@@zoomzike before I watched the other video, I thought this one was an overview of the whole series, since you could've chosen the original Mario Party logo because it doesn't have a number and the 6 minute intro video could've been just a very condensed version/thesis.

I find it makes a huge difference in "Cast Aways" if you're the farthest player on the right. The sweet spot for chests is just a fraction of a second after they enter the screen, and you always have first crack at them. Easy to rack up huge totals.
Oh yeah, the only reason I didn't mention that is because multiple treasure chests pass by at a time, so you can't hog alllllllllllll of them. It's still a great spot though.
This was absolutely excellent. I feel like I'm ready for MLG Mario Party now. I used to play MP1 on an almost daily basis with my brother when we where kids, only ever stopping because we needed time to heal after carving crater sized flesh pits in our palms (Tug 'o War was serious business!). I actually think MP1 is one of the better MP games out there to this day. Naturally there's a lot of nostalgia talking here, but I also think the minigames where simple in a good way (although some of the 1v3 minigames are kinda bullshit...), and the boards all have both nice visual themes and gimmicks that sets them apart. It also feels more like a competition than many of the later entries do, despite having random elements like they all do (perhaps due to the ability to lose coins during minigames, thus making them feel more consequential). I'm glad they removed the stick spinning minigames after this one, though. So many controllers sacrificed...
As someone who has literally never played any Mario Party game ever, this was fascinating & I loved every second of it. The amount of time & effort that must have gone into this is mind-boggling. It is a CRIME that you don't have more subscribers. Thanks for the awesome content.
For Mushroom mixup, I think you can cheese it with a ground pound once it gets going real fast. The midair twirl actually lasts longer than the platforms stay underwater.
A favorite strategy is to squish someone with a ground-pound when everyone's on the center mushroom and the other mushrooms are coming back up, because the direction of the bounce-back won't matter when all the mushrooms are there to catch you, and your squishing might stall that player from reaching the next mushroom in time...?
Mushroom Mix Up gets insane if you and one other can survive, because it eventually gets so fast that you don't even need to be on the correct color, just make sure you are in the air while the mushrooms are down.
Having your coins taken away from you if you lose at certain mini-games is something I wish they'd bring back in later releases. It REALLY adds to the tension when you know you have something to lose instead of just something to win
I really appreciate these videos. listening to video essays really helps me with my anxiety, helps provide me with constant thinking points as I go throughout my day, so thank you. aside from my personal thanks, you seriously deserve more views, man. the sheer effort you put into writing alone deserves more credit, much less the time it would take to edit and put a video of this length together.
This is a very well constructed analysis and walkthrough of Mario Party. I’m surprised that you don’t have that many subscribers with this quality content. Can’t wait until the next Identifying Luck.
This is one of the best videos I've seen this year. It's like a trip to my childhood (MP3 to be more exact, but I still get some nostalgia with any other MP game), and the fact that you described and showed every single map, minigame and some trivia as a bonus, it's perfectt! I'm looking forward to the next videos in this series because I really really dig MP stuff
Two years late to this video, but this is one of the most detailed and fun videos I've ever watched. I applaud the effort you've gone through to create this and all your videos!! Thank you for this!😻
This was the most in-depth dive into Mario Party I've ever seen, and I spent a few months just mapping star spaces in my free time. I can't wait for the rest of them. It'll be the most comprehensive guide to the series out there.
