This is cool. A simple DIY project to have fun with. The beauty of it is the way it gets you thinking. Like the others here, I kept thinking of ways to improve the design and how I would do it differently. Any video that makes you think in a positive and fun way is a great video!
Just a thought: Perhaps you could attach inexpensive plastic bowls to front ends of your pontoons to form watertight domes. This might significantly decrease drag and increase speed. Nice work and good video 👍
Snap a lid on the bucket, and install a pressure fitting. Heat the bottom of the bucket with a heat gun, and pressurize the bucket with a compressor. The result will be a nice rounded bottom on the bucket. It will also increase it's flotation because the buckets will then be bigger. An alternate method would just be a heat gun, and a capped piece of pvc mounted vertical. Heat the bottom of the bucket, and push it down onto the pvc in the center. Will give more of a V shape versus a round shape like air pressure would but anything is better than flat.
I’ve read most of the comments and the only thing I could add is to insure when gluing pvc together, use must also use cleaner. The cleaner starts melting the pvc, but the glue makes for sliding together easy and fills in the gaps and the extra glue settles in the lowest point to form a smooth trough. This is a great project and is not the final design. The problem with showing people progress on a project, and I'm not talking about the builder, I am talking about the people who have no idea what it takes to "develop" something... they expect a Ranger bass boat right out of the gate.
The Frugal Fly Rodder No we don’t. We expect nothing and give freely of our intellect and advice. Screws don’t make sense in this when cement and primer would have done the job better AND air tight. I mean the stuffs like 5 bucks for the cement and primer.
@@chloehennessey6813, He used screws because he said he would be using the fittings for other projects. Also, the buckets are the floats and not the pipes so if water gets in the pipes the water would drip out somewhere else.
I found this only because it was one of the many random videos that TH-cam plants in my feed. I like the whole concept of putting a boat of your own creation on the water like this, something that is very non-traditional. Kudos and keep up the good work!
Not bad for an off hand build. Room for improvements. Gives me ideas. Thank you! But batteries open to waves or splash? Made me shiver a little at that. But still looks like a fun fast build that is relatively cheap for a toy of this type. Well done!
Great innovative idea! Your making a fishing barge tho, it’s not gonna be a speedster, so make it a little wider & a little longer, (1) loose the extra barrels in back, (2) build a platform behind the seat for a milk crate/rod holders, batteries, (3) turn all barrels sideways for less resistance , consider using 55gal plastic drums, & above all, whatever you decide , use pvc glue instead of screws! Add lights on a pvc rail & it would make a fantastic floundering barge. Shalom!
I suggest buying some large dollar store plastic bowls and gluing the on the front and back of each bucket. You'll be far more streamlined plus get some extra bouyancy without adding much weight.
Suggestion. Move batteries to the back which will help level out the plain. Thu also allowing a opportunity ti design a tackle box working area. I've seen similar designs where foam has been used to fill flotation cavities. Looks like a fun and functional project.
Suggestion that may help. Use the 4 inch PVC lower in the water, Higher post seat swivel boat seat, Put batteries in plastic battery boxes with lids. No plywood required. The 4 inch pipe helps with flotation and reduces weight. I can run a 12 foot boat with 1 battery, you should be fine with one on that. Maybe some plastic fins on the bucket to split the water, reduce flat push of the water. FYI a plastic 55 barrel will support 500 US lbs in the water. But nice idea an good work

nice build! My recommendations.. Move the back center buckets to the side. The issue is the thrust from the trolling motor is lose some due to it hitting the buckets. Find some wat to put cone fronts on the buckets.... possibly add a modified bucket to each front.Slpit it and use a soldering iron to weld it back together after shaping. You can use a heat gun to make it more shapable.
1 things I would change on that amazing fishing boat to make it better. The compressed wood you used to mount the seat. They sell now flat pieces of PVC at Homedepot. Use that instead of wood to insure that seat will never rot. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to making my own in the near future.

