What about coaster wheels on your cutting table? Then you could potentially move it away from the wall and move around it when cutting. Also you could hang lesser used equipment like rulers ,French curves etc. from the peg board.
I would actually put furniture sliders/wheels under all the major pieces of furniture. That way, if you need to reconfigure your space in the future, it's easy peasy. I would also get a restaurant-grade floor mat for the cutting table. As you said in your video, you do a lot of standing, and this would just be more comfortable for your legs, feet, and back. As for the wall color, I watched your video on my TV and found your raw cotton color washes out in the light. When you pulled back the camera, there wasn't much difference between the base white and your color. Maybe something in a more blush tone?
The advice that came to mind for your sewing space is that concrete wicks moisture and retains moisture, and I'm a little concerned about your keeping fabric and paper in a place that would potentially be damp. So my advice would be to moisture-proof any surface that you can to prevent mustiness in the future. And maybe even have a de-humidifier running in there, if that's feasible?
I was more or less thinking the same. I am from a cold and wet country, so the first thing that came to my mind was " insolation" 😅 Good luck with the renovation! 😘
😊painting the brick is going to help. She has windows and light coming into the room , I am not sure if that is large door that can be opened to the outside. I really think her furniture and materials are going to be safe in the space. She can use a Space heater when it is cold and a dehumidifier as needed in all seasons. A fan on a stand in the summer and whenever needed. My sister has a basement that is all cinder block and she has no problem. Heat in the winter and a dehumidifier . She stores everything there. She sews there and she stores fabrics there.

I love that you paint with disposable gloves on! I do this too, which as a nurse always seemed logical to me, and it is so handy to be able to whip them off and not have totally paint encrusted hands! Go you!

It's going to be lovely. I noticed there's a gap under the door. You need a weather strip or a firm brush draft strip to stop mice accessing your beautiful fabrics. Last thing you want is finding they've invaded & nested in your piles of future projects. I would also look out for an opening window you can swap out. If your exit were blocked in the event of a fire you need some way to get out. Oh dear i sound very full of doom. Better to be safe though.
Totally agree with making the door mice proof. The little blytters will get through the smallest of gaps to find a warm place to nest and they love chewing through fabric. I learnt the hard way about that. I would also put some underlay and large mats or carpet down. It will make it feel so much more comfortable, and warmer in the winter. Love what you've done so far and am excited to see how it turns out. ❤ Xx
Amazing what a difference a good scrub and neutral paint base makes. The energy has lifted so much alreeady! Calico is so creamy and gorgeous! I'm sure all your pink accents and objects will throw a bit more pink its way ✨
Great work! When I converted a garage into my studio I painted the concrete floor with appropriate paint. This worked well in stopping the dust that happens with unsealed concrete. However, it remained very cold underfoot. So I was thinking maybe vinyl plank flooring or a sheet of vinyl glued down which come in some good patterns now even wood look. They are on huge rolls in Bunnings or flooring stores. Oh, also with the garage conversion, around the edges where I see that you have the flashing layer we ended up having to put a tar sealer because moisture was seeping through during heavy rain and mould grew. I have beamed ceiling in my cabin, I’ve put voiles up so that it looks a lot softer and homely and blinds up at the windows and curtains on the doors. It’s my favourite place to be. Your sewing space will be lovely whatever you decide to do 💕💕

This is going to be exciting to watch! I recently made a sewing space out of a similar size and shape room. I, too, put my long cutting table along one wall. One thing I wish I would have done differently was to position my table so I could walk around the two long sides. It would have made cutting so much easier. Enjoy the process!
Not crazy at all, I was in two minds for weeks about whether or not to paint it! In the end it was a practical choice though because the light that bounces around the room now because of the paint is incredible (and much needed for filming in the space)
Beautiful! Congratulations on all the amazing progress so far! I can relate to the overwhelm of starting a big project like this. Hopefully getting the space cleaned out and undercoat painted gave a good bit of kinetic energy to this massive undertaking, and the rest of the project just keeps rolling for you! So excited to see what you do with the space, and it’s nice to have some design and DIY content that is sewing-adjacent sprinkled into your channel. I’m keen to see what you decide to do for the floors, and of course all the decorative bits and tweaks as time goes on and you get used to the space. What a treat to have that fruit tree right outside your door! It all just looks so delightful.
🌿🌸 Personally, I would highly recommend to fill in all the open spaces between the floor and walls with concrete, reseal the windows, attach a seal onto the bottom of the door, paint all of the walls a off white shade to bounce more lighting around the room and to be able to showcase your pieces more accurately, paint the ceiling polar white but paint the beams a different shade that you would like to make them stand out more, maybe put in wood frames inside the windows and around thin carved trim around the outside edges of the windows that could be painted the same color as the ceiling beams, put in faux wood vinyl or real wood flooring because paint will peel up all over the place since it’s the floor and not the walls or ceiling, locking door knob, window locks, curtains and also install a fold down ironing table and other space saving things you will need to save more space so that can do so much more with the estate of the room to build your dream sewing room.🌸🌿

