I use a damp meter every day on motorhomes and as you found you can get plenty of false positives, I have just bought a thermal imaging camera to quickly scan large areas. Chris.

I’ve never thought of using the thermal imaging camera (we already have one we use for videos) do you notice enough of a difference in temperature to indicate moisture? I think our FLIR1 would struggle.
For example I don’t the FLIR1 would show the damp kitchen paper behind the plywood as the surface of the plywood would be the same temp as the rest of it. Where as the penetrating RF used in the moisture meter easily detects it (albeit you need to discount part of the structure causing it)

@@ExploreVanUK I put a video out the other day using mine on damp. Now mine is a cheap chinese one not a FLIR (which I have had the oportunity to play around with a £12K one in a van) but it helps in tracing the point of water ingress.

👍 I'm guessing for established damp, where it has already soaked into the surface material then you may see a surface temperature difference, not sure that it would give you early warning of damp building up behind the surface though, like the RF type meters do.
We used our FLIR1 for checking insulation / heat loss in this video th-cam.com/video/a9DNnmBTfvI/w-d-xo.html - a really useful tool.

Saw your video yesterday and bought the meter, arrived today, not impressed at all. My 18mth old 'van was serviced by the manufacturer two months ago with no damp reported, this meter today recorded >40% in literally dozens of areas, yet 5cm away or even less the meter showed zero. If I actually had damp in that many areas I think I'd be aware of it

Hi, it does sound similar to our experience (shown in the video) with it indicating on the structure of the van.
What type of Van is it? Panel van conversion / Coach Build?
Are the areas it is indicating on at regular intervals and horizontal or vertically consistent? As this would suggest it is something structural that is triggering it.
Obviously the manufacturer would know the areas where the struture are, so could discount these readings when doing their measurements.
With any of the damp / moisture meters I have found it is variance rather than initial readings that give you a heads up to an issue - eg if you find a new area is indicating next time you test it / in the future.
      Hope that helps