Attach one of these (Lumax 204 oz Capacity Plastic Funnel) to the end of each bucket. Fill with closed cell expandable foam until it seals off at the end. It will make the barrels more aerodynamic (or simply plug the end with a cork, if you're worried about the toxins in the foam). The funnels are about $15 each. If you use tubing to connect all the barrels together, you should only need the funnels on the front two (or possibly front and back) barrels.
Hi Terry from Scotland, one thing for sure the pipe concept gives room for innovation both in land vehicles and water, you can make a double seated version with all sorts of additions, seal the pipe with solvent weld and make it part of the buoyancy , good job pal.
fantastic video, i am Farmer from Australia i never go out and buy machinery or anything i make it myself if it works great if it dosent to bad i have only used scrap material.
That is a very creative of you. Only a small sugestion. Maybe its better to use the two long plastic pipes instead of the bucket so you reduce the dragging of the water. Just a sugestion.

Nice idea fella . Ive read lots of comments on the obvious here but I'm sure you intended your final build the right way. After the perminent welding of your pipes pieces I would fill them with an expanding foam mix just to ad that extra structure and give. Plus it'll lose that hollow cheap feel then cast some egg shape floats and bobs your uncle. All the best
i enjoy builds like this. just a thought to lighten the load a bit; use plastic cutting boards (wal-mart) for any decking you may want and use battery boxes to secure the batteries. put the batteries in the rear or underneath of you in line. Someone mentioned plastic bowls from the dollar store that are the same width as the bucket bottoms. Fill those buckets and bowls with foam. Sweet project though. As an afterthought, put some wide wheels from a golf caddie on it and a tow handle. Have fun.

Excellent video. I know how much work it takes to edit something like this. I can’t quite tell why one end is wider than the other. I do get why you put through holes for the battery plates. For me, I would seal up all those holes plus prime and cement all my joints once assembled. Makes it WAY stronger.
Awesome build.. love it sir. I agree does need another bucket in front middle. Wrap it with fiberglass. Buckets too. Make a cone on the front and back of buckets would be cheap, cost effective and would move pretty quickly then. You could make the cones out of cardboard and wrap with fiberglass. Estimate 200 to 300$
The middle bucket is catching your propeller thrust which is applying most of the thrust into trying to push the trolling motor and bucket apart. And use more buckets to form nose cones and that will cut your overall drag way down and likely increase your speed by double if you make the suggested changes.
All replies seem to like your great idea. Everyone has there two cents to put in. Many sounded good. Ingenious idea. When you get a final design sell the patterns. I can totally see a couple of you getting together and starting a business. Patterns ( directions) first, then sell them on a sportsman shop. Well, you can dream can’t you? 🤗
Nice job. I agree with glue rather than screws. I would try 30 gal solid barrel rather than 2 pails. Need covers for the battery and a life jacket. All and all thumbs up for the idea and the drive to do it.
Another 2 5gl buckets up front for the added weight of the batteries. And you already said you need to add glue. Plus, i would spray foam the insides of the pvc pipes and buckets will make it MUCH more stable, allow for more amenities(weight) and safer if chambers flood that the foam will keep you buoyant. You gave me some ideas for sure. Cool idea. Goid job guy.
Bill Ding --- you can fill the barrels and PVC pipe with pigshit as long as that material is less heavy than water and it won't make a bit of effect on flotation
@@supergokue1 Considering the low cost of materials , and ease of construction , you may have a marketable item there . A couple rod holders and a place for a tackle box , and that's a hot setup .
I think 4 or 6 - 8' 4" sealed pvc tubes with 90's on front and a cap on back would give you better results... than those buckets... and as someone else said, get rid of those heavy batteries or calculate your center of gravity and shift them back.
Acutely for long term riding put two skids under the buckets and install five batteries in the buckets. Nice concept I could see this being very versatile with limited energy needed to go have fun. Great share thank you😌 And see put dolly wheels on that you could wheel it to any location you like without way too much effort ✌🏼️

