a masters degree to do these. You can learn by reading, listening watching and learning from people who did it. This is really great. I hope i can apply this in my home country and try to reeducate our community to go back to basic and i know we can do it. I will show this video to our town officials and the community so we can have a sustainable life not depending on anybody else but our own. God bless you guys, thank you for opening our minds to something spectacular.
This is inspiring. My husband and I have wanted to homestead for years, but were always held back by the fear of leaving a comfortable corporate career. However, we have learned that this lifestyle can never fulfill our yearning for true freedom. Wish us luck as we begin this journey and move forward towards self reliance and inner satisfaction.
My husband quit his job and helped me expand my Ebay store. We bought an RV and have been spending the past few months paying off our debt, preparing our home to be rented, and retrofitting our motorhome. Now we are going to travel for a while and see the country (off grid camping, of course!). Thanks for asking :)
I think, if you are good professionals, you will be able to find a job again in the case of real need. You can always go back, but you would regret later if you had never tried to change your life as you wished. So, in my opinion, you did the right thing when decided to give a try for your dream! Good luck to you!
I am actually being moved to tears by your inspirational video. This is the way forward. We all need to understand that the state as it is will not help - it doesn't want individuality or allowing its citizens choice on what they eat. Dig the lawn!
This is so very inspiring! Not only has this dear family made their home their primary food source, but they've created a place of such beauty and creativity as well.
Jules Dervaes, Justin Dervaes, Anais Dervaes and Jordanne Dervaes. Thank you for sharing your story it has inspired me to start my own homestead here in phoenix arizona. Thank you guys and God Bless!)
your stories have really taought me something. i am about to turne 15 and for my birthday i wished to start a big garden and get a few chickens. i have always been intersted in farming and u people have really inspiered me jules is seriously the pearson i want to be like when i am older.
Beautiful family...blessed with each other. Our food in the U.S. is no longer safe to eat. Look at the increase in cancers. Pesticide poisoning. This family is so healthy and happy. The knowledge attained through this families trials and errors is worth more than gold. Thank you for this video.
Thank you very much for the video! I have been growing my own vegetables and making 80% of my own food. This is the way people should live and learn to do everything by themselves too. Be healthy!
I'm simply embarrassed and proud in tge same time of my fellow humans! I'm building 15 feet dome greenhouse with aqusponic system. Currently we have small summer garden. Thanks for showing the way! AWSOME stuff!
Inspiring! This takes the best ideas of permaculture and really makes it work on another level. Greetings from another urban (semi) homestead in Africa!
I love this family...they are so simple, down to earth & enjoying so natural life..that's why their faces glow with natural & genuine innocence......I like the last sentence of head of the family "Change begins with me"...........Excellent sir
thanks thanks for this guys! We are in the process to make our place a homestead. If any of you ever come to Brazil, please visit us and stay for a few days =)
WOW!! Amazing Dervaes family!! So inspirational... I'm looking forward to starting my raised-bed, drip-irrigation garden this spring... I will be using for the Square Foot Garden method- and will be buying my rough cut lumber from a local sawmill... "Be the change you wish to see in the world" Mahatma Gandhi
Just more proof that the saying its not what you think but what you DO that can change your environment. Love this family thank you for sharing yourselves with us.
Been dreaming of homesteading for years and years already. I still feel lost still no matter how many books I read. And there's still the 9-5 grind. I think homesteading really is one of those things you need to pour everything into if you want it to be successful, otherwise you're just going to end up with a tiny corner in the backyard, which we did. Unless Im missing something.
We didn't have the homestead overnight. We started with one project and a few plants and built from there. Just having a few is a great start. In time, you'll be able to have your own successful homestead. Just one step at a time, you've got this!
Well done sir! I'm an old hippie too, but have due to circumstances been totally ON the grid. I'm setting a new goal this year and hopefully this year will get my garden in. I used to have a raised bed garden for years and since my divorce etc not so much but next year things are a changing!! hopefully with the help of God I'll be able to have some home grown produce next season!
Love it. This used to be called "normal house" back at home (and 15-20 years ago). Glad to it popping up so close to LA and other places in the US! More people need to wake up!
and Monsanto says that farmers couldn't grow enough food , even though Monsanto underbid the farmers with their modified foods and the fresh set and spoiled for lack of buyers that eventually put most out of business! This mentality has been stuffed in our brains to make a few rich while putting thousands out of house and businesses... not to mention more stomach ailments, cancers , tumors, etc.…...! These folks are Relearning an old way of those that grew on islands , rocky coasts , deserts , etc.... awesome!!!!
use the Derveas as an inspiration for personal change and development. but don't stop there, share your knowledge and your own passion to inspire those around you to change as well. it can be done and should be done, we just need to smash the walls that were so cleverly built around us that now act as blindfolds.