You will be amazed at how your accents will not only pop but also make your neutral walls take on the hue you are looking for. Go for the darker pink color! It's still a light color for the camera and space, and would give the space some color and actual personality. Also if you insist on painting that bar thing for the cutting table, mabey stain it with a similar tone to what it is currently just to fix it up and make it look nice, or even stain it to match those light tan cabinets you already have instead of painting it white. Mabey some of those beams on the walls could also be stained a light color instead of white as well?
Oh yes, the bricks are a great idea for neatening off the back wall of the room. You could try to build a sort of ledge to display things? White bricks and wood are a lovely combination.

Hi Janelle, Just watching you talk about your plans - when you’re putting your pegboard behind your cutting table, make sure you don’t have to stretch too much to get anything. I had a similar set-up (including a higher table) but had to rearrange things so I wasn’t putting extra pressure on my back while reaching over the table (I had scissors, rotary cutters, etc. on the board). Good luck with it all!
That’s a really good point and something I’ve been thinking about too. I was thinking maybe half the peg board behind the cutting table for less frequently used items and half the peg board with nothing in front for my more everyday use items 🤔
I think the colour you chose is beautiful and love what you are doing. Consider making your cutting table the size of your cutting mats. Can't wait to see some more.
Wow, I'm so interested that you've come across my feed today. My sewing space is almost the same as yours, right down to the one timber wall! I have brick walls on the other three sides and windows all round. Despite being under my house, I was surprised at how much light comes in, particularly winter mornings when the sun is so much lower. I've wall mounted some mirrors to help bounce the light around. I even have a similar cutting table, whereby I've utilised an old map cupboard that was left behind and laid an old conference table that I picked up at a garage sale for $30 on top. I would recommend putting it on wheels as I move it around a lot more than I thought I would. I don't know what area you live in, but do have a look at possible damp and water ingress. I live in northern NSW where it's hot and humid and given the heavy rains and flooding we've had in recent years, my sewing room sometimes feels a little damp. I use an dehumidifier when I need to. You might live in a much drier area than me, so it may not be an issue. I'll follow your journey with interest!