Just a suggestion but hang frame from buckets use sealed tubes instead of screws you'll obtain better buoyancy and having the buckets turned 90 degrees to reduce drag. Fill buckets and frame with foam? Tis the season to start
Awesome idea, almost like a one man fishing pontoon. I'm sure you can make modifications now that you've put it to the test. I think this is better than a kayak because it looks very stable.I Own a ocean kayak and a perception pilot and I assure you it doesn't take much to flip a yak. Good luck with your inventions
Get some plastic bowls from the dollar store. Attach to the fronts of the buckets, to significantly reduce drag. To keep water out? Fill with spray-foam once attached.
Home depot, Lowe's buckets hate UV exposure, they go bad so fast, and become cracking, that you would be amazed. At this point I'd buy one foot or larger diameter pvc pipe, and make pontoons out of it, two loooong pontoons, filled with expanding foam, PVC glue capped, and that will give you seasons of use, especially if you paint the pontoons to cut on UV exposure

I can't think of anything to comment so I'm just going to post a Blueberry pancake recipe. 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 1/4 teaspoons white sugar 1 egg 1 cup milk 1/2 tablespoon butter, melted 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, thawed 1. In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. In a small bowl, beat together egg and milk. Stir milk and egg into flour mixture. Mix in the butter and fold in the blueberries. Set aside for 1 hour.A 2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot
i'd move the batteries behind the seat to remove the front end weight since you have more flotation in the rear. I'd also hide the cabling inside the pvc. but all in all not a bad idea.
I saw a design on junk yard wars many years ago and I thought that it was a good dyi project. They used maybe 5 55 gallon barrels for a keel with a rounded nose on the lead barrel. Then the plan was to use 2 outriggers again made from 55 gallon drums welded back to the center keel. They put an inline 4 banger in one of the barrels and ran a drive shaft to a prop through the last barrel. It was a great design. It floated and ran very fast through the water. The problem was that they ran out of time before they got the 2nd outrigger attached. It dumped the crew. That being said....your little boat looks like fun. Maybe think about the center keel with outriggers. Good luck on your next attempt.
The buckets are really cool and a stroke of genius. Lowes also has 12" PVC pipe in 20 foot sections. 12" caps and 12" X 4" T's would be able to be clear primered and glued on for extra strength and weight savings? Just a thought.
That is a cool start on a great idea, It's definitely a Builders preference type of thing though hu! LOL I might have come to the design you built on paper, but it would stayed on paper for improvements I think. Or it could be that i just saw yours and had the opportunity to shake my head where you didn't get yours till after the build. I wondered right away why you screwed it together rather than making it water tight, seems the frame would only make it more buoyant which is desirable. While making it water tight might seem more difficult in the build, seems to me it would be more than worth it. That wood used is a bad choice for sure, the osb right? Id pick a different material for that purpose. the 5 gallon Buckets. You know, that is an awesome Idea , there are other buckets that are bigger though, I have used some material from the kind of buckets you have there ( lowes specifically ) to plastic weld with. I don't know how well it works yet but I have seen welding kits at harbor freight I have been wanting to check out. they are dirty ass cheap of course as is the material. Seems to me that back pontoon on the single arm is giving you decent support and the front end is lacking. I sold a 6 HP Clinton 2 stroke motor a while back that was too large for my raft But I would bet it would be perfect for this size DIY craft. i would not buy one tat old to run on purpose though, I only had that one because It was so cheap it was crazy not too and after I rebuilt the carb ( 20 min job ) I used it for a summer and sold it for 100 X's more than I paid for it LOL> You gave me a ton of ideas to play with before next summer man! thanks for the awesome video. i wonder if a central frame built with a singe plastic culvert pipe Capped on both ends and your idea with the buckets as side stabilizers would work? maybe form caps for the fronts of the stabilizer buckets in the cone shape to reduce drag. Or even ditch the buckets completely and build slightly smaller culvert pipes for the side stabilizers. that way if you did use a a 2 stroke 6 to 10 Hp you could get up and go pretty decently, maybe even plain LOL Like a torpedo. the motor would need to be in back of the driver though for that. what if the buckets could be oriented the other way, perpendicular to the boat, especially on the front, so that the round part of the buckets faces the water?
Have you ever considered filling the PVC pipes with an expanding foam after they are glued and screwed. I would also fill buckets. All you need is a fill port and air escape port for any air or overflow. And a spray foam kit. Something to ponder. It would raise the cost but probably make your craft less apt to sink as well as make it more stable.
Cool build. One main problem: The plastic those buckets are made out of is not very UV-Stable. (Actually on purpose, I think, for environmental reasons). In about one season of being out in the Sun, the plastic can become brittle enough to crack. It will definitely happen over time, due to the combination of UV and Oxygen. PVC is Pipe is more UV Stable.
The wafer board around the water will probably not last long. When replacing it would probably be best to use pressure treated plywood or lumber. Cypress would be good too. Nice ideas and work,,,,
You are correct about the wafer board, it will not last long. After a lot of thought I figured out how to take large pieces of PVC pipe and make it flat. So far I am happy with the flat PVC sheets. Very nice pontoon boat. I would have glued the parts together because by screwing the pieces together can seep water. You can always take it apart and glue together.
I’m surprised you didn’t use pvc primer then the glue. It makes a air tight and water tight connection, plus no need for screws. (Sorry just heard you say in the video you didn’t use glue because it’s for a different project)