I'm insanely excited for the Mario Party 5 episode, my friends and I have been playing it a lot and we can really push our games to the next level with this
i know most of the tips, if not all, in this video by just playing the game for years, but for some reason just listening to you talk about every detail is just cool and relaxing, maybe it's just the way you explain everything
This an extremely in-depth analysis that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Thank you so much for putting in the work to do this. Being the nerd that I am, I did spot at least a couple of errors, and will make corrections on this comment if I spot an error. I will edit as I rewatch. 1:48 The coins stolen are actually 1-20, though in my experience the coins stolen tend to lean towards less than 10 more frequently than more. 4:00 I have NEVER seen the cursor land on these in MP1, either on my game or on video. Though infrequent, I've seen it happen regularly on 2 or 3, but until I see it happen on 1 myself, I contend that it is impossible. If anyone has footage of this occurring on MP1 please show me in a comment reply. I'd love to see it. 12:08 Actually, while this is the only MP1 board to feature multiple Boos, multiple boards in MP2 have multiple Boos, as well. Off the top of my head, I know Space Land and Bowser Land have 2 Boos, and that Horror Land has 4 (2 day and 2 night), plus a Big Boo spot at night that behaves differently from the others. Adding to the madness, the 2 nighttime Boos in Horror Land are actually quite close to each other, so a lucky player(or a clever one using items) can get him twice in 1 turn. 15:28 Peach's Birthday Cake isn't sweet. I hate it. No, I'm not salty that last time I played it I got stuck in the upper right corner on back to back lottery tries. I'm not. OK, maybe I am. My tears make the formerly sweet board salty. My bad. 16:27 The player going first is not necessarily at an advantage, because the lottery doesn't reset until every seed is drawn. If the first player gets Bowser, then the three Toads have to be drawn before Bowser can be drawn again. So the chances of each player getting screwed on the first cycle is equal. 18:24 It's worth mentioning here that, regardless of game length, it's better to get a plant early in the game than late. It stays there until it steals a star, so if nobody lands on it, it's wasted coins. NEVER buy a plant near the end of a game unless you have loads of money to burn or are desperate for a steal to have a chance to win at all. Load up on them early and then go for the coin star toward the end. 30:05 There are 3 junctions you pay with, but the one on top that you circled is the Bowser vs Boo one that you don't pay with. The third junction is in the right side of the winding path. 35:20 Uhh... how did they tie? I'm pretty sure ties are impossible for dice rolls in this game. Emulator glitch? 35:43 MP4 has nine 1 vs 3 minigames. MP1 has by far the fewest 2 vs 2 games, not 1 vs 3. 42:40 In my experience, faster mashing means faster movement. This is evidenced by the fact that I move noticeably faster than AI in this game. The quicker you can get to places, the better your chances of victory. 44:17 These numbers tell you how many times you can hit the block, but at the end of this game, your coins earned in board game play are actually reduced to half of what you collected in the minigame. Minigame Island is the exception, as it's the very first level so it has to be easy. Otherwise, it would take an above average performance to even net 10 coins, which is undesired in an easy opening level. 53:12 Again, if someine has footage of any AI losing this minigame, I'd love to see it, because I have never seen this happen, not even on the easy difficulty. 56:10 Even though the music stops at a random time, you can hold the control stick directly towards the center while the music is playing at no penalty. This will let you start your movement to the chest on frame 1 regardless of music timing. I wish this game got a remake that penalized you for doing this because it's so cheap. LOL 58:21 Worth mentioning: If you have the bulb and all 3 teammates are possessed, either make a beeline for the socket if it is visible or let a player take the bulb from you and then IMMEDIATELY punch that same player. Put yourself between the player you are giving it to and the big Boo so that the possessed player keeps walking in your direction, making it easier for you to punch them. Remember: Only Boos can possess you, not possessed players. Also, if you want a certain player to lose coins in board game play and you start with the bulb, then commit suicide at the start. It's hilarious. 58:42 Actually, players caught by the big Boo do not earn coins for a successful run, but they don't lose any either, unlike if the bulb is lost. 1:12:06 Worth mentioning: If it looks like certain sides are getting sudden bursts of strength, guess what, they are. The river ebbs and flows alternately to the left and right over the course of the game. Getting a feel for this may help influence when you rotate harder and save a little skin, pain, and plastic. 1:21:17 The middle chest in the 3rd row is worth 5 coins, not 3, so if the opponent gets the big 10 coin chest, this is your next biggest target. 1:26:12 Uh Mario whut is u doin? 1:32:26 Actually, the coins DO count even if you fall, it's just that falling is worth -5 coins, so a bag plus a fall is worth a net change of 0 coins. A bag, 2 coins, and a fall is worth 2 coins. A fall and coin is -4 coins, and so on.
