  • Follow an iconic Shay logging locomotive as it brings a load of logs down from the log camp to the sawmill on my HO scale Clear Lake Timber Company model railroad. Watch the Shay come down the hill, reverse the train on a switchback, drop the log cars at the sawmill, and then pull away to await its next assignment. The Shay locomotive is from Bachmann (with Soundtraxx Tsunami II sound installed) and the log cars are from Kadee.

I think those Shays are the best looking steam locomotives. Video was a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Again..not only am I amazed at your work.. I just can't believe how few have commented on your layout.. It begs the question.." What are the viewers expecting to see"?... Thank you for sharing. I look forward to future videos. Tom

I have a couple Shays a 4 or 5 Heislers as well. This video is great motivation for me to get back to working on my own layout!

Amazing layout, the next I build I think will have a logging portion with some switchbacks

Beautiful work, what make is that Shay? Is that a Blackstone model? Runs AMAZINGLY well! Brass? Thanks in advance.

The Shay is from Bachmann, with a Tsunami II decoder squeezed in. It has some bad gears (don't they all?) resulting in one or more unpowered axles. As a result, it might not be able to haul those loads up the hill, but does OK on downhill or flat. I usually have it assigned to switching duty. My Rivarossi Heisler is a great runner and seems bulletproof, so it usually gets the road work.

Bachmann products are junk and will never last and run well. Not worth the time to try and fix them .@@CarlBrainerd

@@MartinSBrown-tp9ji I have to agree. I have three Bachmann Shays. They ran for a while, but now all three of them have bad gears and can't pull themselves up a grade, let along any cars. Since I have one of the NWSL regear kits I am trying to install it in one of the Shays. The jury is still out on how that will turn out. It is very tedious. I did have a Bachmann 3-truck Climax. After a while it quit and I returned it under warranty. They said they did not have the parts to fix it, so they send me a new 2-truck Climax in exchange. Now it is bad, too, acting like some internal gear is slipping or stripped. I'm done with Bachmann, for sure. I have an MDC Shay kit on the shelf (been there for 30 years or so, I guess), along with the NWSL regear kits. One of these days I'll get around to trying my luck with it. I saw that Broadway Limited will be releasing a 4-truck Shay next year, but they advertise 22" minimum radius and mine is 18", so that's not an option. It's tough going for Shay fans....

I have been in model railroading for 65 years (I'm 87now). Me and my friends have never wanted to invest on all Bachmann products. They manufacture pure junk and are not worth having. The best shays are the brass ones. They are fixable and don't shrink, melt, crack and fall apart. All plastic model engines will not last as long as I did (87 years) @@CarlBrainerd

Is that Gorre & Daphetid box car from John Allen's layout?

Paul, no, not from John's layout. I'm not that lucky. I have a couple of those G&D boxcars that were a special run offer from NMRA some years ago. They are actually specially lettered kits from one of the common manufacturers (I forget which one), with molded-on grabs & ladders and very limited underbody detail. But I think they look OK with a little weathering. Once you see the G&D lettering you don't look any further! Carl
