Ladybower Reservoir's Hidden Villages - Derwent and Ashopton, Derbyshire, U K

  • After the UK's hot summer, the water level at Ladybower Reservoir was so low that the lost villages of Derwent and Ashopton which were both flooded in the 1940's to form the Ladybower Reservoir, could now be seen.
Ladybower was built between 1935 and 1943 by the Derwent Valley Water Board to supply water to Derby, Sheffield, Leicester and Nottingham, UK.
I think the last time I saw parts of the lost village was in 1980's after another drought. I can only vaguely remember it so decided to take the opportunity of having another look.
The old pump house is still relatively intact. I didn't go too close as it was very muddy. Over the other side I saw the remains of Derwent Hall and parts of the church but mostly it was rubble. The cellar of the hall was still more or less complete but too dark to see down it. You could also see the outlines of the rooms and pathways.
At the moment it is attracting a lot of people, so it's better to go early morning. Overall, a very interesting visit.

This is very fascinating. How often are the ruins available to see? Each summer or just when the area is in drought? The spiral run off is very interesting as well where does that water go when it is overflowing?

Hi. It's a rare occurrence to see the ruins. I've only seen them once before when we had a long dry spell. The water goes into the Derwent.

I’m going in August so I’m hoping to see the ruins as my ancestors lived there!

The water has filled back up now I think. It's not often you get to see the hidden villages unless it's been a hot summer. I got lucky.

That building at the beginning of the video, there's lots of them around, looking exactly the same, they usually house water pumps