Great project. Something that's easy to overlook is that you need steps to put your feet on. Having your legs dangle over the edge of a seat for maybe hours on end will start to hurt quite fast.
That lil motor is pretty ok but I think I would use 4 more buckets and add a platform on the back of that thing and mount my twin Merc 250 black Max on there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤙🏻
I would say leaving out how you joined and waterproofed the buckets is a pretty significant omission. I think I would have used glue to solidify the stress on the joints equally. Still a nice bit of engineering. I agree with gent before me who said turn the seat around and your weight distribution problem will probably correct itself.

I would say Marine grade Plywood instead of the OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and more water dynamic cones on the front of the buckets and he would be good to go.

As far as the front goes, use a couple boogie boards from Goodwill or something. Its light, foam, has a turn it at the nose of thw board and it's durable. Should cut down on the resistance a little.
And maybe use a foam cooler for the battery? I don't know what effect the battery would have falling into water under covered. ( Insert joke about currents )
Those batteries should be in the back bro. So the weight will go on the back Not in the front the Tilt will come in the front make easily manueverbality
I saw a fun project where they attached 6, 55 gallon plastic barrels under a picnic table (3 on either side) and they put a trolling motor in the center where the umbrella normally goes. I don't know if it would be a good fishing boat but for hanging out with friends, it could be awesome

Some people have genius idea's but the building process they use almost ALWAYS gets questioned ... !!
scrap the buckets . and just use 12 inch drain pipe. and scrap the 5/16 self tapers and use glue. it would help it float better

The batteries are probably water proofed
Sealed lead acid batteries are by definition, sealed. Not a short hazard either since its 12v-24v...

Good idea you can buy a readymade boat or a kit,but cobbling something together from odds and ends and it works is way more satisfying. Long live diy.
What glue works on polyethylene? Maybe some poly welding is needed?

That is a very creative of you. Only a small sugestion. Maybe its better to use the two long plastic pipes instead of the bucket so you reduce the dragging of the water. Just a sugestion.

After the perminent welding of your pipes pieces I would fill them with an expanding foam mix just to ad that extra structure and give. Plus it'll lose that hollow cheap feel then cast some egg shape floats and bobs your uncle. All the best

i enjoy builds like this. just a thought to lighten the load a bit; use plastic cutting boards (wal-mart) for any decking you may want and use battery boxes to secure the batteries. put the batteries in the rear or underneath of you in line. Someone mentioned plastic bowls from the dollar store that are the same width as the bucket bottoms. Fill those buckets and bowls with foam. Sweet project though. As an afterthought, put some wide wheels from a golf caddie on it and a tow handle. Have fun.

