    Biggest tip: dont be too proud
    - look at used/certified pre owned cars
    -cars depreciate the most in the first 1-3 years
    - you may not he able to afford your dream car, that's okay. Dont screw yourself to get something you CANT afford
    - Shop around, you may get a car that isnt the exact color that you want but it could be 4k less

  • @DFrnkln06

    I went in 7 years ago today and I've seen a lot of people doing some of the same thing you mentioned, getting expensive cars they can't afford. My first car I got when I was a 09 Hyundai Sonata, there are some honest dealers out but most new airmen aren't patient enough to wait. I still have that car to this day and it did help boost my credit score up.

  • @mcesarey
    @mcesarey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    I agree with your financial advice to young airmen, but I don't totally agree that they should avoid fun cars. For many of them, their young, single years will be their only opportunity to own a fun car until their future kids leave the house. I'm pretty biased being a car guy, but I did drive cheap cars and avoided having a car payment until I was a TSgt. I'm an MTI now so I'll be sure to brief all my trainees about the car buying process.

    Craigslist is pretty good. I got both of my cars from there. My first car was an '03 Acura CL Type-S with Navigation and six-speed manual. It was kept in pristine condition by the previous owner and was only $3800. My second car is an '03 Infiniti G35 sedan, also a six-speed manual. It was a bit pricier, and not as well kept, but it runs very well. If you look around a bit, and you know what to look for as far as quality, you can find yourself a steal.

    So ever since I was a kid I've always had motorcycles, and right now I have four, three my dad and brothers use, one I have with me that I might try to work out riding rather then having to buy a car. What do you see around base as far as bikes go? I know you can have them and that there's a lot of rules for them, high viz vests, helmets, all that, but what do you see more as the experiance?

    My friend worked at a Jeep dealership and the salesmen were too quick to get me into a car they knew I couldnt afford. Luckily, two weeks later they called me in and changed my payments, which I couldnt afford so I got lucked out and didnt have to keep the car. But I learned a valuable lesson. DO NOT IMPULSE BUY A CAR AND FUCK DEALERSHIPS.

    I'm about to enlist after this semester,I'm a military brat mom retired from the Air Force & my dad did 2 years navy & 2 army during Vietnam then he was a locksmith on Lackland AFB for a few years,most people who have worked there 20+ years know him. My dad and older sister still live in San Antonio,I'm 20 and of course I want to buy a car after I enlist and get to tech school.Now I'm wondering if a used 09 Dodge Challenger would be too much for a first car. I know you said if I get a car to not buy one any higher than 10k. What would be the idea kind of car to go for,what do you drive for example? I'm also with usaa through my mom but when I get my own car I'll get my own policy.

    Should I keep my car? I'm currently leasing a car (almost two years in) that I really like, and would like to eventually just own a car one day that I no longer have to pay for (even if that means I'm not driving it for a while). HOWEVER, the company I'm leasing the car from said that if I'm going into the military, they offer an option where I can just give them back the car and break the lease with no penalties (except for losing the two years of payments I've already made).
    SO... is paying off the car a good investment? Or should I return it and figure out something later?

    What would you suggest doing about cars that we currently own before joining the Air Force? Is it worth it to keep it and ship it to your first duty station or have someone drive it to you? or would you recommend selling it during/after BMT?

    • @J.J.Thompson
      @J.J.Thompson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Grant Covington keep your car and ship it. I left mine back home cause I'm stationed overseas on an island and didn't want the rust to ruin my truck. so I bought a small commuter car but I regret not bringing my truck. the only downside is that you usually have to wait a month overseas for your car to arrive and maybe about 2 weeks to a month stateside. my opinion is to save your money and keep your car until it dies or you have money to afford to get a new car. Hope this helps!

  • @MontyJ804
    @MontyJ804 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm glad my parents live 4 hours from my duty station so when I go overseas I'm just going to take my car home. But I do really want the 10th generation Honda Civic it will be my 3rd Civic and so it's embedded in me lol But I rather save and put money towards more important things.

    Tip:
    Buy a beater car that lets you move around. pay cash. you most likely CANT afford the 5k car if you are starting out. save money pay off any debt first. then upgrade in 4-5 years to a 5k car since you should have promoted and earn a little bit more pay cash for it. and you should be good. Getting credit is overrated, debt is never good

I want something that'll be more fun than a Civic or a Camry. I always find myself trying to justify why I would "need" something like a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc.

      Jon Cash but it may be good to get your credit up that's why he is saying you can get a cheaper car with a monthly payment so in the future you will have better credit so maybe when you want a nicer car you will be able to get a lower interest rate

      +Cameron LA that I wouldn't be sure, it would be smarter to wait til after tech school when you find out where you'll be based, go on leave for a week or two and then ship your car to that base

    Great video, Buying an expensive car is the biggest mistake i see people make in the air force. For some reason people just think of the price of the car in monthly payments, instead of the total price. I know a guy who got suckered into a 20% interest rate on a $15k car, and his reasoning was "the monthly payments are low".

    Usually how long do you stay at tech school before you get stationed somewhere else? Just wanna know because wouldn't want to buy car then sell immediately if I go overseas to Japan or Korea, just would want to make my car experience at tech school worth it's while in time and money.

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Granados Tech school lengths depend on which AFSC you have, they can be a few weeks, or they can be longer than a year. It all depends. I would say most tech schools run about 2-4 months

    • @Nickisspanish17

      +WildBlueYonder thank you 👍🏼 also quick question, how long does it take you usually to edit the videos for your channel? Like in particular this video? I know it's only an 11 1/2 minute long but how much raw footage was there and how long it takes you to make a finished product, just curious because I'm going to be starting my own and want to do what you and a couple people are doing because I'm planning on joint the Air Force and want to document my before and after

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It usually takes about 1-2 hours to edit a video. This one in particular took me about 2-3 hours, I can't remember exactly how long. But raw footage was about 45 minutes, and then I widdled it down to about 11.

    Ok so my phone service sucks and I need wifi. I didn't listen to the video yet. I will. But my question is, do you need a car when you're stationed? Is it hard to sell it when you have to leave for another duty station? Are there cars on base that you can use if you don't have one?