Laminate floor boards would be my recommendation for flooring in concrete. We did it in our basement and there is a measurable temperature difference as you do need to lay down a thin layer of foam underneath when installing. Also Rustoleum paint or an equivalent for the iron as it will prevent the rust from bleeding through, and prevent further rusting. Highly recommended casters on your cutting table so you can put it against the wall when you want or you can move it out to walk all the way around it. Possibly consider it for all the furniture for ease of moving around in the room to find what works, and cleaning.
I love how bright it is now it’s white, the space is amazing Janelle, I can’t wait to see you creating in there! If you haven’t already, I would try and keep the wall opposite the windows as light as possible, and I would paint the ceiling as bright a white as you can. A filmographer told me that you should use your ceiling as a massive reflector if you can, point your lights at it, as it creates natural diffusion. You can get special rust killer for the beams (in the uk it’s called hammerite) and you can also get special primer that blocks the rust, it’s a little more expensive usually, but worth it! One thing did occur to me, it might not be an issue in Tasmania, I’m not familiar with the climate so I’m not sure, but the walls look single depth? Uninsulated? Do you need to be cautious about damp/mildew in the winter? I’m thinking of your garment rail against that wall specifically. In the UK I know I would have to add a layer of damp blocking primer and maybe I would actually board out that wall just in case (though obviously completely different climate and we’re known for being damp! 😂) might not be a concern in your location but thought I’d mention it just in case.
I painted my concrete floor in a checker board pattern...so fun!! Border the room then tape it out to paint the squares or diamond shapes. Just an idea😊
I like my reg machine and my serger close together so you don't have to get up and down and move to a separate table ..I suggest an L table under the window and you just have to pivot your chair..don't forget your ironing board..isn't it fairly hot down under...maybe an air conditioner in the smaller window...then a few heaters for your colder months...and lots of outlets...
I'm so excited to see how this comes out! What an absolutely beautiful space. They make paint specifically for coating metal so that it doesn't rust and bleed through- it'll be clearly labeled in the paint shop. This looks so good already.
Have you thought of an epoxy finish on the floor. It comes in different colors and seals the concrete too. The space looks so much better now. All your hard work is paying off!
We used a cork click lock flooring in our living room recently - pros are that is is insulating and didn’t require an additional underlay on concrete, Firm but soft and warm. Definitely nice for a sewing room! We went with champagne sand as the colour and I think you would love it too. A large mirror in the space to help reflect light and for dress fitting is a must - which makes me think if there is room for a screen to make a changing area that would be helpful too (could also be handy for hiding camera gear etc).
Looking clean and bright ☀️ IDK if Bunnings sells a similar 2 part epoxy paint like we used on our concrete garage floor here in the US? Our floor paint came with colored sprinkles that you toss over the wet paint, that when dry creates a terrazzo look that is durable and easy to mop clean. Epoxy paint is an inexpensive DIY option that could easily be extended with more paint or covered over with new floating floors after you expand in phase 2. Excited to see phase 1 as it comes together.😻
Excited to follow the progress on this big project! 🤩 As soon as you mentioned your plans for the layout and your cutting table, I thought you should check out @ShannonMakes' recent video about her sewing table that she customized/upcycled ...and then you shared the bar that was left with the house and now I think you should *definitely* check it out 😅 If it's not too much taller, wheels could be a great addition before painting! Then you could make use of the peg board back or keep it empty and turn the table to protect whatever you keep in the cubbies from that morning sun ☀️
Here’s a few hints that I learned the hard way. Especially when painting on brick or concrete and well the metal. Seal first. Then primer. My walls literally “drank” up all my hard effort of priming and then painting. Should have sealed that up first. Save $$ on paint for sure. Plus after I did that all important step. I too was impatient and just wanted to get on with it. Walls were splotchy. Rust on the metal definitely “peeked” through. Like I said. Lesson learned. I am so looking forward to watching your progress and gleen some sewing room ideas for my later renovation plans.
What a woman!You’ve done a fabulous job so far Janelle, the really tough work is behind you now - yay! I see someone has already suggested wheels for your cutting table, I certainly second that! Also, you could install a larger top on the bar to give you a grater area for spreading fabric when cutting. If this feels too intrusive it could be a flap on hinges that can be employed as needed. (Like old fashioned side or dining tables).This could be affixed to the back so it doesn’t impede access to the shelves. You could simply wheel the table out and raise the extension. You may need sone “Killrust” products for those metal beams. Available in the paint section at Bunnings. I’m so looking forward to the next episode of this makeover. It’s so exciting to have a dedicated workspace at home but completely separate to your living space. I have one that, like yours, requires a lot of preparation before I can make it my own but I’m already collecting bits and pieces, such as carpet tiles to make the concrete floor a bit more snug, and furniture. All very exciting!
Perhaps some canvas fabric or gauze panels billowing across the ceiling between the beams? And white fairy lights all over the ceiling. Picture frame the windows so it looks like paintings hanging on the wall from hooks with ribbons. Hanging wicker baskets here and there could hold a plant or store useful items

What a little bit of paint can do! Keep the paint as light as possible to reflect all the light ;). Love your new house! I have a question, I’m from a completely different climate, but where I live this “unfinished” floor would cause the room to get moist. Which is of course not something you want in any room especially where you keep fabric. But maybe where you live this isn’t a problem. Looking forward to see the progress! ☺️
Congrats on your DIY job. You can totally do it yourself. I did a whole house by myself. No men. If you don't know stuff ask. Don't be scared. I found mitre 10 so help for my house. Your so lucky your Dad can help with the bricks. I just have to ask does it feel damp in there at all? Just something you definitely need to take into consideration and the rusty rails, you can buy a specific paint to stop the rust bleeding through. You'll need a steel brush to prepare first but definitely go ask about that just incase I've messed up my info. It's looking great. Don't doubt yourself. You can do it by yourself. ❤❤
To create your hanging “rod,” you could use black plumbing pipes. You could put the flanges on the ceiling and bring the pipe down to the correct height then add 90 degree electrical conduit elbows or black pipe elbows if available. Then run the pipe along the length of the space adding “t” pieces and running up to the ceiling as support. I used this pipe to create some outdoor curtain rods and it worked like a charm. The only caveat is to be careful not to get your fabric up against the pipe as the black rubs off, but that shouldn’t happen if you are using hangers. Good luck! It looks great already.
8:30 that is something that has always stood out to me over the years of watching your videos is that I thought you must have great core strength to tolerate stooping over a cutting table for more than a few minutes!
I love your style. Something to consider is something to help with echoes like a lovely quilted wall hanging. Upholstered chairs. Things like that, maybe?😊
This is a lovely space. I keep looking at the cracks at the bottom of the wall and ceiling gaps and think..SNAKES! Please make sure every hole is sealed cos of snakes hiding or coming through the cracks and ceiling gaps. I can't wait to see the finished product.
The ideal thing to paint the rusted steel beams with is Evaporust or Ospho. I am sure y'all have something similar in Australia. I can't wait to see the complete transformation of your new sewing space.
I would recommend a vinyl tile with self stick adhesive back for the floors. Easy to clean and easy to remove in the future for the eventual expansion.