It's been a long time since I played Eternal Star, but maybe the tie restriction is only on player-versus-player die rolls? The real emulator glitch I noticed was the number failing to decrease as characters walked, unless that was a cheat used to make players walk farther for more map footage.
Wonder why this is getting popular all of a sudden. :o I'm glad it did though, since that's how I found it! Very detailed video - and surprisingly engaging. Here are a few tidbits that can help a little more... Apologies in advance if I missed them being mentioned in the video, or if comments brought them up! -In Piranha's Pursuit, there are vines at the top. The skating player can jump into these vines for a little boost. I dunno if it actually gives them any more room for error, but it looks impressive. -In Wario's Battle Canyon, pause buffering can help you land on exactly the space you want while the target is randomly moving around them. Pause as soon as the target moves. If it's the space you want, unpause and immediately press A. If not, unpause briefly, then pause as soon as it moves again. ...Of course, this might be seen as cheating, especially if you're playing with other humans. It also takes some practice. -Without pause buffering, you can still have a little bit of influence. Your reflexes most likely aren't fast enough to press A while the target is on a specific space... but you might be able to press A when the target has moved to a second space, but before it moves to a third space. So, if there's a particular space you really *don't* want to end up on, press A as soon as you see the target on that space. By the time you've reacted, it will have moved away from that space. ...Though if you're too slow, the target might also move to a third space by the time you press A - and it *could* easily be the same space that you're trying to avoid. That said, if you're fast enough even 1 time out of 5, it improves your odds of avoiding said space.
I was wondering about its spike in popularity too. I think it's because TH-cam promoted some of my other videos so it's making rounds to a few older ones. I did forget about those vines in Piranha's Pursuit, my bad! I'm not sure how optimal it is to pause during Wario's Battle Canyon, but that would've been a good tip to mention as well, even if it bugs the heck out of whoever you're playing with. Glad you enjoyed!!
@@zoomzike Didn't they make an attachment for the controllers when players hurt their hands spinning the control stick? Or was it something else? I remember they changed something on a controller when people complained..
Quality content. This is one of those things you’d always assumed someone documented in video form already but here we are. Look forward to the rest whenever they may be
Amazing video! As a kid, I thought I knew everything there is to know about the game, but it seems that there was far far more stuff that I didn't know about. Watched the entire video and loved every bit of it
Amazing watch. I feel like I learned so much about a game I thought I already knew almost everything about! Seriously worth the full watch, and looking forward to Mario Party 2!
I actually learned a bunch about this game throughout the course of making the video, there were a lot of details just waiting to be uncovered! Glad you enjoyed, Mario Party 2's gonna be a blast!
I love how you keep saying "try to land on X", like we'd have a choice on most boards. Great channel with a big passion about my favourite games. Wish you success in the future!
I don't have a clue of how I ended up here but if I've watched the first 51:07 minutes might as well see it all through the end. Nice video, never played Mario Party 1 but it is helping me get an idea of how this game works
The original Mario Party isn't the _greatest_ game but it does have its moments, so I'm glad I helped you learn how it works. Thanks for the kind words!
you don't hate chance time, you *fear* it. I must say in terns of board dynamics and strategys this game has probably the best boards. A remake of this game would be very cool
I mean most of the boards here are pretty underwhelming. It very much has first game syndrome for most of these boards(with Wario's Battle Canyon and Peach's Birthday Cake both being pretty crap for different reasons, the former is one of the worst Mario Party boards period lol.) The board designs are generally very basic here though and not having any items to work with hurts them quite a bit and hinders a lot of strategic play in favor of RNG being the main decider. It doesn't help that a number of these boards have had their gimmicks done again except better on account of them being in games where items were present, like Peach's Birthday Cake being done better with Pagoda Peak in 7 and Goomba's Booty Boardwalk in 8, Mario's Rainbow Castle being worse than Castaway Bay in 6 and Luigi's Engine Room being done better as Woody Woods in 3
Subscribed for this video and this video alone. Not enough people analyse Mario Party on the internet to this detail. Looking forward to future editions in this series!
