This may be heresy to some, but I ended up scaling most 4:3 systems to 8:7 and in some cases setting to integer scaling with overscale and completely filling up the RGB30 screen with that crisp integer scaling. Love it!
I tried this a bit too. It works well with some games and not so well with others. For me it all depends on how much information gets cropped from the overscale!

Always appreciate the feedback. I guess trend setter will probably end up being a more accurate description than game changer! I think we will see more 1:1 screen devices soon!
I bought my RGB30 last month, and right out of the bat I was having severe battery issues with it. It couldn't hold a charge, It wouldn't charge properly. I tried everything and nothing worked, until I decided to install ArkOS. All those issues went away, and I'm really enjoying the device now. Battery life is amazing, very little loss on stand by.
I think the only reason you don't have over 100.000 subs yet is that you only release videos every few months. The quality put into those reviews blows every other channel out of the water.
If the RGB30 didn't have the battery hang issues it would be my favorite, but having to open it up and unplug the battery every other time I play it kills the joy.
The visual quality of this device is actually awesome. Great video. As i only play original handheld games on cartridge this is not for me. But I absolutely see the apeal of this for many people👍
Yeah, same here blown away by the vibe you create, it's so inspiring and reminds me of another creator GxAce but in the best way possible, retro handheld of course. Would love to see more of it!
The only problem with the RGB30 is that you have to buy two of them once you realize how good it is. No RBG30 downtime is acceptable. Beautfil presentaton. I can really tell you took your time making this one. Keep this style and watch your sub count grow!
This was an extremely well produced video with a lot of great points covered about this device. Given that this is only one month old though, I have to say that it os inexcusable to omit the issues with the battery that this device has had. I understand that there has been plenty of solutions provided for this issue, but to not even mention it in your review?! In all sincereity; for shame. When googling issues with this device, the battery problems are at the top of the list. Please put out another video at least mentioning this major issue that many people have considered a deal-breaker. That all said, I still am in awe of your production skills. This video is head and shoulders above the others I've seen in terms of quality. You truly have a gift for this type of work. Just please make sure you do your research right to keep your viewers fully informed. Cheers and long life!
Thanks for the kind words! I didnt experience any battery issues during my time with the device. I did a reddit search after reading your comment and the results seem mixed depending on the operating system. I try to stick to my experience with the device as much as possible and believe that viewers should be checking out multiple sources when it comes to getting an opinion on a device. I don’t think I’ll probably ever cover every single pro and con a device may have but I will always give my thoughts and experiences.
@matt_HM I can respect that approach. I would just say that even if you are unsure if something is a problem or not, if many people are saying it is, and the problem itself would be significant, there's nothing wrong with mentioning it in passing as something for your viewers to look into.

Aside from the RG Cube from Anbernic, there's also the A1 Unicorn from ZPG which was teased first earlier this year. And now we have news of the R40S, a true RGB30 clone starting to show up in Aliexpress.
If i wanted a dedicated device for arcade shooters then this would be my choice for a solid budget option. That or Pico 8! The Anbernic Cube is a higher end device thats also worth checking out but i haven’t yet so I cant really say if its worth the extra money!
Well put together. I love my RGB30. One thing you can do is stretch the resolution a bit to get rid of the black space. Doesn't have to be full stretch, but even a little makes a difference. LIke PSP for example.
A pleasure to view such beutiful review. The visuals are so nice. For arcade and SEGA I'm also using forced 8:7 aspect ratio with integer scaling on and crt-lotte-fast shader. This way it takes 90% of the screen but a bit vertically stretched which is a trade-off I'm willing to deal with.
Glad to see you back! Great video as always. This is a device that I was really interested in, but I don't really have the disposable income right now to make the purchase. Hopefully by the time Anbernic's version comes out things will be better, because Anbernic's quality is a bigger selling point when compared to Powkiddy's to me.