Have you checked that the space is weather/moisture proof and I noticed someone else mentioned sealing up small gaps to guard against mice! Its going to be so wonderful once its finished! Please keep track of the amount of time you spend on it so you can share with us what it took!
This looks awesome, what a fun project!! I reckon a feature wall at the back wall could look good for a pop of colour, like a deeper rosary pink than the cotton.
If you have a gramophone you should set up a little corner by that small window with a library to carry all your sewing books your gramophone and records with a cozy armchair. You could sit in that corner play vintage records, while you read or sew, it’ll give your sewing space such a 1940s vibe
You could glue down Autex garage carpet, it comes 1.8m wide and several colours and it’s great for areas where the floor may be damp, water won’t hurt it and scrubs clean with hot soapy water.
Idea: you could paint the insides of the windows/sills calico and the actual walls cotton, then you’d have your beigey neutral main color but pops of your more rosery pink? And be able to use them both!
Congratulations on your new home. You have done a fabulous fix it up job so far. My only suggestion would have been to sandblast (by a professional) for the rust on the metal beams.
You could take advantage of the beams in the ceiling and have shelves/compartments built down off them, like, they would be almost hanging down per se. It would be good storage without taking up any floor space.
Hi Janelle, looking good. I have a lot of experience re paint colours and especially lighter colours. I also have 'raw cotton' in a living room. It is very much a 'beige' with no pink undertones. If u were to use it I'd definitely go half or quarter strength. I'd personally choose quarter strength. With ur area I think as light as possible would be best for filming etc. But IF u were wanting more of ur 'Rosery Apparel' colour palette then the 'calico' looks like a good choice, but I'd once again go half or quarter strength.. I also think the idea of wheels on ur cutting table would b fantastic, then u could move it around & not be cutting up against one wall🙂 IF ur ever after a 'white' shade.. I searched and searched for the right white that was still nice with warm timber etc and not too stark. I ended up choosing Dulux 'Natural White' and VERY happy with it. I'm a fellow Aussie.. Great to see u have ur own property now, all very exciting making it ur own.. Enjoy the process 🌸💝 ps- u mentioned painting ur steel beams in an accent colour.. with those beams do u really want to make a 'feature ' of them, and could make ceiling appear lower & cut into. Might b nice keeping the whole ceiling area the same white colour to just have them all blend away.. ?? Just an idea.. 😊
Ok, pink tulle is the only color of the three you favor my...😁. Don't mind me, I love bold colors on my walls and decor so unless something is obviously a color, as opposed to a shade of white, gray, or beige, I'm not digging it. But I admire your taste and color pallette for you colthes and fabrics, so I expect when you're finished the space will bevery classy and comfortable. 😘😘. And fill those cracks! Ask a bloke at the hardware store to help you solve problems in fixing up the cement areas. Or 2atch some TH-cam videos on remodeling. It's hard work, but you can do more than you imagine and save lots of money doing it yourself.
OK...here is my 2 cents worth...put the overlock and sewing machine under one window on the same long table. Use a chair with wheels to slide from one machine to the next(I do that). My machines make an L shape with 2 small tables. My last suggestion is to definitely cover up the ceiling with ply-wood. If the metal beams are in the way, work around them. It will keep the spiders and cobwebs hidden away. Thanks for letting me dream too. Can’t wait to see what your Dad does with bricking. I love red brick. 😊
Fluffy paint roller may be your friend here. I am suggesting this entirely from an episode of the block from maybe 10 years ago but they had to paint brick and the fluffy roller got the paint in between the bricks.
I love the space. The light is amazing. My thought just from having a basement in my house is how are you going to heat it in winter and how are you going to deal with the moisture that a basement can have. And lastly how are you going to keep the spiders from returning. I don't like spiders either. I'm sure you've thought of all this already but it's what I've thought since you first showed us the space.
I was also thinking you could try adding a little filler to the whole-y texture in the back walls - not to completely cover it over, but to make it easier to paint over. Or - not sure if this is in the budget, but could you build out a wooden bench along the back wall. Then you could sit at one end under the window as other people suggested - a little hand sewing nook, and display pretty things under the hanging clothes? Maybe it would cause the clothes to hang too high up. But I could imagine it like a shop display.
Yeah it will be cold in winter, but my last sewing space was freezing too so I’m pretty used to it.. hopefully because it’s still a smallish space a plug in heater will do the trick 🤞🏻
Loving it so far. Can't wait to see how it turns our. My one concern (having done lots of DIY) would be the moisture that can/will make its way through the brick. The last thing you'd want is for your beautiful work and fabrics to go mouldy. Was the primer you used a moisture sealer as well? Other than that, I'm loving the space you are creating!
Please make sure to test your windows for leakage. I live on the prairie and musch like the coast we get a lot of blowing rain. You might want to have sliders or wheels under the tables with you work stations so they can be moved away from the window quickly and easily.