I love this family's way of life, I have followed them for many years. I love plants of all types and have grown much of our veggies, herbs, and edible flowers for many years. We make our bread, herbed vinigars, butters, etc. Love this way of life. I have been very fortunate to have been raised in Kentucky and taught many things about homesteading. Once you love plants and growing your food, it never leaves your blood. you are hooked for life!!
Man, oh, man. I wish you guys had a full length film I could show to our town council. I'd love to implement some of the same ordinances that allow your family to do what you do. Thank God for the Dervaes family.
Strong family bonding, which is strength for a father to revunalize things around. Salute to the father and his offerings, for middle of warzone to mobilize people to against forces those are harming our food security !!
Thank you. Several months ago, I began waking up to what is happening with our food and our society. I find I can no longer pretend that our food is safe. I live in suburbia usa and am planning my first front yard garden this spring.. Thank you for the inspiration of what is possible!!!
I grew up in Altadena during the 60-70's. What you guys are doing is absolutely awesome. I wish that (while he was still alive) Anthony Bourdain could have visited you, and share with the rest of the world what you guys are doing! You are the best of Pasadena! Peace and love...Dan.
FANTASTIC! Thank you Dervaes Family. You are a great inspiration to people like me. I am an artist this is what I have been working towards for my whole life. I also live in the city where every square inch of my yard space is used.
I love this and want to do this as well. Graduating college this year and I feel funny sharing my idea of having a homestead with other students who dream of working in a more urban setting. I can't wait to start my revolution of freedom.
You'd be surprised how many students think the way you do. I had a friend get into college teaching organic farming and it was a HUGE class. Ask around...
Catherine Guay yeahh maybe if I talk about it more it will help other people with similar ideas to open up as well. I tell people that I want to WWOOF which is an international program to volunteer at organic farms. Some people get it and others think its just not necessary since we can just buy things.
almost unbelievable what you have accomplished...I plan on sharing your videos with everyone i know that thinks they need to have acres and acres to be more self sufficient
What a beautiful and inspiring example of "stewardship of the earth". Imagine the possibilities of homestead villages around the world. Please keep making these videos, they are truly a blessing!!
I hope these girls have learned from their Dad and know how lucky they are they have a Dad that cares about his family and what they eat. This is so awesome!!!
I have been so inspired by this video ... Let me explain why. I live in South Africa and bought a country home with a beautiful large piece of ground in a very small little town, a, larger than normal garden, all under grass (at the moment). I will soon be changing that into a fertile organic vegetable garden when I retire next year . All my life I have been a keen organic gardener but has never had the opportunity (or space) to have my own vegetable garden (with chickens :)). I will be starting my own organic vegetable and berry garden, and I can't wait. I will be growing passion fruit and a variety of other exotic fruits. I am also privileged for I have my very own vineyard right on my doorstep. The area where I bought my home is a very dry and hot (in the summer) region but also has extreme winter temperatures. In the beginning I felt a bit overwhelmed as I will be starting and doing everything on my own, but you have left me feeling inspired to know - it is all possible . Thank you so very much.
You have to claim your own freedom and not rely on others. We have a large Garden as well but live in Canada where it's marginal for growing. But for those living in the south of USA they should all be doing this . great Video ,inspiring .
Great film! Thank you for the encouragement!!! I have just moved to where I hope to do the same thing. This has been a dream of mine for many years. I am here now. God Bless You All!
Thats a great home. Lots of work for sure. I grew up in a village in eastern Europe where everyone is self-sufficient except for sugar and oil. Big blocks with massive gardens which sustain families up to 10 ppl and animals (we had around 60 birds (+ 50 pigeon families), 2 pigs, some have goats and many have cows that go to common pastures during the day. Same with sheep but catered by village shepherd.) Great area management though.. Congratulations. If everyone did this we wouldnt have hunger in this world.
Thank you so much for sharing this film with us. I am a man that in the past year has had an awakening. I have been a staunch right wing live for the moment kind of guy. I always assume the food will be in the store and water will flow from my tap and the lights will come on. My wife and I are simplifying our lives and you are a true inspiration.
What a pleasure to see something that I've always heard could work , and to see how you guys have made it work ,and grow so amazingly. Thank you so much for the hope and drive and brilliance that you have . I want to see if my brother can have you guys visit here in Georgia .
This is incredible. People need to be empowered with this sort of information and inspiration. I live in Canada too but am going to make a go of it ; -)
I am really inspired to this video and hope to replicate what the Dervaes family did in such a small area - an amazing transformation of small homestead into a magical organic food garden.
You are a great inspiration and a statement to all that you don't have to be out in the country to live this way. You are a statement to all those in the city like myself that we don't have to put this on hold and day dream. We can take advantage of what we have and use it to its full potential.... although you guys took that to an extreme.
first watched this in 2007. planted my backyard and front yard garden in 2008 and haven't looked back. thank you dervaes family. you changed my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jules Dervaes, rest in peace ... Your teaching must be multiplied to the world ...

KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER! This is how life should be!

we have been idiotized and we´ve lost our ancestor´s knowledge in 2 or 3 generations...
A film over 10 years old, but it's relevance is still just as important today.

I think this is THE most inspiring story I have ever heard. Thank you!
This dad is awesome. You can see where his kids got their positive attitudes from ❤
Amazing, may God bless this family and all those who touched with them.
My heart aches for this so badly. We're so close.
I love that family! I want to live just like them.
This man is a magician--has to be the most beautiful yard I have ever seen!
Thank you for presenting the amazing, wonderful and Earnest Americans! 💞👊✌😁

Thanks so much!
I love this family and what they have done. What an inspiration.
Great video to help understand many options for self sufficiency. Thanks so much for this, keep up the great work, and spreading the word!
You have to claim your own freedom and not rely on others.
We have a large Garden as well but live in Canada where it's marginal for growing.
But for those living in the south of USA they should all be doing this .
great Video ,inspiring .
Simply wonderful and highly inspiring !
Great film! Thank you for the encouragement!!! I have just moved to where I hope to do the same thing. This has been a dream of mine for many years. I am here now. God Bless You All!
Wow! you guys are amazing! love this video! I want to be like you guys!
It's a lot of work but well worth the effort! Blessings on your endeavor!!!!
Let's stop with growing lawn everywhere! Plant something useful!

Hello it was wonderful meeting you all and Singing there!
What a pleasure to see something that I've always heard could work , and to see how you guys have made it work ,and grow so amazingly. Thank you so much for the hope and drive and brilliance that you have . I want to see if my brother can have you guys visit here in Georgia .
We do travel if arrangements can be made :) We were in Atlanta in 2007 giving a workshop and presentation.
Stunning family and a true inspiration. well done guys (and gals)....
This is incredible. People need to be empowered with this sort of information and inspiration. I live in Canada too but am going to make a go of it ; -)
I am really inspired to this video and hope to replicate what the Dervaes family did in such a small area - an amazing transformation of small homestead into a magical organic food garden.
Bless you! Keep on going even stronger!
You are a great inspiration and a statement to all that you don't have to be out in the country to live this way. You are a statement to all those in the city like myself that we don't have to put this on hold and day dream. We can take advantage of what we have and use it to its full potential.... although you guys took that to an extreme.
Thank you for inspiring so many people to make positive changes, you guys and gals are awesome we need more people like yall in this country