Make a rounded cap for the buckets so when you're moving forwards you don't have water hittin a flat spot. It will help move a little faster

I do get why you put through holes for the battery plates. For me, I would seal up all those holes plus prime and cement all my joints once assembled. Makes it WAY stronger.

Awesome build.. love it sir. I agree does need another bucket in front middle. Wrap it with fiberglass. Buckets too. Make a cone on the front and back of buckets would be cheap, cost effective and would move pretty quickly then. You could make the cones out of cardboard and wrap with fiberglass. Estimate 200 to 300$
The middle bucket is catching your propeller thrust which is applying most of the thrust into trying to push the trolling motor and bucket apart. And use more buckets to form nose cones and that will cut your overall drag way down and likely increase your speed by double if you make the suggested changes.

Nice job. I agree with glue rather than screws. I would try 30 gal solid barrel rather than 2 pails. Need covers for the battery and a life jacket. All and all thumbs up for the idea and the drive to do it.

Another 2 5gl buckets up front for the added weight of the batteries. And you already said you need to add glue. Plus, i would spray foam the insides of the pvc pipes and buckets will make it MUCH more stable, allow for more amenities(weight) and safer if chambers flood that the foam will keep you buoyant. You gave me some ideas for sure. Cool idea. Goid job guy.

Bill Ding --- you can fill the barrels and PVC pipe with pigshit as long as that material is less heavy than water and it won't make a bit of effect on flotation
Great gains can be had when all buckets are in a line and only the front 2 push water. And you can cone those for even less resistance.

I think 4 or 6 - 8' 4" sealed pvc tubes with 90's on front and a cap on back would give you better results... than those buckets... and as someone else said, get rid of those heavy batteries or calculate your center of gravity and shift them back.
Acutely for long term riding put two skids under the buckets and install five batteries in the buckets. Nice concept I could see this being very versatile with limited energy needed to go have fun. Great share thank you😌

Friction fit PVC will leak. Should have glued the joints with proper glue and dolvent

Just a suggestion but hang frame from buckets use sealed tubes instead of screws you'll obtain better buoyancy and having the buckets turned 90 degrees to reduce drag. Fill buckets and frame with foam? Tis the season to start

Get some plastic bowls from the dollar store. Attach to the fronts of the buckets, to significantly reduce drag. To keep water out? Fill with spray-foam once attached.
Good idea on the foam. Pay a kid to fill each piece of the piping as you attach them.

Home depot, Lowe's buckets hate UV exposure, they go bad so fast, and become cracking, that you would be amazed. At this point I'd buy one foot or larger diameter pvc pipe, and make pontoons out of it, two loooong pontoons, filled with expanding foam, PVC glue capped, and that will give you seasons of use, especially if you paint the pontoons to cut on UV exposure

If somehow you can make the buckets pointy like bullet shape, you may get less resistance in the water, but the design is totally cool. Cheers!!!

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoons white sugar
1 egg
1 cup milk

1/2 cup frozen blueberries, thawed

i'd move the batteries behind the seat to remove the front end weight since you have more flotation in the rear. I'd also hide the cabling inside the pvc. but all in all not a bad idea.
I saw a design on junk yard wars many years ago and I thought that it was a good dyi project. They used maybe 5 55 gallon barrels for a keel with a rounded nose on the lead barrel. Then the plan was to use 2 outriggers again made from 55 gallon drums welded back to the center keel. They put an inline 4 banger in one of the barrels and ran a drive shaft to a prop through the last barrel. It was a great design. It floated and ran very fast through the water. The problem was that they ran out of time before they got the 2nd outrigger attached. It dumped the crew. That being said....your little boat looks like fun. Maybe think about the center keel with outriggers. Good luck on your next attempt.

The buckets are really cool and a stroke of genius. Lowes also has 12" PVC pipe in 20 foot sections. 12" caps and 12" X 4" T's would be able to be clear primered and glued on for extra strength and weight savings? Just a thought.

