I can't remember which Dune book I read this factoid in, but the younger Baron Harkonnen was quite the Adonis with a finely chiseled body. Sexually, he was into boys and was ordered to impregnate Gaius Helen Mohiam for the Bene Gesserit breeding program. He wanted nothing to do with women and assaulted her out of spite. When he entered her, she made her body synthesize a pathogen that made his body go haywire and grow uncontrollably fat. They've hated each other ever since, if I remember correctly.
This is in Brian's prelude books. The trilogy is the House books, Harkonnen, Ateides and Corrino, I can't remember which exact one she does that in but your description is spot on. I get the feel after listening to Nerd Cookies for some time, that she like many other die hards, don't acknowledge Brian's work as she often leaves these points out of her videos. I liked his stuff for context, fills in gaps. They are not literary masterpieces, but I wasn't reading them to tickle a fancy.
@@wonderduff I find myself fascinated with the Dune universe and I know I can't write any of it, so I take it where I can get it. As much as peeps like to complain about the Herbert/Anderson books, how many of us are experienced enough to do better?

You're right the bearded does look like Frank Herbert. You might think some his genes past through the Centuries dispite Benett Gesserit breading program
My memory of the Brian Herbert book was that Harkonnen were honorable but didn’t want to destroy earth with its billions of slaves or some other story where the Attriedes made them out to be cowards.(20+ year old memory of those book!) That should mean the Family is desperate today but would not yet have the Barons characteristics.
You remember that a bit wrong. The Battle of Corrin was the last stand of humanity, no other opportunity like that would be possible and it was either save billions upon billions of humans, spread between League planets or unaligned planets, or stop the assault because of 2 million slaves that were condemned either way. This wasn't even a trolley problem, the slaves were done for either way, it was a matter of showcasing who had the guts to make the impossible decision... Vorian shouldered the burden and made the call, Abulard refused to go thru and if it had stay with that it would have been ok (he would have been demoted and that would have been it, probably), but he evaded confinement and disabled all of the leagues weapons, making it way more bloody than the "mere" 2 millions slaves, way bloodier than it had any right to be and even almost condemning the whole humanity with it. Lets not forget that Abulards own brother condemned him for his treachery, wasn't just Vorian. Vorian was the one that saved Abulards from the fate the League had decided for him, the League wanted him executed, Vorian got him exhiled instead (but never forgave Abulards treason). Abulard became bitter because of that, saw it as a betrayal from Vorian and instilled that hatred into his two kids until the day he died, and so it went, generation after generation. Abulard was honorable, and his treason stem from a decent place, but that treason almost cost all humanity and he never accepted accountability for it. Ironically, his granfather (whom he took the Harkonnen name from after being exhiled) was also called a betrayer but unlike Abulard he did the right thing, and the only reason Xavier's name wasn't cleared was because of Abulard (double irony).
I always love backstory, and prequel’s. But they have to be done well and actually contribute to the overall narrative. I’m looking forward to see how all this plays out.
2:39 I'm surprised that elements such as Yevgeny Harkonnen are directly plucked from the Dune Encyclopedia (even if the spelling's slightly tweaked), considering that Brian and the Herbert Estate never consider it as canon and the book itself never sees a modern re-issue up to this day.
Yevgeny Harkonnen, Count of Hirtius from the Dune Encyclopedia!!! I'd love it if they incorporated more elements from the DE into the series. Although it probably won't be the same Yevgeny, as that one lived in the IV-V centuries AG.
It's a bit difficult for that to happen... the Frank Herbert Estate declared DE as non-canon in a letter credited to Brian Herbert (Frank Herbert's son), Kevin J. Anderson (Brian Herbert's pen pal on the Dune prequel and sequel novels to Frank Herbert's Dune novels) and even Willis E. McNelly himself (the author of the Dune Encyclopedia).
I like this direction and the Harkonnen Characters are awesome. Many People ( Including Nerd Cookies) seem to dismiss the expanded universe, this will be another extension to this Universe. All to good entertainment.
Abulard Buttler's (later adopted his grandfathers Harkonnen name, becoming Abulard Harkonnen) treachery wasn't merely "supposedely", he did indeed refuse to follow orders and did indeed disable the league's weapons which made the Battle of Corrin more bloody than it should have been. His treachery might have stem from good intentions (to prevent the death of two million slaves), but it end up costing way more than that. The slaves were condemned either way, but his actions made the battle way more bloody than it should have been if he had just follow orders, or the very least did not disable the league's weapons. The Battle of Corrin was an impossible choice: either condemn the whole humanity (billions upon billions upon billions), or 2 million slaves who were under the rule of the thinking machines on the planet. Vorian Atreides took the burden of making the though decision, and Abulard almost was the downfall of humanity. Which is tragic, he was a honorable man, and he reverred his grandfather (who was also accused of treachery)... ironically his grandfather did the right thing and probably would have done what Abulard himself refused to do, and the only reason why Xavier Harkonnen (Abulard's grandfather) name was never cleared was because of his treason at the Battle of Corrin.
I think Valya harkonnen is gonna be the main antagonist in this. She and her twin brother Griffin (deseaced) were the only ones with beef with the atreidies at this point in the books. With the presumed death of Vorian in Salusa Secundus, i think she'll turn her attention to uplifting her house to the seat of power in Geidi prime as well as trying to crush the remeining members of house Atreidies in the newly formed landsraad.

