A clip from a recent production of Strathcona Christian Academy's production of Les Miserables. This clip features Alicia, one of two actors to portray this role.
Also, she overacts because it's livs theatre. The audience has to SEE what she's doing. The quality of her acting is debatable, but overacting in itself is common in theatre. You have to understand that they need to make sure people sitting way in the back can still see what's going on. That's why early movies like Nosferatu were so over dramatic. Actors had no idea how to react to a canera, and as they were so used to overdoing it for live theatre, they just went with that.
We didn't actually skip verses. They were removed by the author. The rights to the full musical are restricted to professional companies; we licensed a slightly edited version (which is the only one currently available).
I noticed that like many other versions, the second stanza was omitted: "There is a room that's full of toys, There are a hundred boys and girls, Nobody shouts or talks too loud, Not in my castle on a cloud."
Because she was abused and neglected by the people who took her in, the Thenardiers. Cosette was given nothing, while their daughter, Eponine, was dressed well and spoiled. It was also implied that they only took her in because they wanted the money from her mom and a source of free labor to do the dirty work.
All I can tell you is that's what we did. It could be that other schools have licensed the school version and just opted to put the exised lyrics back in, which would be in breach of the contract that gets signed when one licenses the show. Either way, the version I've posted was the only version available to amateur theatre groups at the time.
Young Cosette is generally played by a girl who is 8 or 9, since ten years pass between her time at the inn and her and valjean's arrival in paris, making older cosette 18 or 19
We didn't leave it out - it was taken out due to the fact that we licensed the School Edition of the play. At the time we did Les Mis, it was the only license available and some verses were taken out.
@W3irdRandomVids She didn't forget the lines - the company which controls the rights to Les Mis will only license a slightly edited version to schools (the difference being that some lines have been removed - it's just a way to make a clear distinction between professional and amateur companies).
Theres one more verse that is always forgotten "there is a room thats full of toys there are a hundred boys and girls nobody shouts or talks too loud not in my castle on a cloud" because they messed up the lyrics while recording or filming
The licensing company doesn't license the full show to amateur companies (i.e. schools) so there's verses that have been left out - from this song as well as a few others.
It's not in the version released to high schools and junior theater companies. (Les Mis School Edition) Little things like that are snipped out here and there because it's so long.
The fact that you would compare the Madam to the AMAZING Jenny Garaway is a shame, even though the point you made is excellent. This one screams and screeches like a wild animal. I've shown this to 10 friends of mine, each has hated her performance. I cannot emphasize how great Cosette is here, she is one of the best I've ever heard!
I agree, but she didn't sing the second verse because its not in the schools version and its copyright to include it - despite that I agree with your comment.
OK!! For all you haters out there, it's a show. Don't be hating on the actors. They have to follow the directions of the director. Have you ever seen Oklahoma? The girl that sings " I can't say no" her voice is sooo whiny in that show. Maybe that was just part of her character!? Maybe these girls thought Mrs. Thenadier should have a rough and ragged voice, and Cosette an English accent! If you don't like it, don't watch! Thank you. :-D
@brokenstove as far as i remember, when the musical was written, the french didnt want it for some reason, so the author sold the rights in england. it then got popular but ever since, they kept the english texts
Alecia is the girl who plays Cosettes name. I just had a sleepover with her last night lol. She is a much better singer now because this was 2 years ago.
I deletes your comment. I'd rather have constructive comments that avoid use of foul language. Don't forget that's a real person you're talking about, and she happens to be quite wonderful.
She didn't skip a verse, I am guessing this is the Schools Edition as this is the only one currently available for amateur groups to hire, where the second verse is cut. In this case it's a blessing :(
@Cinrac2 because english accents are stereotypically more appropriate for fairytales, musical etc. its because its the oldest and most prestigous accent in the language.
yeah, i got linked her from the 10th aniversary vid, and the Madame there was really great...just the right pauses, perfect intonation for the part...but i guess they had to stick with the recorded music here, and couldn't alter the tempo of the song...
+Ashley Winn, I think it depends on your voice and how you look. If you're tall, look a bit mature for your age, and have a more mature voice, you probably wouldn't be able to, but if you're more petite, and have a higher, less matured voice, then you could most likely pull it off. 😊 And, if it doesn't work out, you could always play adult Cosette in a few years!
The rights are based on how many people are going to be in your show, so the cost will vary. For us, we paid about $3500CDN for 6 performances to an audience of 500.
I'm a freshman, in 9 weeks i'll be a sophomore.. But Is it weird to know I already know what my senior solo for choir is gonna be? Cus if it is.. Oh well. :)
she is not bad, but just like you said the 25th anniversary one sounded much more fittign and her little accent was cute, also she was younger than this girl (in this video) so its even more fitting i think
she skiped there is a room thats full of toys there are a hundred boys and girls no one shouts or talks to loud not in my castle on a cloud o. o any one else noticed?
When we were starting auditions for this (we're in the middle of a production right now) we were told that we sounded like we were going to church, and that Madame probably didn't even go to church. Madame is supposed to be a very bad singer, and they told us to just have fun and be greedy evil and sleezy (this was during group rehearsal) I am now going to be Madame, and all because I had fun and made her a horrid singer.
Madam Thenardier sounds like real angry xD this clip is wow. Good job!
"She's too old"Yeah. Well amateur groups can't exactly rent young children for Thier performances. Casts don't just come out of thin air.
Also, she overacts because it's livs theatre. The audience has to SEE what she's doing. The quality of her acting is debatable, but overacting in itself is common in theatre. You have to understand that they need to make sure people sitting way in the back can still see what's going on.