You could use all three colours a cream on the ceiling a pink on the walls and then your accent colour. The rust beams you need a rust metal paint normal paint will flake off.
The little window area would be a lovely hand stitching spot with a comfy chair.

However, it remained very cold underfoot. So I was thinking maybe vinyl plank flooring or a sheet of vinyl glued down which come in some good patterns now even wood look. They are on huge rolls in Bunnings or flooring stores. Oh, also with the garage conversion, around the edges where I see that you have the flashing layer we ended up having to put a tar sealer because moisture was seeping through during heavy rain and mould grew. I have beamed ceiling in my cabin, I’ve put voiles up so that it looks a lot softer and homely and blinds up at the windows and curtains on the doors. It’s my favourite place to be.

This is going to be exciting to watch! I recently made a sewing space out of a similar size and shape room. I, too, put my long cutting table along one wall. One thing I wish I would have done differently was to position my table so I could walk around the two long sides. It would have made cutting so much easier. Enjoy the process!

Not crazy at all, I was in two minds for weeks about whether or not to paint it! In the end it was a practical choice though because the light that bounces around the room now because of the paint is incredible (and much needed for filming in the space)

Beautiful! Congratulations on all the amazing progress so far! I can relate to the overwhelm of starting a big project like this. Hopefully getting the space cleaned out and undercoat painted gave a good bit of kinetic energy to this massive undertaking, and the rest of the project just keeps rolling for you! So excited to see what you do with the space, and it’s nice to have some design and DIY content that is sewing-adjacent sprinkled into your channel.
I’m keen to see what you decide to do for the floors, and of course all the decorative bits and tweaks as time goes on and you get used to the space. What a treat to have that fruit tree right outside your door! It all just looks so delightful.
Getting the undercoat done has definitely inspired me to keep going! Now the fun projects can start!!
🌿🌸 Personally, I would highly recommend to fill in all the open spaces between the floor and walls with concrete, reseal the windows, attach a seal onto the bottom of the door, paint all of the walls a off white shade to bounce more lighting around the room and to be able to showcase your pieces more accurately, paint the ceiling polar white but paint the beams a different shade that you would like to make them stand out more, maybe put in wood frames inside the windows and around thin carved trim around the outside edges of the windows that could be painted the same color as the ceiling beams, put in faux wood vinyl or real wood flooring because paint will peel up all over the place since it’s the floor and not the walls or ceiling, locking door knob, window locks, curtains and also install a fold down ironing table and other space saving things you will need to save more space so that can do so much more with the estate of the room to build your dream sewing room.🌸🌿

You will be amazed at how your accents will not only pop but also make your neutral walls take on the hue you are looking for. Go for the darker pink color! It's still a light color for the camera and space, and would give the space some color and actual personality.
Also if you insist on painting that bar thing for the cutting table, mabey stain it with a similar tone to what it is currently just to fix it up and make it look nice, or even stain it to match those light tan cabinets you already have instead of painting it white. Mabey some of those beams on the walls could also be stained a light color instead of white as well?
Oh yes, the bricks are a great idea for neatening off the back wall of the room. You could try to build a sort of ledge to display things? White bricks and wood are a lovely combination.