This is one of my favorite games of all time and I really thought I saw and knew everything about it before I came across that video. Thank you so much for this amazing piece, I really can't wait for the next installments!
Gonna rewatch this series again because it’s fantastic and I can’t express my immense appreciation for the time and effort it must’ve taken to make these videos
Someone hwo does a 1 and a half hour breakdown of mario party deserves more than 11k subs. That's some quality content right here. Hope your channel takes off.
OH MY FUCKING GOD I LOVE THIS SERIES. I'm so glad this was put in my recommended vids. I love your narration style. I can imagine analysis videos like this take FOREVER to make, but I seriously cannot fucking WAIT for the rest of this series. Thanks for doing this.
At least for where I'm at right now, it seems like the titles after this first one won't take as long to complete because there's a template to go off of for them. Which is good! I'm glad you're looking forward to them!
I know this upload is old but it's timeless ! You did not cut any corners ! Covered all areas of the game to the fullest , you really set the tone/standards for Mario Party explanation videos . On top of that you make the game easy to understand and give tips to play the best game possible ! *I bet it's not fun playing against you* 🤣
I love these kinds of videos, and you're doing an absolute killer job at it as well! I can't wait to watch and/or fall asleep to every single one of these you release, lol. Very nice to listen to. It's sort of like Pannenkoek, but with Marioparty! Keep up the amazing work.
This video is more like "A comprehensive guide to optimal strategy and tactics in Mario Party 1" than just "Identifying Luck". Pretty interesting, although mainly just in an academic sense for me since I've never actually played the original Mario Party (3 is the only one I played a significant amount of).
Oh it's definitely that as well! In the video before this one, I get a little more specific with what I'm covering: th-cam.com/video/MMVUBbDlhD4/w-d-xo.html Mario Party 3's awesome!!
That perfect victory in Whack-a-Plant was the best way to finish the in-depth look at _all_ of the mini-games in this game. Great display of skill and one of the highest possible amounts of coins you can win in _any_ mini-game, ever, followed by that oh-so-sweet Perfect Victory/New Record jingle! Even 20 years on, that jingle is still my favourite one in the _entire_ series. Nothing says "You've completely mastered this mini-game!" or "Best team effort ever!" (or even, "We just royally screwed the poor sap on the Bowser Space!" in the case of Bowser's Face Lift) quite like it! EDIT: I honestly had *no* idea that the "perfect victory" jingle could even be _heard_ in Whack-a-Plant until I saw this video. Even back when I played that mini-game and somehow managed to get all 36 coins in it, I swear I only heard the regular "solo victory" jingle.
Ay, All 3 Mario party’s are getting added to switch N64. The first Mario party was always my favorite for the N64 but I lost it when I was younger. I’m so happy I’ll be able to play this again.
I didn't even play any Mario Party aside from the one for DS, but the throughness, editing and explanation kept me hooked. Great job, and I'll wait for when you'll do the DS one :D
Absolutely excellent breakdown! ...of almost absolutely everything. I can think of only two things you forgot to mention: Star Spaces - Deactivated Star Spaces turn into Chance Time spaces. I do not know if they remain that way forever or only until all the Star Spaces are cycled through. Piranha's Pursuit - You can jump onto the vines to swing from them. I am unaware if this is faster. Can't wait to see you do my main man Mario Party 2!