If I'm not mistaken, from the books, the Baron is so large because the Reverend Mother Gaius gave him an illness during his act of basically raping her when the Bene Gessert wanted a child from him..we know that child was Jessica
maybe it was in one of the comics, but i thought the reason the baron is so obese and stuck in a hover suit is because he was infected by some virus from the bene geserit. he was a muscular man previously, with a powerful build, but the virus stopped him in some fashion. this was written only a couple of years ago and may not be canon i guess
Evgeny is a transliteration from Russian, where the initial e is pronounced “ye” and not “e”. The English equivalent of the name is Eugene, “well-born” (from classical Greek roots).
the yevgeny name popped up on the news cycle a little while back--search yevgeny prigozhin, the assassinated leader of the russian wagner group--if you want to hear the pronunciation. lol. i'm curious to what's canon for the universe outside of the original series. the encyclopedia was supposed to be until shortly before herbert's death when he turned on it as the fan fiction it is. i would take the son's words based on the outlines and notes if he had better writing style. what do you know, think of this?
"Yevgeny" is the Slavic spelling of "Eugene," with all that implies. Throughout F. Herbert's books, the Harkonnen often have Slavic first names. Duh, like "Baron Vladimir." But the surname is Germanic in nature. So, it's like if the two "scariest" nations for a Westerner Herbert's age IRL got together.

@@NerdCookies you may not, but the Frank Herbert Estate does, and that's all that matters as they control the narrative of anything done with their ip.
Just to be clear, there are lots of things *Nerd Cookies* _"doesn't consider canon"_ but unfortunately for them it is considered canon by the Frank Herbert Estate and so it is canon for the licensed works such as the movies and, specially (since it takes place outside of the written world of Frank Herbert and lands on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Frank Herbert got the name Harkonnen from a phone book. He thought it sounded harsh and Soviet, a good villain name. At the time, he didn't know it was Finnish. Later, he said he modeled the Harkonnens after the German National Socialist Party, but he never explained why he gave them Slavic and Eastern European names.
save you a trip to a world map or encyclopedia or simple internet search, finland sandwiched between scandinavia and the slavs, giving them a shared history and culture. i used to think frank herbert put a lot of meaningful thought into mixing human history into dune lore. turns out he was just a huge stan of sand dunes, the history of the decline and fall of the roman empire (whatever it's f-king called) and lawrence of arabia.
Were not the Bene Gesserit, in particular Gaius Mohiam, responsible for some affliction, that made the once lean, wellbuild baron a fat man? And still no Vorian Atreides???
Yeah that's according to Brian Herbert. IMO that particular "expansion" to the lore contradicts what Frank Herbert wrote about the Baron so I don't consider it canon.
10k years and at no point, does either side make any effort to put the slights and feuds of what would be, the long distant past behind them. Feuds like this might be somewhat?? easier to sustain if you share a direct border with the other party, it becomes more absurd when the party in question is orbiting a distant star 100s of LY away and neither sides actions could possibly have any impact on the other. The origin of this 'feud' is not sound iow. The idea that these two came to loggerheads as both houses harbored ambitions to take the place of House Corrino, is plausible. The idea one side couldn't let an event 10k years in the past go, is not. Even for a society that is rather static and whose elites can live a couple centuries.
No. What made Vladimir so fat and ill was the fact that when he was forced to bear a child with Gaius Helen Mohiem, he couldn't get it up without being sexually violent and forcefully R' ing her after Piter paralyzed her. Moheim released a pathogen from her Bene Gessurit weapon of a body that would slowly destroy the Baron by rotting hem away. It's incurable and took the Barons beautiful, well muscled and near perfect body...his vanity was attacked viciously.