Just watching you talk about your plans - when you’re putting your pegboard behind your cutting table, make sure you don’t have to stretch too much to get anything. I had a similar set-up (including a higher table) but had to rearrange things so I wasn’t putting extra pressure on my back while reaching over the table (I had scissors, rotary cutters, etc. on the board). Good luck with it all!
That’s a really good point and something I’ve been thinking about too. I was thinking maybe half the peg board behind the cutting table for less frequently used items and half the peg board with nothing in front for my more everyday use items 🤔

Wow, I'm so interested that you've come across my feed today. My sewing space is almost the same as yours, right down to the one timber wall! I have brick walls on the other three sides and windows all round. Despite being under my house, I was surprised at how much light comes in, particularly winter mornings when the sun is so much lower. I've wall mounted some mirrors to help bounce the light around. I even have a similar cutting table, whereby I've utilised an old map cupboard that was left behind and laid an old conference table that I picked up at a garage sale for $30 on top. I would recommend putting it on wheels as I move it around a lot more than I thought I would. I don't know what area you live in, but do have a look at possible damp and water ingress. I live in northern NSW where it's hot and humid and given the heavy rains and flooding we've had in recent years, my sewing room sometimes feels a little damp. I use an dehumidifier when I need to. You might live in a much drier area than me, so it may not be an issue. I'll follow your journey with interest!

My house growing up had the exact same style of room underneath, floorboard ceiling and all! I also love the tree/bush by your windows!
It's looking great already! Choosing paint colours is so hard...there is SO much choice. I love the raw cotton colour. Great job Janelle.
Laminate floor boards would be my recommendation for flooring in concrete. We did it in our basement and there is a measurable temperature difference as you do need to lay down a thin layer of foam underneath when installing.
Also Rustoleum paint or an equivalent for the iron as it will prevent the rust from bleeding through, and prevent further rusting.
Highly recommended casters on your cutting table so you can put it against the wall when you want or you can move it out to walk all the way around it. Possibly consider it for all the furniture for ease of moving around in the room to find what works, and cleaning.

If you haven’t already, I would try and keep the wall opposite the windows as light as possible, and I would paint the ceiling as bright a white as you can. A filmographer told me that you should use your ceiling as a massive reflector if you can, point your lights at it, as it creates natural diffusion.
You can get special rust killer for the beams (in the uk it’s called hammerite) and you can also get special primer that blocks the rust, it’s a little more expensive usually, but worth it!
One thing did occur to me, it might not be an issue in Tasmania, I’m not familiar with the climate so I’m not sure, but the walls look single depth? Uninsulated? Do you need to be cautious about damp/mildew in the winter? I’m thinking of your garment rail against that wall specifically. In the UK I know I would have to add a layer of damp blocking primer and maybe I would actually board out that wall just in case (though obviously completely different climate and we’re known for being damp! 😂) might not be a concern in your location but thought I’d mention it just in case.
I painted my concrete floor in a checker board pattern...so fun!! Border the room then tape it out to paint the squares or diamond shapes. Just an idea😊

I like my reg machine and my serger close together so you don't have to get up and down and move to a separate table ..I suggest an L table under the window and you just have to pivot your chair..don't forget your ironing board..isn't it fairly hot down under...maybe an air conditioner in the smaller window...then a few heaters for your colder months...and lots of outlets...

I'm so excited to see how this comes out! What an absolutely beautiful space. They make paint specifically for coating metal so that it doesn't rust and bleed through- it'll be clearly labeled in the paint shop. This looks so good already.
Have you thought of an epoxy finish on the floor. It comes in different colors and seals the concrete too. The space looks so much better now. All your hard work is paying off!

We used a cork click lock flooring in our living room recently - pros are that is is insulating and didn’t require an additional underlay on concrete, Firm but soft and warm. Definitely nice for a sewing room! We went with champagne sand as the colour and I think you would love it too.
A large mirror in the space to help reflect light and for dress fitting is a must - which makes me think if there is room for a screen to make a changing area that would be helpful too (could also be handy for hiding camera gear etc).

Beams: wire brush to get the flakes off then anti rust then prime then paint. Floor: rustoleum garage floor coating is fab for bare concrete. 🙂
Yes you need a special paint for steel… looks lovely though….go for the more pinky paint…so much more rosary apparel colour….
Looking clean and bright ☀️ IDK if Bunnings sells a similar 2 part epoxy paint like we used on our concrete garage floor here in the US? Our floor paint came with colored sprinkles that you toss over the wet paint, that when dry creates a terrazzo look that is durable and easy to mop clean. Epoxy paint is an inexpensive DIY option that could easily be extended with more paint or covered over with new floating floors after you expand in phase 2. Excited to see phase 1 as it comes together.😻

As soon as you mentioned your plans for the layout and your cutting table, I thought you should check out @ShannonMakes' recent video about her sewing table that she customized/upcycled ...and then you shared the bar that was left with the house and now I think you should *definitely* check it out 😅 If it's not too much taller, wheels could be a great addition before painting! Then you could make use of the peg board back or keep it empty and turn the table to protect whatever you keep in the cubbies from that morning sun ☀️

Here’s a few hints that I learned the hard way. Especially when painting on brick or concrete and well the metal. Seal first. Then primer. My walls literally “drank” up all my hard effort of priming and then painting. Should have sealed that up first. Save $$ on paint for sure. Plus after I did that all important step. I too was impatient and just wanted to get on with it. Walls were splotchy. Rust on the metal definitely “peeked” through. Like I said. Lesson learned.