Thanks!! Yeah i think the best we can hope for is that other companies see the consumer demand for handhelds like this and find ways to improve upon it!
Hi Matt. Your video was incredible and I loved the production value and the information of the RGB30. I wanted to recommend some GBA games since I have quite a few. I definitely recommend any of the Super Mario Bros Advance games. I also recommend games like Metal Slug Advance, Iridion 2, Gunstar Super Heroes, Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, Konami Krazy Racers, Double Dragon Advance, Final Fight One, Gradius Galaxies, Megaman & Bass and Contra Advance. Sorry for the long list but there are so many great GBA games out there. I really want the RGB30 because I enjoy retro console & arcade games.
Yeah I'll not be original by saying - those B rolls - Man great visuals - with great progression - no sudden - low focus high dopamine hitting fast changes - Very smooth and enjoyable to watch. +1
It is a goal of mine to not fall into the Mr. Beast style of editing and flow that is so pervasive on youtube. My hope is that the quality of whats on screen is enough to captivate. Time will tell if this is a smart strategy. But i am very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!!
The screen really is good, to the point where I wondered if it were OLED. Even after I got a Steamdeck OLED I wondered because it has very vibrant colors and deep blacks. A great little system for the price with some caveats about the build quality being a little questionable in some areas. Also I suggest a slightly taller aspect ratio on PSP games they can look like the GBA size without looking too stretched.
Awesome video, bro. You should really try Russ's (Retro Game Corps) suggestion on SNES for this device, using IS overscale just crops a couple pixels on each side (Barely noticeable) and it gives you almost full screen, on this device is amazing, crisp pixels, bright colors and an amazing experience overall. Playing SNES is what I use this device the most, that and Pico-8 which is also perfect.
I added the PS1 games i wanted and a lot more GB games and have been very satisfied. I had paid extra for preloaded ROMs and was sort of baffled over the choices on there and things left out. Im not very tech savvy and can see this system might be difficult for less tech savvy people to handle. It took me quite awhile to get all the settings the way I want them and add all the roms I wanted. But the system feels great in my hands, plays great and battery life is great AFTER i reduced brightness to about 65 percent
For me, the RGB30 is a love/hate relationship. I love the screen, it's amazing, and love the square ratio 720p screen, makes integer scaling so much better for pretty much all emulated consoles. BUT... like you said, it has a cheap feeling, and also bad ergonomics, at least for my hands, it feel awkward holding it after a while. But the things I HATE : The buttons....they are way too hard to press and uncomfortable, they have a ''hard edge'' especially the d-pad, it kinda hurts my thumb after a while, and its frustrating to press. For this reason, it usually sits on my desk and I don't pick it up... Instead I pick up my Miyoo Mini Plus, or my Ayn Odin 2 (which is perfect, but not as portable)
This is probably a generic answer but Poom is just downright impressive! I really need to do a deep dive into Pico 8 games and find some hidden gems. If you have recommendations let me know!!
I love the size of the screen, but I will say that the 720P resolution is kind of wasted on this. You can’t really upscale any Dreamcast, N64 or psp to 720p on it. I would love for this thing to have just a little bit more power and have a touchscreen.
