We had a tawny frogmouth on our walkies route that my dog would play with every night. They'd have a chat. Loudly. At 2 o'clock in the morning sometimes ( I'm a shift worker,) here's an example of the dialogue:
    Dog: Arf arf!
    Tawny: Crrrrackleackleackleararararara!
    Dog: Hwoo woo woo woo?
    Tawny: Currrakakakakakakakaka?
Etc. You get the idea. I'd have to stand on the street corner and wait as they'd catch up. 🙄😆

Loved seeing this as I recently had a Tawny frogmouth encounter whilst on a week stay in Port Macquarie (NSW). One was sitting for hours in a tree in full sight next to a 2nd level patio
I managed to get a few great photos including a yawn showing the frog like mouth, I was really surprised however to find out that it isn't actually an owl as they look so much like one.
The drawing is great too !!

Tawny Frogmouths are the best. I love listening to them at night, especially now on winter on a foggy night. (For those who don't know what they sound like, you really need to look it up.)
Every house I've lived in has had a friendly neighbourhood Tawny Frogmouth. This house is the first where their superior stealth capabilities have failed - it doesn't quite work so well on a power pole... Still, they're an absolutely amazing bird. And I'm grateful that I live in their territories.

As an American expat who has lived in Sydney for over 20 years, one of the happiest moments of my life was when my daughter and I were sitting on my bed at night and one landed on the fence outside the window. I lived in the centre of suburban Sydney and I’ve loved these birds for yonks, but had never seen one in the wild until this moment. It took so much self control to not scare it away by squealing with glee.

Tawny frogmouths might look like owls, but some of the other frogmouths look less like owls and much more like potoos. And in fact, this makes a lot of sense; recent evidence demonstrates that frogmouths might be closer relatives of potoos than they are of nightjars. Behaviorally-speaking, frogmouths also have a lot of similarities with potoos.

Huh, I always knew them as owls. Learn something new every day. We used have a Tawny that frequented our backyard when we moved in our house 20 years ago, it literally pop in to say hello. I think that the previous tenants of the house used to feed it, coz every night it hang out in a tree out the back, go nuts when it saw one of us and then wait still with it's mouth open, after a little while it would fly away. One day it just stopped coming, I imagine since we weren't feeding it, it moved on. It's probably dead now but I still sometimes think of the friendly little fella.

Thanks for profiling one of our fantastic Aussie nightbirds. We actually have 3 species of frogmouth: Tawny, Marbled and Papuan - Tawny is the only endemic with the latter two also occurring in PNG.

One of the best things about living in regional Australia is noticing a pair of frogmouths sitting on the fence post watching you. They are adorable wee birds.

A terrific expose of these adorable and strange birds. I am lucky enough to have them visit and nest in my garden each year.

They pick the exact trees, colours and contours in the wild. Amazing creatures 😍

They look like what would happen if you asked an owl expert to draw a kookaburra

Great video. I have a family of 4 in my tree at the moment. The last time I saw a pair of eyebrows like that, Was little Johnny Howard !

I noticed they also do that same head bob thing like owls do. Very cool birds, glad to hear they aren't really endangered.

Yay, my favourite bird ever. So glad you covered these little guys.
I still love encountering them just gazing off at nothing in particular

We have the Urutau (or Potoo irc), which completely accepted it's lack of nest building abilities, they just lay the egg in suited branches or stumps