I see someone has already suggested wheels for your cutting table, I certainly second that!
Also, you could install a larger top on the bar to give you a grater area for spreading fabric when cutting. If this feels too intrusive it could be a flap on hinges that can be employed as needed. (Like old fashioned side or dining tables).This could be affixed to the back so it doesn’t impede access to the shelves. You could simply wheel the table out and raise the extension.
You may need sone “Killrust” products for those metal beams. Available in the paint section at Bunnings.
I’m so looking forward to the next episode of this makeover. It’s so exciting to have a dedicated workspace at home but completely separate to your living space. I have one that, like yours, requires a lot of preparation before I can make it my own but I’m already collecting bits and pieces, such as carpet tiles to make the concrete floor a bit more snug, and furniture. All very exciting!

Perhaps some canvas fabric or gauze panels billowing across the ceiling between the beams? And white fairy lights all over the ceiling. Picture frame the windows so it looks like paintings hanging on the wall from hooks with ribbons. Hanging wicker baskets here and there could hold a plant or store useful items

What a little bit of paint can do! Keep the paint as light as possible to reflect all the light ;). Love your new house! I have a question, I’m from a completely different climate, but where I live this “unfinished” floor would cause the room to get moist. Which is of course not something you want in any room especially where you keep fabric. But maybe where you live this isn’t a problem. Looking forward to see the progress! ☺️
Congrats on your DIY job. You can totally do it yourself. I did a whole house by myself. No men. If you don't know stuff ask. Don't be scared. I found mitre 10 so help for my house. Your so lucky your Dad can help with the bricks. I just have to ask does it feel damp in there at all? Just something you definitely need to take into consideration and the rusty rails, you can buy a specific paint to stop the rust bleeding through. You'll need a steel brush to prepare first but definitely go ask about that just incase I've messed up my info. It's looking great. Don't doubt yourself. You can do it by yourself. ❤❤
To create your hanging “rod,” you could use black plumbing pipes. You could put the flanges on the ceiling and bring the pipe down to the correct height then add 90 degree electrical conduit elbows or black pipe elbows if available. Then run the pipe along the length of the space adding “t” pieces and running up to the ceiling as support. I used this pipe to create some outdoor curtain rods and it worked like a charm. The only caveat is to be careful not to get your fabric up against the pipe as the black rubs off, but that shouldn’t happen if you are using hangers. Good luck! It looks great already.
8:30 that is something that has always stood out to me over the years of watching your videos is that I thought you must have great core strength to tolerate stooping over a cutting table for more than a few minutes!
I love your style. Something to consider is something to help with echoes like a lovely quilted wall hanging. Upholstered chairs. Things like that, maybe?😊
This is a lovely space. I keep looking at the cracks at the bottom of the wall and ceiling gaps and think..SNAKES! Please make sure every hole is sealed cos of snakes hiding or coming through the cracks and ceiling gaps. I can't wait to see the finished product.

The ideal thing to paint the rusted steel beams with is Evaporust or Ospho. I am sure y'all have something similar in Australia.

I would recommend a vinyl tile with self stick adhesive back for the floors. Easy to clean and easy to remove in the future for the eventual expansion.
Box in the steel beams with wood. The rust will eat though that paint. Love your ideas!

Have you checked that the space is weather/moisture proof and I noticed someone else mentioned sealing up small gaps to guard against mice! Its going to be so wonderful once its finished! Please keep track of the amount of time you spend on it so you can share with us what it took!