best set design, direction, lighting and costumes I've seen
Madame interacts well with the discordant piano
I love when she starts begging, and the lights go off.
The voice of Cosette is amazing😍
She's actually the best I've heard perform this in a long time.
I noticed that like many other versions, the second stanza was omitted:
"There is a room that's full of toys,

Nobody shouts or talks too loud,
Not in my castle on a cloud."

10 minutes later (10 on the perfomance timeline) Cossete is the f* queen, Eponine is almost homeless.
I really like that Little Cosette's singing

This cast did very well. I'd love to come and see both casts!
"Please do not send me out allurn, not in the dark niss on my yun."
INCREDIBLE 😍
This show is the "School Edition" which had certain parts cut out. The amateur rights for Les Mis were only released about six months ago.
We didn't leave it out - it was taken out due to the fact that we licensed the School Edition of the play. At the time we did Les Mis, it was the only license available and some verses were taken out.
when I was 8 I played little cosette for a high school and I had been in love with this song sice I was 3 and has been singing this song at 3
Love this song
so awesome

i just cover my ears
I have become used to a loud BANG sound due to the tenth anniversary.
She was good enough to be cast in a Broadway show. I'd say that's pretty decent.
Theres one more verse that is always forgotten "there is a room thats full of toys there are a hundred boys and girls nobody shouts or talks too loud not in my castle on a cloud" because they messed up the lyrics while recording or filming

@@brokenstove yeah I know I was just saying this for the people who didn’t know (sorry if I sounded a bit mean in this)
@@bellz376 Not at all. Appreciate the kindness of your tone, tbh.
@@brokenstove thank you! :)

i love this song i played her in a play
The little girl's voice is sweet.
OK!! For all you haters out there, it's a show. Don't be hating on the actors. They have to follow the directions of the director. Have you ever seen Oklahoma? i liked Madam Thernardierre, (the mean chick), thats the song that i sing for my production of Les Miserables. i sing castle on a cloud too!
@brokenstove as far as i remember, when the musical was written, the french didnt want it for some reason, so the author sold the rights in england. it then got popular but ever since, they kept the english texts
She can be even harsher ya know
i sang this song in choir as well we sang it that fast must been your teacher that slowed it down.
Yah this is amazing !
Everyone in the show is actually Canadian. Weird fact: most people (those who are trained singers, anyways) are taught to sing with a British accent.
Alecia is the girl who plays Cosettes name. I just had a sleepover with her last night lol. She is a much better singer now because this was 2 years ago.
I deletes your comment.