I'm more upset that I didn't mention that Star Spaces tidbit. It's not a detail I was ignorant of, I've played plenty of Mario Party games and have used that piece of knowledge to my advantage. I think I convinced myself at some point of the video making process that I had mentioned it despite not doing so, which sucks ;~; Not mentioning the vines on Piranha's Pursuit doesn't bug me as much since the solo player can easily win without them, still would've been nice to have that detail in there thoooooooough. Really glad you enjoyed it! Mario Party 2 holds a special place in my heart as well!
@@zoomzike I don't think I congratulated you enough on that video, so let me express it again: I already knew most of this stuff about the game and still watched through the whole video. It's so great to see someone put this much time and work into detailing every little bit of a game, and I know that it'll be even more work as Mario Party starts to get more complicated in the next few entries. Keep up the great work, and I'll be sure to keep up with all of it and try to spread the word!
@@FlamezOfGamez This series really is gonna require more work as it goes on huh? ;~; Spreading the word would make me soooooooo happy, you have no idea how much I'd appreciate that, thank you so much for your kind words!!!
I’ve been playing the Mario party series sense I was 4 and I’ve learned many strategies and probability’s throughout the games but this video answered questions even I had. This nostalgic trip and informative video has gotten me hooked on your channel, hope to see more!
For a video called "Identifying Luck", I went in expecting to see a dive into how random number generation works in the mario party franchise, not a deep dive into every single mechanical aspect of the game, complete with tips and tricks. Absolutely amazing. Of all the things said here, the fact that you take Mario Party too seriously is most certainly true. I applaud that dedication, its a thing of beauty to behold.
Amazing video! Learned a lot more about the inner workings of MP1 thanks to this! One thing I want to add: In Desert Dash, if (for whatever reason) none of the players does anything after a while, the game will eventually end in a draw.
When I clicked this video I thought it said it was 34 minutes long. An hour and 6 minutes in, I realized it was an hour and 34 minutes, not 34 minutes. Then I was upset that I only had 28 minutes left in the video lmao. You've captivated me with your descriptions and detail, and made me feel like playing a game I've never even considered playing before. Thank you for this amazing content.
I find it funny that someone could listen to someone talk about a game like this having never played it. I'm almost flattered that you listened! Thanks!
The hilariously slow movement speed of the hammer holder combined with the surprisingly long distance coins travel when hit makes actually wielding the hammer very clunky and most of the time the players will either outpace an aggressive hammer by spreading out their block targets or the more likely option is that multiple opponents will wait just out of your hammer range at different angles so they can easily catch the falling coin bags. Either way you cut it, YOU DO NOT WANT THAT HAMMER
It can be pretty useful against players who don't have experience with that minigame though. They'll see you as being overpowered since you're the one person and try to run away instead of going on the offensive. I see what you mean though.
Gonna say it in the first MP video since it's currently playing. I've been straight up playing the whole "Identifying Luck" playlist for sleep ambience because your voice is oddly soothing.
Hey great video ZoomZike. I just thought I'd like to mention one thing about Piranha's Pursuit. As the skateboard rider during the mini-game you can also grab the vines you can see at timestamp 1:13:39. Just thought I'd let you know as it is something i learned only a couple of years ago and i'd thought i'd let you know as well. Once again great video and i can't wait for Mario Party 2!
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I'm glad it's not something that's _super_ useful though or else I'd feel extra bad. Thanks for letting me know and I'm glad you enjoyed!

The Shy Guy minigame...fucking hell.
I've had lots of games kick my ass, but Mario Party's the only one to literally draw blood.
Yeah i have lots of troble with that minigame
I'm not entirely against losing coins in minigames, I just with there was an option to turn that off and on.
Glad you enjoyed!

Mario Party is a series definitely worth investing time in, especially if you have friends!
Thanks for all the kind words!
For Mushroom mixup, I think you can cheese it with a ground pound once it gets going real fast. The midair twirl actually lasts longer than the platforms stay underwater.
Ground pounds make me nervous because of how much time you spend on the ground afterwards.
