Just because you think someone is “famous” and everyone already knows them, doesn’t mean it’s true. However you are now helping introduce that person and their ideologies to people who might have genuinely been fortunate enough to not know who they were or what they believe before you gave them a platform.
By this logic even covering the trial does that. At a certain point you have to allow that people will make their minds up for themselves, and your duty as a journalist would be to push back on the points you think they are wrong about and let the chips fall where they may. There is a price to never engaging with these people too, on certain parts of the web it's common to see the take of "if Alex (or insert other controversial figure here) is so wrong why doesn't someone address their arguments instead of nothing but adhom/strawmanning?" and the whole "not wanting to platform" thing backfires.