Agree with your points. I tried 'upgrading' one rgb30 to arkos, but the install/upgrade seems to have bricked the device. Had to buy another as I love the screen, will stick with Jelos. $65 from aliexpress. Wish it was a bit more comfortable because my large hands. Also had to tape d-pad connections, needed for tetris dx, my favorite. Subscribed too
JELOS was succeeded by ROCKNIX and is worked on by mostly the same people. It's not too big of a deal that JELOS halted development. GBA has a ton of great games. One of my favorite consoles/handhelds. There are the big NES/SNES ports like Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Donkey Kong Country. Mega Man Battle Network is really good. Mega Man Zero is like an improved Mega Man X. There were ports of the lower-numbered Final Fantasy games, I think 1 through 6 (3 might only be on DS, not sure). Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which is not exactly a port of FFT from PS1 as far as the story, but has the same game mechanics. The Sonic Advance games are decent. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen and Emerald (some still say Emerald is the best Pokemon game). The Fire Emblem games are really good. Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is one of the best Kirby games, with a metroidvania format. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is in my top 5 favorite Zelda games, there's the Mother/Earthbound series (fan translation available for Mother 3 which never came out in the US). Mr. Driller is a little bit of a hidden gem, though I'm seeing it shown off by more TH-camrs lately. Screw Breaker AKA Drill Dozer is a neat little game that used rumble in the cartridge. Sword of Mana, Lunar Legend, and Tales of Phantasia are good if you like JRPGs. Panel de Pon on GBA has become one of my favorite puzzle games, it was packaged on a 2 game cart along with Dr. Mario. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team is really fun if you like roguelites/dungeon crawlers. I've also heard the Golden Sun games are good, Starfy is supposed to be similar to Kirby, Advance Wars is a bit like Fire Emblem. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is one a lot of people like. Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. I was very tempted by the RGB30 when it came out and I saw it had a 1:1 screen, purely because I don't own anything with a 1:1 screen and it's just so unusual. It's got the same chip as my Anbernic RG353M, though, which made it a little hard to justify. Bigger screen, but not a touchscreen, the shell is plastic instead of metal. Maybe I'll pick one up later down the line. The lack of touchscreen seems like a real shame with how good the stacked DS screens look on there. If they ever refresh it with a Plus version or something, I hope they give it a touchscreen. I don't know if the unusual screen size/ratio makes that harder or if they could've just slapped a digitizer on there for a few bucks more. Really cool camera work and effects, by the way. Felt very high quality.
I wish I had that experience! I kept having an issue where it would freeze and when I restarted it, it was just a black screen. To fix it I had to put in the JelOS sd card, turn on, turn off and then put the ArkOS card back in. Super weird!
Honestly, if screens wow you so much, just buy a Trimui Smart Pro. It's selling for $55 these days, can also run up to Dreamcast/PSP, and its 5" ultra bright/saturated display blows anything out of the water. All while having weirdly high build quality
You may want to highlight downsides more, the other reviewers say that the screen is great but the controller feels really cheap. 35xx sp is coming soon, hope you review it! I'll probably get that one
I also mention the cheap feeling and compare it to the superior feeling RP2S! Unless you’re saying I should have focused on other downsides as well. Thanks for the feedback!
Nobody ever talks about the horrendous batrery and its inability to hold a charge. Thats the only thing keeping me from getting one these. I was ready to purchase and then anded up going with an rg35xx plus instead.
@@yaboirairai Anbernic is the best budget handheld by a landslide imo. I honestly use the RG35XX H more than my Analogue Pocket since I mostly care about older games (NES, SNES, and all the Gameboy stuff) and I'm not all that worried about having to replace it if it ever gets broken. The RG35XX SP releases tomorrow and I plan on grabbing one of those as well since it's the exact same thing, just in a clamshell form.
Great video ! Do you work as a pro videographer aside of youtube ? About GBA games i would advise : Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, a great rpg with top pixelart ( the 1 and 2 HP are also good if you like the movies ) .
Yeah there are definitely flaws! Here’s to hoping that someone decides to make an improved iteration or similar console! (RG Cube??)
Perfect video editing!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for checking it out!
Absolute Cinema 😌
Thanks for watching!!
GBA must plays:
Zelda Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, Advance Wars, The Fire Emblem games.
Besides Advance Wars.. believe it or not, I have never tried any of those! Excited to check them out!
Nice video. What are your favorite Pico-8 games?
This is probably a generic answer but Poom is just downright impressive! I really need to do a deep dive into Pico 8 games and find some hidden gems. If you have recommendations let me know!!
Awesome video, love your style!
What a great looking video
Glad you think so!
RGB10 MAX 3 is in this price range. Go with that or the powkiddy x55 also in this price range. Load up with latest rocknix and your set.