A favorite strategy is to squish someone with a ground-pound when everyone's on the center mushroom and the other mushrooms are coming back up, because the direction of the bounce-back won't matter when all the mushrooms are there to catch you, and your squishing might stall that player from reaching the next mushroom in time...?

i always argue that Mario Party is full of strategy and so many people have tried convincing me it’s all luck. your series is so validating thank you.
Mushroom Mix Up gets insane if you and one other can survive, because it eventually gets so fast that you don't even need to be on the correct color, just make sure you are in the air while the mushrooms are down.
I should've mentioned that, cool info.
Having your coins taken away from you if you lose at certain mini-games is something I wish they'd bring back in later releases. It REALLY adds to the tension when you know you have something to lose instead of just something to win

i know most of the tips, if not all, in this video by just playing the game for years, but for some reason just listening to you talk about every detail is just cool and relaxing, maybe it's just the way you explain everything
And reading all the corrections in the comments has also been enlightening for me!
I can empathize with that. Glad you feel that way!
LOL
58:21 Worth mentioning: If you have the bulb and all 3 teammates are possessed, either make a beeline for the socket if it is visible or let a player take the bulb from you and then IMMEDIATELY punch that same player.

There's tons of other strategies for other boards I'll get to, so we'll see about that!
You... kinda got your wish? At least one of the boards is being remade.
I mean most of the boards here are pretty underwhelming. It very much has first game syndrome for most of these boards(with Wario's Battle Canyon and Peach's Birthday Cake both being pretty crap for different reasons, the former is one of the worst Mario Party boards period lol.)
The board designs are generally very basic here though and not having any items to work with hurts them quite a bit and hinders a lot of strategic play in favor of RNG being the main decider.

It really was the perfect way to close it off, I hope the last minigame for the other titles are just as fitting!

Absolutely excellent breakdown! ...of almost absolutely everything. I can think of only two things you forgot to mention:
Star Spaces - Deactivated Star Spaces turn into Chance Time spaces. I do not know if they remain that way forever or only until all the Star Spaces are cycled through.
Piranha's Pursuit - You can jump onto the vines to swing from them. I am unaware if this is faster.
Can't wait to see you do my main man Mario Party 2!
I'm more upset that I didn't mention that Star Spaces tidbit. It's not a detail I was ignorant of, I've played plenty of Mario Party games and have used that piece of knowledge to my advantage. I think I convinced myself at some point of the video making process that I had mentioned it despite not doing so, which sucks ;~;
Not mentioning the vines on Piranha's Pursuit doesn't bug me as much since the solo player can easily win without them, still would've been nice to have that detail in there thoooooooough.

You've captivated me with your descriptions and detail, and made me feel like playing a game I've never even considered playing before. Thank you for this amazing content.
No problem, I was happy to work on it and I'm happy that you enjoyed!
I gave up the video since I only played Mario Party 4 onward
Then I watched the Introduction video
And then I subscribed and will watch every last one
Glad you enjoyed!
Very awesome video! Looks like so much work went into this and it shows, I loved it! (found the video via NBC) Good work and earned my subscription!
Thanks!! I really need to let him know how appreciative I am, where did he share this video if I may ask?
@@zoomzike I promoted it in both my discord and on my community tab for the channel. I hope this video picks up traction!
...I've never even played Mario Party, why am I listening to this lol
Still, simply explained and useful video :)
I find it funny that someone could listen to someone talk about a game like this having never played it. I'm almost flattered that you listened! Thanks!
@@zoomzike hey man. I'm doing the same, while modeling a soap shoe for my new character. Never played Mario party, u make gud content
It's funny how in hindsight you sounded so reserved in this video. Amazing to watch you grow as a creator over time.
Hey, weird question but where did you find that incredibly accurate Mario font you used throughout the video?
Hehe... Yo mama.
minifridge lmao
Vietnam
Little did we know that he copy pasted it all from other sources and modified it with photoshop to fit properly.
Such dedication.