That is a cool start on a great idea, It's definitely a Builders preference type of thing though hu! LOL I might have come to the design you built on paper, but it would stayed on paper for improvements I think. Or it could be that i just saw yours and had the opportunity to shake my head where you didn't get yours till after the build.
I wondered right away why you screwed it together rather than making it water tight, seems the frame would only make it more buoyant which is desirable. While making it water tight might seem more difficult in the build, seems to me it would be more than worth it. That wood used is a bad choice for sure, the osb right? Id pick a different material for that purpose. the 5 gallon Buckets. You know, that is an awesome Idea , there are other buckets that are bigger though, I have used some material from the kind of buckets you have there ( lowes specifically ) to plastic weld with. I don't know how well it works yet but I have seen welding kits at harbor freight I have been wanting to check out. they are dirty ass cheap of course as is the material. Seems to me that back pontoon on the single arm is giving you decent support and the front end is lacking.
I sold a 6 HP Clinton 2 stroke motor a while back that was too large for my raft But I would bet it would be perfect for this size DIY craft. i would not buy one tat old to run on purpose though, I only had that one because It was so cheap it was crazy not too and after I rebuilt the carb ( 20 min job ) I used it for a summer and sold it for 100 X's more than I paid for it LOL>

i wonder if a central frame built with a singe plastic culvert pipe Capped on both ends and your idea with the buckets as side stabilizers would work? maybe form caps for the fronts of the stabilizer buckets in the cone shape to reduce drag. Or even ditch the buckets completely and build slightly smaller culvert pipes for the side stabilizers. that way if you did use a a 2 stroke 6 to 10 Hp you could get up and go pretty decently, maybe even plain LOL Like a torpedo. the motor would need to be in back of the driver though for that.

It would be more even surface area against the water flow and the rounded curve wouldn't make much difference then.
Have you ever considered filling the PVC pipes with an expanding foam after they are glued and screwed. I would also fill buckets. All you need is a fill port and air escape port for any air or overflow. And a spray foam kit. Something to ponder. It would raise the cost but probably make your craft less apt to sink as well as make it more stable.

Cool build. One main problem: The plastic those buckets are made out of is not very UV-Stable. (Actually on purpose, I think, for environmental reasons). In about one season of being out in the Sun, the plastic can become brittle enough to crack. It will definitely happen over time, due to the combination of UV and Oxygen. PVC is Pipe is more UV Stable.
Those buckets are a lot tougher than you think.

When replacing it would probably be best to use pressure treated plywood or lumber.

You are correct about the wafer board, it will not last long. After a lot of thought I figured out how to take large pieces of PVC pipe and make it flat. So far I am happy with the flat PVC sheets. Very nice pontoon boat. I would have glued the parts together because by screwing the pieces together can seep water. You can always take it apart and glue together.

I’m surprised you didn’t use pvc primer then the glue. It makes a air tight and water tight connection, plus no need for screws.

Great project. Something that's easy to overlook is that you need steps to put your feet on. Having your legs dangle over the edge of a seat for maybe hours on end will start to hurt quite fast.
That lil motor is pretty ok but I think I would use 4 more buckets and add a platform on the back of that thing and mount my twin Merc 250 black Max on there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤙🏻
I would say leaving out how you joined and waterproofed the buckets is a pretty significant omission. I think I would have used glue to solidify the stress on the joints equally. Still a nice bit of engineering. I agree with gent before me who said turn the seat around and your weight distribution problem will probably correct itself.

As far as the front goes, use a couple boogie boards from Goodwill or something. Its light, foam, has a turn it at the nose of thw board and it's durable. Should cut down on the resistance a little.
And maybe use a foam cooler for the battery? I don't know what effect the battery would have falling into water under covered. ( Insert joke about currents )

I saw a fun project where they attached 6, 55 gallon plastic barrels under a picnic table (3 on either side) and they put a trolling motor in the center where the umbrella normally goes. I don't know if it would be a good fishing boat but for hanging out with friends, it could be awesome