I'd be interested in what you think about the Anbernic Cube and how it compares to the RGB30.
Im hoping to review that one too!
I love the size of the screen, but I will say that the 720P resolution is kind of wasted on this. You can’t really upscale any Dreamcast, N64 or psp to 720p on it. I would love for this thing to have just a little bit more power and have a touchscreen.
Great points! I hope we see more iterations on this idea by other companies!
HELL YEAH! HE'S BACK!!
Can I make more than 6 videos in 2024?? We're gonna find out haha!
What is the best handheld for fighting games?
Gus-ODool 9000
Agree with your points. I tried 'upgrading' one rgb30 to arkos, but the install/upgrade seems to have bricked the device. Had to buy another as I love the screen, will stick with Jelos. $65 from aliexpress. Wish it was a bit more comfortable because my large hands. Also had to tape d-pad connections, needed for tetris dx, my favorite. Subscribed too
Thanks!! Yeah thats a bummer :(
JELOS was succeeded by ROCKNIX and is worked on by mostly the same people.
These recommendations are very appreciated hehe!
Slick gxace action!
He’s the master! I’m just learning along the way and he is a massive inspiration.
No issues with ArkOS here. Flawless for me.
I wish I had that experience! I kept having an issue where it would freeze and when I restarted it, it was just a black screen. To fix it I had to put in the JelOS sd card, turn on, turn off and then put the ArkOS card back in. Super weird!
@@matt_HM Did you install the base OS from a year or two ago and then update to the latest?
This is so refreshing next to all the greasy dudes making low-production videos on these handhelds. Well done!
Doing my best to stay clean!
Honestly, if screens wow you so much, just buy a Trimui Smart Pro. It's selling for $55 these days, can also run up to Dreamcast/PSP, and its 5" ultra bright/saturated display blows anything out of the water. All while having weirdly high build quality
It's on my list! With that aspect ratio it won't be as godd for Pico 8 and some other games but will definitely be great for PSP games!
its got the same range as my R36S so im not too much into changing but sure, if had nowhere to play this would be great
Thanks for watching!!
Oh, watched again, u're right. YT shorts is rotting away my attention span 🙈
Adding video sections would probably help my monkey brain
Serious 2ds vibes from this handheld. And that's a good thing 😁
Nice video :) What's that game at :35 ?
That's Final Fantasy VII for the Sony Playstation! I was just flying around in the airship lol.
Nobody ever talks about the horrendous batrery and its inability to hold a charge. Thats the only thing keeping me from getting one these.
I was ready to purchase and then anded up going with an rg35xx plus instead.
How is the anbernic treating you? I am in the same boat as you were and considering the rg35xx-h
I do hate how finicky it is to charge. These companies need to invest in better tech so i can use basic usb-c to usb-c charging cables!
what theme are you using with emulation station
JelOS is now ROCKNIX. It got forked and is being developed under a new name.
Great video !
Do you work as a pro videographer aside of youtube ?
About GBA games i would advise :
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, a great rpg with top pixelart ( the 1 and 2 HP are also good if you like the movies ) . Vrally 3 : the best looking rally GBA games, very fun to play . Street fighter Alpha 3, Tony hawks, Astro boy, advance war .
Hey thanks!! Nah I just do youtube as a hobby, learning as I go. Dude thanks for the suggestions! I haven’t tried any of the HP games on GBA so I’ll have to check em out! Same with VRally!
What's the handheld all the way to the right at 0:23
That's the Anbernic RG35XX modded with Playstation themed face buttons! I have a review on my channel!
@@matt_HM oh nice, thank you!
@@matt_HM Oh nice, thank you! I'll check it out.
Can it do SEGA Saturn Shmups?
I believe so. If you noticed, I didn't include any Saturn footage in the video because I was having issues with my roms. So I don't have much experience with the Saturn on the RGB30 yet.
