    A lot of fans and subscribers of this channel are conflicted between studying engineering vs. studying design. If this sounds like you, a new blog post has been posted that you might in interested in that covers the pros and cons of each - howtodrawcars.net/automotive-designer-or-mechanical-engineer/

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are doing good figures and portraits, drawing cars should be easier. I have one of my current students doing figure drawings and he's begging to back to easy stuff, like drawing cars. I agree it can be challenge for any first timer. There is a lot of technique involved. Moreover, making up a new design is much different than representing a figure from a photo or life. Stay with it. In the hierarchy of the hardest things to draw, you're already at the top of the list. Cars should come to you in time.

    Thank you sooo much for these videos! Im 16 years old and am quite experienced with 3D rendering of vehicles on Blender, howver ive found i need to work on my actual pencil drawings of cars. Im hoping i can make it in this industry, its my dream and im gonna try as God damn hard as i can !

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      You're very welcome. Every time I think I'm going to stop I get a comment like yours that makes me see the value in continuing. Regarding digital vs actual pencil drawing, it will be very hard to become great and master the techniques just by using software.
      The digital space has it's place but should never come at the expense of time spent drawing by hand with real materials. Especially if you are young and still working on techniques like line quality and line weight. Computers are not going anywhere. They'll be there when you're ready and can make the most out of them. You're making the right choice by spending your time on actually drawings.
      If you really want to accelerate your abilities, I would take a look at this -
      www.udemy.com/introduction-to-automotive-design/learn/v4/overview
      It takes the best of what I've done on this channel and expands it. it's much more structured than what's on youtube as well. It's designed for someone just like you, with your level of "gas in the veins". There's a preview video there you can check out. Good luck and keep pushing.

Many of the challenges our students are facing with their work are the same as many of the subs on this channel. By taking the essence of the tutoring session and posting it here, it can help everyone who watches get better if they are struggling. I think there is room to do more of my own sketches but the planning involved is greater. How to draw in perspective
    -get a oculus and open gravity sketch
    The end
    Srs, all designers, try it out, completely changed my workflow. Especially useful when designing around a package. Also great for consumer products. Just as fast as paper, if not faster, and more versatile.
    It's a great tool for people who like to design but suck at sketching because of not having put thousands of hours of practice into it.

      Yes, you would not want to put thousands of hours into a skill that is at the foundation of your chosen profession. Doing that has worked out so well for so many others. Here's an idea: Accept that achieving something extraordinary in life requires hard work. Commit to doing the hard work that is required then put your head down and get to work. I've never seen anyone in get hired in transportation or product design that could not draw. Period. I would suggest you take the time you are spending looking for an easy way out and just spend it improving your skills.

      @@howtodrawcars. oh give me a break. I've put thousands of hours into sketching but the moment I put on a headset I regretted the effort I put into building the muscle memory. It's no shortcut, it's just better, plain and simple. For packaging any kind of product vr is just unbeatable in terms of speed and precision. You can immediately see your design from all angles, instantaneously check whether the 95 percentile can actually see out the window, whether the mechanical components will fit in whatever body you drew, what the boot space will be... This is all within the first 10 minutes of starting your design. No customer ever cared if a product was born as an oil painting or as a sculpture made of toothpicks. And yeah, if your 80 year old studio lead hasn't even ever heard of vr and doesn't hire based off that that's just corporate inertia and gatekeeping by the likes of you. Decent affordable walkaround vr has only been around for a few years ffs, but it's gonna be very relevant for product designers.

      Free - You never said in your original post that you had put the hours in already. My reply would have been different. I also appreciated your spirited reply. Good on' ya for that. About 40% of my subscribers live in a place where getting basic art supplies is impossible. Reading a comment where someone is saying you don't need to learn to draw because this really fancy piece of technology will do it for you could be extremely discouraging for someone who cannot find the right pencils to draw with in the first place. I am sure you can understand that. Car designers run on passion and a dream. My reply was about protecting that dream for so many who's only option is to draw. I agree, the more tools the better. And the better tools, the better. You want to use the tools that will yield the best design. That's not always the latest technology but sometimes it is.

      Yes the concept is the same. Most people have trouble with incorporating the ellipses and making them look correct. That's, as you mention, is the difference.

    Thank you so much for sharing your image mark, and also how to draw car for the detailed explanation most people won't share what you have they just go straight into the point without explaining what goes into drawing, thank you so much for sharing. Just wondering if you have any video on how to convert a side view to 3/4 front or rear view and also drawing in a bird eyes view?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment. I am glad the video was helpful. You convert a side view to a 3/4 view through practice and understanding the proportion of the vehicle you're trying to represent. I don't have a video on this but it is something I teach to my students in my private tutoring all the time. You can learn more about working with me one-on-one here - howtodrawcars.net/autmotive-design-course/
      Regarding the birds-eye or tip up view, that is something that is covered in my course on Udemy. I believe it's the Level 2 course. You can watch a preview here - www.udemy.com/course/automotive-design-level-2/?referralCode=7487EEFD9C778A22A1BE
      www.udemy.com/course/introduction-to-automotive-design/?referralCode=17C40D3D6D40C2E8CBCB
      If you're serious about a future in automotive design, check out the links above and think about doing a project together. My students are turning down FULL scholarships to one top design school to take a scholarship to another. That's the position you want to be in.