very sweet!!! congratulations!! from argentina!!
It's to make her sound younger. The average Cosette is 12-14, but she's supposed to be about 8.
She didn't skip a verse, I am guessing this is the Schools Edition as this is the only one currently available for amateur groups to hire, where the second verse is cut. In this case it's a blessing :(
Yup. School edition.
+mtuckerbath she actually did skip a verse :/
@Cinrac2 because english accents are stereotypically more appropriate for fairytales, musical etc. its because its the oldest and most prestigous accent in the language.
I noticed. I just learned the song and i was sing along when i thought i messed up but she never sang that verse.
0.0
yeah, i got linked her from the 10th aniversary vid, and the Madame there was really great...just the right pauses, perfect intonation for the part...but i guess they had to stick with the recorded music here, and couldn't alter the tempo of the song...
I'll probably get around to it eventually...just lots of other projects on the go right now...
she missed the 2nd verse with the room full of toys
That lady has a giant voice not including the microphone
that same line was cut from the current tour as well.
no one can ever beat the actuall origonal musical this girl will neva beat the propa cohen and the maddame is mentul no affence xxx

oh! well that makes sense. I imagine copyright laws are complex.

So's Cosette, I think. Dropping to her knees for "Please do not..." actually takes away some of the power of the song, I think.
That is cut from most play versions.
We're just called an "Academy". We're actually a publically funded highschool.
lmao! i love it to.
I'm a freshman, in 9 weeks i'll be a sophomore.. But Is it weird to know I already know what my senior solo for choir is gonna be? Cus if it is.. Oh well. :)
@brokenstove all the other videos on youtube use the whole version.. I've never seen it shortened like this. Either someone paid no rights or...
Nope - the play was done in Sherwood Park, AB.
I rather like Madame T in this one :3
Lighting crew did quite well also, kudos!
And I like Young Cosette's make-up... She looks really sickly :D
yeah, in the schools version, there is one less verse
Has anyone priced the rights to the full show? I am looking to do this show soon and I am afraid of what the rights are going to cost.
that does not sound like alicia morton, but its still REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD!! i didnt know she could sing like that!!!!! =) =) =)
good performance! que buena presentación :D vibras!
Gracias amigo tu bales mucho mas
Thanks ♥♥♥ Enzo Torres
Gracias
there doing the schools version, its cut down a lot from the original one
@ErikaCn100 the girl, cossette, had to live with another family, who mistreats her, but treats their own children like princesses
No probs! I'm 12 too! :)
she looks the same as the other one is it the theatre group!!
FREAKY SONG!!!!
WHY SO MANY DISLIKES???!!
@brokenstove um i didint mean the girl she sing like an angle my friend from my school was wacking this lol
does the girl have any recent songs up? that was really good :)
She was 11 at the time.
This is Les Miserable, not American Idol.
she is not bad, but just like you said the 25th anniversary one sounded much more fittign and her little accent was cute, also she was younger than this girl (in this video) so its even more fitting i think
i agree with the thernadier front, it was sort of too pantomime
nice
no es su madrastra, se supone que Madame Thénardier solo debia cuidar de ella...
i think she is fine..she has this sad feeling which is meant to get acrossed
My ears. God.
I agree with marie...the second verse is very important.."there is a room thats full of toys...." why did you leave that out?
she skiped there is a room thats full of toys there are a hundred boys and girls no one shouts or talks to loud not in my castle on a cloud o. o any one else noticed?
How young was the girl playing Young Cosette in this clip? Also, where is this school?
When we were starting auditions for this (we're in the middle of a production right now) we were told that we sounded like we were going to church, and that Madame probably didn't even go to church. aawwwww i wanted to see the rest :(
why is it sooooooo fast??????
@brokenstove yea, i was.
madame's dress looks like snow white, but ripped, lmao
is this place in granvelle street? Cause i went there
she looks like jennete mcurdy who plays sam on icarly a little bit
she's 10!
is both
Why is Madame Thenardier yelling at the audience instead of Cosette???
@Dancer536 You spelt 'Cosette' wrong. :|
She's got a good voice, but it's much too nasal for Little Cosette's voice.
she sound like a cat that it's tail just got stepped on...
ooh i played Young Eponine (this is a reply to brokenstove)
Lovely job! She struggled a little with the low notes...but she's 10. She sings better than I did at her age.
Cossete: 10/10
Madame Therandier: Ugh!!!
the girl is very good.