This looks awesome, what a fun project!! I reckon a feature wall at the back wall could look good for a pop of colour, like a deeper rosary pink than the cotton.
If you have a gramophone you should set up a little corner by that small window with a library to carry all your sewing books your gramophone and records with a cozy armchair. You could sit in that corner play vintage records, while you read or sew, it’ll give your sewing space such a 1940s vibe
You could glue down Autex garage carpet, it comes 1.8m wide and several colours and it’s great for areas where the floor may be damp, water won’t hurt it and scrubs clean with hot soapy water.
Idea: you could paint the insides of the windows/sills calico and the actual walls cotton, then you’d have your beigey neutral main color but pops of your more rosery pink? And be able to use them both!
Be sure to consider the height of the room. There is valuable storage space there. Think shelves with beautiful rattan baskets 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Congratulations on your new home. You have done a fabulous fix it up job so far. My only suggestion would have been to sandblast (by a professional) for the rust on the metal beams.
You could take advantage of the beams in the ceiling and have shelves/compartments built down off them, like, they would be almost hanging down per se. It would be good storage without taking up any floor space.
Hi Janelle, looking good. I have a lot of experience re paint colours and especially lighter colours. I also have 'raw cotton' in a living room. It is very much a 'beige' with no pink undertones. If u were to use it I'd definitely go half or quarter strength. I'd personally choose quarter strength. With ur area I think as light as possible would be best for filming etc. But IF u were wanting more of ur 'Rosery Apparel' colour palette then the 'calico' looks like a good choice, but I'd once again go half or quarter strength.. I also think the idea of wheels on ur cutting table would b fantastic, then u could move it around & not be cutting up against one wall🙂 IF ur ever after a 'white' shade.. I searched and searched for the right white that was still nice with warm timber etc and not too stark. I ended up choosing Dulux 'Natural White' and VERY happy with it. I'm a fellow Aussie.. Great to see u have ur own property now, all very exciting making it ur own.. Enjoy the process 🌸💝 ps- u mentioned painting ur steel beams in an accent colour.. with those beams do u really want to make a 'feature ' of them, and could make ceiling appear lower & cut into. Might b nice keeping the whole ceiling area the same white colour to just have them all blend away.. ?? Just an idea.. 😊
Ok, pink tulle is the only color of the three you favor my...😁. Don't mind me, I love bold colors on my walls and decor so unless something is obviously a color, as opposed to a shade of white, gray, or beige, I'm not digging it.
But I admire your taste and color pallette for you colthes and fabrics, so I expect when you're finished the space will bevery classy and comfortable. 😘😘. And fill those cracks! Ask a bloke at the hardware store to help you solve problems in fixing up the cement areas. Or 2atch some TH-cam videos on remodeling. It's hard work, but you can do more than you imagine and save lots of money doing it yourself.
In the end of the video, when colors a behind you, more pink color looks much better with you and your face🌸
OK...here is my 2 cents worth...put the overlock and sewing machine under one window on the same long table. Use a chair with wheels to slide from one machine to the next(I do that). My machines make an L shape with 2 small tables. My last suggestion is to definitely cover up the ceiling with ply-wood. If the metal beams are in the way, work around them. It will keep the spiders and cobwebs hidden away. Thanks for letting me dream too. Can’t wait to see what your Dad does with bricking. I love red brick. 😊
Fluffy paint roller may be your friend here. I am suggesting this entirely from an episode of the block from maybe 10 years ago but they had to paint brick and the fluffy roller got the paint in between the bricks.
I love the space. The light is amazing. My thought just from having a basement in my house is how are you going to heat it in winter and how are you going to deal with the moisture that a basement can have. And lastly how are you going to keep the spiders from returning. I don't like spiders either. I'm sure you've thought of all this already but it's what I've thought since you first showed us the space.
I was also thinking you could try adding a little filler to the whole-y texture in the back walls - not to completely cover it over, but to make it easier to paint over. Or - not sure if this is in the budget, but could you build out a wooden bench along the back wall. Then you could sit at one end under the window as other people suggested - a little hand sewing nook, and display pretty things under the hanging clothes? Maybe it would cause the clothes to hang too high up. But I could imagine it like a shop display.

Yeah it will be cold in winter, but my last sewing space was freezing too so I’m pretty used to it.. hopefully because it’s still a smallish space a plug in heater will do the trick 🤞🏻
Loving it so far. Can't wait to see how it turns our. My one concern (having done lots of DIY) would be the moisture that can/will make its way through the brick. The last thing you'd want is for your beautiful work and fabrics to go mouldy. Was the primer you used a moisture sealer as well? Other than that, I'm loving the space you are creating!
Please make sure to test your windows for leakage. I live on the prairie and musch like the coast we get a lot of blowing rain. You might want to have sliders or wheels under the tables with you work stations so they can be moved away from the window quickly and easily.

You could use all three colours a cream on the ceiling a pink on the walls and then your accent colour.
The rust beams you need a rust metal paint normal paint will flake off.
